Is this Banksy? Has the elusive graffiti artist been caught on camera in Santa Monica ?

3 comments:

His film Exit Through The Gift Shop was nominated for best documentary at the Oscars.

But while those hoping to see Banksy at last night's ceremony would have been left disappointed, drivers in California today caught a glimpse of a man believed to be the reclusive graffiti artist.

Exactly who the man is remains a secret - but the evidence suggests that these photos taken in Santa Monica are of him.

Elusive: Banksy didn't show up at the Oscars last night but a man thought to be the graffiti artist was spotted in Santa Monica today

Wearing a pulled-down green cap, a brown T-shirt and grey Adidas tracksuit bottoms, 'Banksy' scrambled to the top of the old container at the side of a busy highway, on which he had sprayed, 'This Looks A Bit Like An Elephant'.

Banksy is known to go back to photograph his art, as revealed in his book Wall And Piece - and the man here was carrying a camera.

Caught on camera: Wearing a baseball cap pulled down low on his face, the figure was spotted on the side of a road attending to his artwork

Banksy is thought to be the man behind this piece of modern art which compares an old container to an elephant.

The British artist has been prolific in the last few weeks, with artwork attributed to him springing up all over LA.

So what do you think is this Banksy ?

Lemurian Goddess Art Print by Dave Hunter on sale details

No comments:

Dave Hunter is proud at last to present the Lemurian Goddess print, an 11 color silkscreen art print. This project is the culmination of what amounted to a challenge. The image is a composite collage from many sources and is highly representative of beings sometimes encountered on the astral plane. The original was created as a gray scale con-tone, without any color concepts until the structure was finished.

The colors were then painstakingly melded from the different tonal values of the gray scale image using Gammalyte Aesthetic Technology™ and layering techniques developed by Dave over the last few years. He then went to film and printed over a 3 1/2 day marathon session at Hangar18. Most of the inks were custom created specifically for this project, including metallics and pearlescents.

Originally the edition structure was to be 50-60 printed on Strathmore Natural White, with a handful of artist variants on a series of different substrates. Sadly, the Strathmore prints encountered curing problems and were a loss when the ink started peeling off. This was due to a series of un-forseen circumstances, including freezing temperatures and changing print schedules. Luckily, the variant paper cured nicely and Dave is glad to offer 13 different variants…

On Sale Date is Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 9AM Pacific Standard Time. Go to Gammalyte.com to purchase them and see all the variants.

Steve Miller Band, live on Austin City Limits Poster by Chuck Sperry

No comments:

Steve Miller Band
Austin City Limits
Season 37 – KLRU – The Moody Theater
Saturday, February 26, 2011
Edition of 100
8 colors on archival cream paper
22″ x 33″
Signed and Numbered

Poster will be made available by Austin City Limits at the live taping for Steve Miller Band on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at The Moody Theater.

Mark Pedini gave CHuck the opportunity to make a poster for rock legend Steve Miller Band for his live appearance on the television program “Austin City Limits” on Saturday, February 26, 2011. What immediately comes to mind for Steve Miller is Stanley Mouse’s Pegasus logo, so with Stanley Mouse “the man who drew the face on rock music” inspiring Chuck, he looked for another archetypical big rock image to chrome-up Steve Miller Band with, and landed on the scarab. The scarab rolls Ra the sun across the sky each day and transforms bodies and souls, meanwhile, Steve Miller rises every day like the sun from a 1,000,000 radios. Chuck colored the Ra symbol with psychedelic EyeFry blue and magenta, and overprinted with two separate coats of very translucent interference blue which catches the light ever so delicately and refracts in prismatic rainbow sparks, ever so gently slanted toward blue.

Malleus Swans Los Angeles Poster

1 comment:

Malleus is now done with the Swans poster in LA.
They've worked out a 3 color print, inspired by the idea of a woman changing her body into a tree (a theme they've already worked several times in the past) and by the Wiener Secession covers of the Ver Sacrum magazine.
The print is limited to 150 pieces and it's totally handprinted 3 color silkscreen on hand stained paper.
They used a sprayer filled with gold ink to make this process.

On sale first at Secret Serpents and then in the Malleus Store

Jon Smith's KE$HA Poster details

No comments:

Jon Smith talks about his latest poster for the party Queen KE$HA:

Wake up Internet, I think I got something to say to you.

As a designer of posters, one of the most common questions I get is “How does it work? Do you talk to the bands or do they talk to you or what?”.

The answer is a little bit of both. When you’re just starting out you have to blindly ask anyone you can think of, and build off of the generous souls who allow you to design anything for them. Be it a band, a club or a label, whatever. Then if you’re lucky, once you get to a point where people have seen your work then you’ll get asked back by previous clients or bands and venues will contact you out of the blue.

It’s like anything else really. If you have any degree of talent and are willing to put in the work, you’ll be fine.

So in the case of this Ke$ha poster, I was asked by the Showbox if I could get a poster done in ten days in time for the show. Not a lot of time considering I have a day job and other projects on my plate and I had no idea if it would fit into the schedule at D&L*. Not to mention I’m not that familiar with Ke$ha’s music, didn’t seem like a great fit. I declined.

In an effort to grease the wheels of production they offered to pay for the art and the printing. It was apparent they really needed this thing to happen and I was happy to help them out now that I was going to make a couple bucks off of the job rather than potentially losing a couple hundred which…happens when you have to foot the bill for printing and don’t sell enough of the posters on your own.

Okay so now I’m in but I still don’t have a lot of time and not