Here’s my contribution to the Dead Rockstars show: “Joe Strummer, London 1975″

I’m collaborating with UK Photographer, Julian Yewdall, who is a noted chronicler of the Clash and was a former bandmate of Joe Strummer. Julian and Joe played together in the 101ers, Strummer’s band before he joined the Clash.

Our piece is a never before released photo entitled “Joe Strummer, London, 1975.” It shows Joe Strummer smoking a hash joint in a London bar. I met Julian Yewdall in London in 2008 and he invited me to his flat, and showed me this photo.
We discussed a sort of liquid light show color treatment at the time, a merging of London punk with San Francisco psychedelia.

Having met Bill Ham, San Francisco’s pioneering liquid light show master from the beginning of San Francisco’s psychedelic movement, I had seen the gear he uses to produce his shows and learned something of his techniques. I used film slides and oil and ink to create the liquid light show patterns that work through the print. Julian Yewdall’s reaction to the color treatment I gave the photo, “I like the way you have added to the already existing water marks and dust that I left on the original print, and the addition of colour brings a whole new dimension.”

What better way to celebrate Wu-Tang’s 20 year anniversary than with the release of Wu-Sciples, a ten color print celebrating one of the rawest groups in music. This print has been a long time in the making for us at Two Rabbits. When we had the idea we knew only one person could illustrate it right, Adam Hathorn aka Honkey Kong. We were already major fans of Adams work. He has illustrated jobs for us, been a great host when we were in San Diego and he is one of the best tattoo artist we know. Adam is also Wu obsessed, like us. With that said here is Adam in his own words…

“So far as my memory takes me, my introduction to Wu Tang was when 36 chambers was released in 93. I had to wikipedia that, my memory is not that good. My friend Strobe Beats played me “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta Fuck Wit” on a walk man, or some shit, in the cafeteria. The beat made me wanna punch people, much like the hard core and punk rock music that I was listening to at the time. I immediately got a copy, and it was on constant rotation. That was what got me back into hip hop music. Previously I was listening to alot of Public Enemy and alot of the native tongue stuff, Tribe Called Quest, LONS, De La etc. After that hip hop was getting boring. I was young and turned to hard core music, especially in Boston where it thrived at that time. When Wu came with that raw sound with production that was stripped down and unpolished, it was an easy step back in. Wu Tang has been a huge part of music in my life since. I’m sure there’s been few days since that have passed without me hearing Wu in some form. I tattoo all day, or draw all day, so there’s some form of music always playing, and there’s plenty on shuffle.

I was lucky enough to be asked by the guys at Two Rabbits Studios to create the “Wu-sciples” print. Their idea was solid out ofthe gate. Wu Tang last supper with Big Baby Jesus front and center. I said sign me up. The illustration took a bit to do since they’re artist deep, but nonetheless a fun project. Thanks for choosing me to do this print, see you Saturday for the show….. Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces a spectacular set of prints for the Planet of the Apes films. In May 2011, the Alamo Drafthouse hosted “Day of the Apes,” an epic 8-hour marathon of all five Planet of the Apes films on 35mm where puny humans paid respect to their future ape masters. The poster set, created to commemorate the event, is finally unveiled to the public with each film tackled by a different artist.

The posters, created in partnership with Sideshow Collectibles and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, will be sold as a set on Thursday, January 26th for $230. This will also include a bonus print “Alamo Drafthouse Wants You To Go Ape!” which is a variation of the famous Twentieth Century Fox poster created for the 1973 re-release of all five films in theaters.

Jeff Soto The Black Keys France Tour Posters on sale today

I'll leave the details of how he created to him:

The Black Keys are a great band that I've enjoyed for a number of years now. I was asked to do a poster for the French leg of their tour. Having experienced not only Paris, but smaller and friendlier Lyon last year, I wanted to give the people of France another taste of my work, and hopefully a nice poster to commemorate the show.

The inspiration was sculptural works I got to see in France, in particular those celebrating the French Revolution. I designed the poster loosely as a representation of Marie Antoinette's head. I wanted it to be beautiful and sculptural, and maybe just a bit tragic. I don't know where the Black Key's music fits in, but to me, it works well. There is something tragic in their music, there's passion and angst and sexiness, and I tried to put all that in.

The lettering was inspired by the fonts used in the Paris Metro. I couldn't believe them the first time I saw them. It reminded me of 60's era hippy letters, but older looking. I think my friends in Paris take it for granted that they're surrounded by this beautiful old design work. I live on the west coast, so we never see any signs that old!

This is a five color 18" x 24" screenprint on Cream Speckletone paper.

If you are an artist on Tumblr you need to read this

A while back I was talking with an artist and they mentioned that they had deleted their Tumblr account. The artist also wanted to keep their identity anonymous as well so that's why no names will be used. I asked why and they mentioned they were very uncomfortable with the way their images could be used.

The following is the email I received from them after asking details as to why.

This is what tumblr replied when I wrote asking them to remove a painting of mine from a hardcore porno site where someone had reblogged it.
I blocked the person, but that didn't remove the image.
Apparently, there is no "opt out" if that happens and you don't like who reblogs you.:

Also, I have gotten spam links on my tumblr.

It seems out of control...that is, you have no real control over your own images. On flickr and other such sites, you can "opt out" of certain uses by others.
I was able to contact the porno blog person personally to remove my image, but not all blogs on tumblr are you able to contact the person and you may not be able to have an image removed.

Part of the problem with all this is Tumblr Is Launching Its Own Journalism Operation. It's not clear what exactly these Tumblr journalists are working toward, or how much they're getting paid, if they're getting paid at all.

If you read that section in red above it would seem Tumblr thinks they have the right to do whatever they want with your work after you post it on Tumblr. That to me is not right. You artists work too hard on your art for someone to come along and do whatever they want with it. This seems like a very slippery slope and I'm just afraid more artists getting screwed over some how.

If anyone has anything to add to this by all means let me know and I will post it. Thanks again to the artist that sent me the info for this.

Here's a postcript.

I saw that my tumblr blog address with my name on it was not deleted, although I deleted my blog a couple weeks ago.
There is still a blank page with my name at the top. I saw on my stats for my website someone using it and coming to my regular website a couple days ago. Shortly thereafter, I got an artist SCAM email from the same location in the world.
I wrote to tumblr asking them to fully delete the address, explaining what happened, and here is what they wrote back:

"Your old blog was indeed deleted. But when you delete your blog, you free up the URL for anyone else to use. Someone else has now claimed the URL, which they are able to do.
Google and other search engines cache content from Tumblr and other web sites, so a cached version of a Tumblr blog or Tumblr post may remain on the search engine even after it has been removed from Tumblr. You would have to contact the search engine directly to have content removed from its cache. Tumblr has no control over search engine caches."

Someone is now posting on the artist old url and has the artists name on the page. If you want details and the page send me an email I will let you know

It’s the Thomas Negovan poster.
Beside being the owner of Century Guild gallery in Chicago, Thomas is a singer/composer and he’s recorded his new album “By Popular Demand” on WAX CYLINDER (bypassing all manners of modern electrical and digital technologies.)
And it’s great considering the period we’re leaving.
It’s fantastic to use old ways of doing things, it’s a way of touching our past, to create a link with what we’re now, what we have and the way we’re getting “computerized” and “empty”…

So, we worked on 4 different versions of the print.
The first idea was to use a glowing in the dark layer on all of them, but, while printing, we started in having a lot of doubts.
I know, phosphorescent is cool, but it’s also white and it popped out from papers in a terrible way.
So, while working on green, red and blue metallic paper with a perlescent ink, we decided that we wanted to do a version with glowing in the dark color, but it had to be on white paper.
But normal white paper is not so cool.
So we used the same incredible paper we used for the NEVE print (do You remember it?), a metallic iridescent one.
And the result is great.
Anyway, this is what we did.
First of all a regular version on green paper, 3 colors (silver, red and perlescent), run of 147 pieces.

Finally we have “Demoni”.
3 colors printed on white iridescent paper.
This is the only version glowing in the dark, revealing 3 skeleton demons coming out of an eye and an inscription saying: “The angels brought you progress, burned your flesh, watched your murder and called it art “

Tara McPherson Dogfish Head Brewery Art Work

It's been a rock 'n' roll relationship from the get-go.

In 2005, Dogfish Head began working on the world's strongest fruit beer. Fort clocked in at a bold 18% ABV, but thanks to a ton of raspberries, it had a sweet side, too, and Dogfish founder Sam Calagione wanted a label that told the whole story.

He found the answer on a poster for one of his favorite bands.

"The first thing I saw of Tara McPherson's was a gig poster for The Melvins," says Sam. "It was awesome, and I immediately tracked her down and asked her to do our Fort label."

Tara, dubbed the "crown princess of poster art" by Elle magazine, was game. She played with Fort's balance between strength and sweetness.

"I tried to imply the simple fact that it's a really strong raspberry beer," Tara says. "Having her blowing the raspberries was cute and whimsical. And with the lettering and the background image -- she's standing in front of a fort -- you had that play of strong and sweet, like the beer."

The New York pop surrealist then did the label for Chateau Jiahu, and now -- following in the footsteps of Marq Spusta and Dave Plunkert -- Tara's been tapped to do Dogfish's seasonal posters for 2012.

"I just think her artwork looks yummy," says Sam. "It's bright and playful and adventurous and totally unique -- all ideals we aspire to at Dogfish."

For the seasonals, Tara has painted four portraits in her signature style, one each for Aprihop, Festina Peche, Punkin Ale and Chicory Stout.

"I wanted to do something elegant and refined," she says. "I painted them, instead of doing them as poster art. That definitely changed the amount of detail I could put into them."

Tara, who got her break as an intern on Matt Groening's "Futurama," has explored people and their odd ways since art school in California.

These days, with a new Brooklyn art boutique, a full travel schedule and a long list of clients -- DC Comics, Warner Bros., Nike, Death Cab for Cutie and Spin among them -- Tara needs to be choosy about the projects she takes on.

"If it's something I'm not interested in, I have no problem saying no," she says. "In the case with Sam, I love working with him and Dogfish. He always has really great ideas and wonderful suggestions, and the projects are fun."

Posters and postcards of Tara's portraits will be released as each beer hits shelves and taps. They'll be available at the Dogfish Head brewery in Milton, Del., at their brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, Del., and on their website.

What Is SOPA?

If you hadn't heard of SOPA before, you probably have by now: Some of the internet's most influential sites—Reddit and Wikipedia among them—are going dark to protest the much-maligned anti-piracy bill. But other than being a very bad thing, what is SOPA? And what will it mean for you if it passes?

SOPA is an anti-piracy bill working its way through Congress...

House Judiciary Committee Chair and Texas Republican Lamar Smith, along with 12 co-sponsors, introduced the Stop Online Piracy Act on October 26th of last year. Debate on H.R. 3261, as it's formally known, has consisted of one hearing on November 16th and a "mark-up period" on December 15th, which was designed to make the bill more agreeable to both parties. Its counterpart in the Senate is the Protect IP Act (S. 968). Also known by it's cuter-but-still-deadly name: PIPA. There will likely be a vote on PIPA next Wednesday; SOPA discussions had been placed on hold but will resume in February of this year.

...that would grant content creators extraordinary power over the internet...

The beating heart of SOPA is the ability of intellectual property owners (read: movie studios and record labels) to effectively pull the plug on foreign sites against whom they have a copyright claim. If Warner Bros., for example, says that a site in Italy is torrenting a copy of The Dark Knight, the studio could demand that Google remove that site from its search results, that PayPal no longer accept payments to or from that site, that ad services pull all ads and finances from it, and—most dangerously—that the site's ISP prevent people from even going there.

...which would go almost comedically unchecked...

Perhaps the most galling thing about SOPA is that it lets IP owners take these actions without a single court appearance or judicial sign-off. All it takes is a single letter claiming a "good faith belief" that its target site has infringed on its content. Once Google or PayPal or whoever receives the quarantine notice, they have five days to either abide or to challenge the claim in court.

The language in SOPA implies that it's aimed squarely at foreign offenders; that's why it focuses on cutting off sources of funding and traffic (generally US-based) rather than directly attacking a targeted site (which is outside of US legal jurisdiction) directly. But that's just part of it.

...to the point of potentially creating an "Internet Blacklist"...

Here's the other thing: Payment processors or content providers like Visa or YouTube don't even need a letter shut off a site's resources. The bill's "vigilante" provision gives broad immunity to any provider who proactively shutters sites it considers to be infringers. Which means the MPAA just needs to publicize one list of infringing sites to get those sites blacklisted from the internet.

Potential for abuse is rampant. As Public Knowledge points out, Google could easily take it upon itself to delist every viral video site on the internet with a "good faith belief" that they're hosting copyrighted material. Leaving YouTube as the only major video portal. Comcast (an ISP) owns NBC (a content provider). Think they might have an interest in shuttering some rival domains? Under SOPA, they can do it without even asking for permission.

...while exacting a huge cost from nearly every site you use daily...

SOPA also includes an "anti-circumvention" clause, which holds that telling people how to work around SOPA is nearly as bad as violating its main provisions. In other words: if your status update links to The Pirate Bay, Facebook would be legally obligated to remove it. Ditto tweets, YouTube videos, Tumblr or WordPress posts, or sites indexed by Google. And if Google, Twitter, Wordpress, Facebook, etc. let it stand? They face a government "enjoinment." They could and would be shut down.

The resources it would take to self-police are monumental for established companies, and unattainable for start-ups. SOPA would censor every online social outlet you have, and prevent new ones from emerging.

...and potentially disappearing your entire digital life...

The party line on SOPA is that it only affects seedy off-shore torrent sites. That's false. As the big legal brains at Bricoleur point out, the potential collateral damage is huge. And it's you. Because while Facebook and Twitter have the financial wherewithal to stave off anti-circumvention shut down notices, the smaller sites you use to store your photos, your videos, and your thoughts may not. If the government decides any part of that site infringes on copyright and proves it in court? Poof. Your digital life is gone, and you can't get it back.

...while still managing to be both unnecessary and ineffective...

What's saddest about SOPA is that it's pointless on two fronts. In the US, the MPAA, and RIAA already have the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to request that infringing material be taken down. We've all seen enough "video removed" messages to know that it works just fine.

As for the foreign operators, you might as well be throwing darts at a tse-tse fly. The poster child of overseas torrenting, Pirate Bay, has made it perfectly clear that they're not frightened in the least. And why should they be? Its proprietors have successfully evaded any technological attempt to shut them down so far. Its advertising partners aren't US-based, so they can't be choked out. But more important than Pirate Bay itself is the idea of Pirate Bay, and the hundreds or thousands of sites like it, as populous and resilient as mushrooms in a marsh. Forget the question of should SOPA succeed. It's incredibly unlikely that it could. At least at its stated goals.

...but stands a shockingly good chance of passing...

SOPA is, objectively, an unfeasible trainwreck of a bill, one that willfully misunderstands the nature of the internet and portends huge financial and cultural losses. The White House has come out strongly against it. As have hundreds of venture capitalists and dozens of the men and women who helped build the internet in the first place. In spite of all this, it remains popular in the House of Representatives.

That mark-up period on December 15th, the one that was supposed to transform the bill into something more manageable? Useless. Twenty sanity-fueled amendments were flat-out rejected. And while the bill's most controversial provision—mandatory DNS filtering—was thankfully taken off the table recently, in practice internet providers would almost certainly still use DNS as a tool to shut an accused site down.

...unless we do something about it.

The momentum behind the anti-SOPA movement has been slow to build, but we're finally at a saturation point. Wikipedia, BoingBoing, WordPress, TwitPic: they'll all be dark on January 18th. An anti-SOPA rally has been planned for tomorrow afternoon in New York. The list of companies supporting SOPA is long but shrinking, thanks in no small part to the emails and phone calls they've received in the last few months.

So keep calling. Keep emailing. Most of all, keep making it known that the internet was built on the same principles of freedom that this country was. It should be afforded to the same rights.

“In November of 2011, artist, prankster and “popaganda” pioneer, Ron English, approached us with the idea of collaborating on a music video based on his character, Cathy Cowgirl. We humbly accepted the challenge.

We based the visuals on the song, “Cathy Cowgirl” by Ron’s music collective, The Electric Illuminati. The 411 on Meggs:
Initially recognised for his multi-layer street stencils and posters, Meggs has become a well respected member of Australia's street art culture. With a background of graffiti, skateboarding, heavy metal and graphic design Meggs has developed his painting skills from street to galleries with a mixture of aerosol based character work and stencil based expressive canvases. 29 Things That All Young Designers Need to Know

The transition from design student to design professional can be a slippery slope. To help, Doug Bartow of design studio id29 put together this chart of “29 Things Young Designers Need to Know (And Aren’t Always Taught in Design School)”, which originally ran in the January 2011 edition of HOW Magazine. (It’s also available in poster form for $25.00 over on Felt & Wire.)

Says Bartow:

“Many of the questions and concerns young designers share today are the same we had as graduating students looking to make our mark in the professional world—with only a resumé and portfolio of student projects to try and get our collective feet in the door. We’ve all been there and done that. There’s nothing different in the design industry today that makes getting—and nailing—that initial interview or client pitch any easier than it has been in the past.

Throughout the years I’ve collected these questions and have tried answering many of them as an ongoing personal project. Here are 29 of these thoughts on how to approach and interact with our culture as a young designer, in no particular order.”

Each square was paired with an explanatory paragraph or two, which is pasted after the jump, offering some great advice that’s beneficial for aspiring and professional designers alike.

1. SWEAT THE DETAILS
You are a professional communicator; act like one. Carefully edit everything you publish: résumés, social media, e-mail, blog posts, letters, text messages, everything. Get a copy of “The Chicago Manual of Style” and keep it handy. Most potential employers and clients don’t appreciate text shorthand, so don’t use it. They won’t be ROTFL, and you will end up SOL.

2. PLAY NICE
People you work with and for will make your blood boil from time to time. Whenever possible, be a pro and take the high road. Avoid burning bridges, as people change jobs more often than they did a generation ago. Your paths may cross again in a much different situation, and having a good working history together will make rehiring you easy. Apply this to your online persona as well. Anonymous jabs are petty—be better than that.

3. DON’T FEAR TYPE; BECOME ITS MASTER
Often, being a good typographer means not making the simple mistakes. To accomplish this, you’ll need a working knowledge of classical typography. Go get one. “The Elements of Typographic Style” by Robert Bringhurst, “Thinking With Type” by Ellen Lupton and “Grid Systems in Graphic Design” by Josef Müller-Brockmann are cover-to-cover must-reads. Repeat after me: “Free fonts from the internet are crap, I will not use them.” Keep saying that.

4. DEFINE YOUR AUDIENCE

Who are you speaking to and what is the objective? If you can’t definitively answer both of these questions about a project you’re about to start working on, go back to the drawing board. Graphic design is simply a plan that visually articulates a message. Make sure you have the message and its intended viewer sorted out before you start making. Communicate with purpose—don’t just make eye candy.

5. BE YOURSELF
Be confident in yourself as an author, designer, photographer, creative. Don’t work in a particular personal style. Rather, develop a personal approach to your creative work.

Your commissioned work should never be about you, but it can certainly reveal your hand as the designer. As your work becomes more well-known, you will get hired for exactly that. For your personal work, don’t be afraid to tell your story. No one else is going to do it for you.

6. LEARN TO SAY ‘NO’
Some of your best design business decisions will ultimately be saying “no” to clients or projects. Unfortunately, it usually takes a few disasters to gain the experience to know when to walk away from an impending train wreck.

Carefully measure the upsides of any project—creative control of your design work, long-term relationship-building and gross billing—versus the potential downsides—the devaluation of the creative process, being treated like a “vendor” and ongoing scope creep (where the volume of what you’re expected to deliver keeps expanding, while the schedule and budget don’t).

7. COLLECT AND SHARE EVERYTHING
Find and save relevant and interesting things and pass them along to your friends, co-workers, followers and clients. Use the web and social media to share your own photos and work, as well as the work of others you find engaging. Be funny, serious, irreverent, businesslike, self-promotional, curatorial, whatever—just be yourself. For everyday inspiration, surround your workplace with the design ephemera you collect (see No. 5).

8. BE A DESIGN AUTHOR
Develop ideas. Write them down, edit them, share them and elicit a response. Poof! You’re a design author. Read design blogs and participate in the discussions. Have an opinion. If you find yourself spending hours a week contributing to other designers’ blogs, consider starting your own. The cost and effort for startup are minimal, and the opportunities are diverse.

9. BUILD YOUR BOOK
One piece of advice I give young designers looking to fill out their portfolios is to find the best local arts organization with the worst visual brand identity or website and make a trade. They get some great design work, and you get creative control and real-world projects in your book that other potential clients will recognize.

10. CLEAN UP YOUR ACT
Manage your online profiles carefully and be sure to keep all your listings accurate, consistent and (mostly) professional. You can count on co-workers, potential employers and clients to Google you, so make sure what they find won’t be too incriminating and sink your chances for that new job or project. Employers read social media posts, too—especially ones that include their proper names—so use common sense.

11. RESEARCH (AND DESTROY)
You’ll never know as much about your clients’ businesses as they do, but part of our job as designers is to try. Learn as much as you possibly can at the inception of a project about your client’s business space, their goals, their competition and their history. Dedicate a half- or full-day download session, ask a lot of questions, and then shut up and listen.

12. OBSERVE TRENDS (THEN AVOID THEM)

Keep current on the state of our industry by reading books, magazines and blogs, and attending conferences. RSS feeds will allow you to quickly skim design- and culture-related content. Avoid design annuals as a source of inspiration, as they’re a record of what’s already been done. Study the work of others to understand it, not to duplicate it.

13. DEFEND YOURSELF

One of the biggest benefits of a formal design education is the lessons learned in the crit room defending your work in front of your instructor and peers. If you can articulate your ideas and design process in that hostile environment, learning to do the same in client meetings usually comes easy (see No. 21).

14. THE PAPER MATTERS

Contrary to what you might read on the blogosphere, print is not dead. The beauty and tactility of a well-printed piece on quality paper cannot be appreciated or replicated on a screen, tablet or mobile device. Paper manufacturers, merchants and printers are doing a terrific job helping designers make sustainable paper choices to minimize the impact on our environment. Become well-versed with the Forest Stewardship Council certification program, and use this knowledge to choose your papers wisely. Clients are demanding it (see No. 28).

15. CONTENT IS STILL KING
Technically, Elvis is still the king, but for the sake of this argument, let’s put an emphasis on the message, and consider design as a plan for delivering it. The most effective and memorable visual communication almost always has the right mix of form and content, regardless of medium. Good design can engage a viewer, but interesting content will keep them reading, and thinking, past the headline.

16. REJECT PERSONAL STYLE
Picasso had his Blue and Rose Periods, Georgia O’Keeffe obsessed over flowers and animal bones. The difference between them and you? They were artists solving their own personal communication problems. We are designers, primarily tasked with solving the communication problems of others. Using one singular style or direction for multiple clients or projects will rarely be successful and, in retrospect, will look one-dimensional (see No. 11).

17. SAY NO TO SPEC WORK
Speculative work, or spec work, is a request by a potential client for uncompensated creative and design work at the inception of a project. Avoid this like the plague—it’s a devaluation of the entire design process and marginalizes our efforts as a whole. AIGA.org has great resources for dealing with spec work, including a sample letter that you can personalize and send to clients explaining why their request is unappreciated (see No. 19).

18. BECOME INDISPENSABLE
What are you really good at? Contrast that to the skill sets that could help you advance at the workplace. Could your studio benefit from having an in-house photographer, web programmer, video editor or screen printer? Follow your bliss and get the additional training you need to expand your talents and, ultimately, your role at work. Now, does the studio come to a grinding halt when you’re home sick for a day? Congrats. You’re indispensable.

19. JOIN AIGA
Founded in 1914 in New York City, AIGA is the professional association for design, representing more than 21,000 professionals, educators and students with 65 local chapters (find a chapter near you) and 200+ student groups. AIGA supports our efforts at the chapter and national levels through the exchange of design ideas and information, research, innovative programming and as a source of inspiration. If you’re missing that sense of design community you had in school now that you’re in the professional world, AIGA will help reconnect you for life.

20. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS
Build personal relationships with everyone you work with, not just your clients. Get to know your delivery people, paper merchants, printer reps, local politicians and business leaders. Attend Chamber of Commerce events, network and meet people. Get on people’s radar screens—they will be impressed with your well-designed business cards that prominently feature your website address.

21. SEEK CRITICISM, ACCEPT PRAISE
As a designer, listening to your ideas being questioned and your hard work being ripped apart isn’t usually very pleasant. However painful, though, constructive criticism of your design work is the most effective way to grow as a visual communicator. Remember this when you leave the crit rooms of design school for the boardrooms of the corporate world. Build a network of friends, co-workers and mentors you can use to collect feedback on your work. Online sites (heavy with anonymous commentary) are not an acceptable substitute for this discourse.

22. NEVER COMPROMISE

Once you’ve built strong relationships with everyone you work with (see No. 20), strategically use them to get what you want. Convince your clients to use the offset printers or web developers you know that value design and will actively work with you on the final quality of your project. We work too hard as designers to accept compromise at any stage of a job, especially when it can usually be avoided with proactive planning. Timelines that detail every step of a project and outline responsibilities for everyone involved are required to accomplish this.

23. KNOW YOUR HISTORY
Learn as much as you possibly can about the history of graphic design—its movements, terminology and important figures. Understanding design’s cultural past will help you design in the present and future. Study typefaces and their designers, and share with your clients the significance and history of the particular typefaces you’ve chosen for their projects. In addition to being a go-to design resource, this knowledge will help position you as a trusted adviser moving forward.

24. VALUE YOUR WORK
A common mistake designers make early in their careers is undervaluing their work in the marketplace. The best design jobs aren’t always awarded to the low bidder—even a client with the smallest budget often values work experience and compatibility over price. Set an hourly rate for your services, and take a close look at the number of hours a job will take to accomplish, including revisions. Your estimate is simply your rate multiplied by the hours. Make sure you have a firm understanding of the entire scope of work you’re providing an estimate for. Trade? Sure, but don’t make a habit of it—this is your livelihood, not a hobby.

25. MAKE MISTAKES
Take a measured break from your comfort zone and experiment with an approach you’ve never tried before. Force yourself to take chances with form: Use a different technique or medium with text and image to create work you’re unfamiliar and uncomfortable with. Save and display your best piece as a reminder to think differently.

26. KEEP A SKETCHBOOK
You don’t need to be prolific at drawing to benefit from keeping a small book in your bag or back pocket. Ideas tend to arrive at the strangest times, and being able to record them on the spot will help you remember them later. When you fill a book, date, number and shelve it. Soon your bookcase will be a library of your best thoughts and ideas.

27. REMEMBER THAT YOUR MAC IS A TOOL
Twenty years ago, many people in our industry were sure that desktop publishing would mark the end of professional graphic design as we knew it. They confused the convenience of new technology with the skill and passion required to design with it. Take a good look at your design methodology and the role technology plays in your work. Can you select “Shut Down” and still be an effective visual communicator? Practice that.

28. RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT
Make the everyday effort to create a positive environmental impact by integrating sustainable alternatives in your work. Start small by identifying the things you can do in your studio to save energy and resources, and build from there. Present a digital slideshow rather than traditional color output spray-mounted to mat board. Get creative with your consumables by investing in reusable kitchenware and cloth towels in place of disposable plastic and paper products. Consider adopting the Designer’s Accord—a global collection of designers, educators and businesspeople working together to impact the environment through positive social change.

29. TEACH OTHERS
Regardless of your experience, get involved with mentoring younger designers—or students who may be interested in design as a potential career path. It doesn’t require developing a curriculum to get involved. Find a local AIGA chapter, design program or arts center and volunteer some of your time. Participate in local student portfolio reviews, and share your knowledge and expertise with aspiring designers. You’ll find the experience rewarding for everyone involved.
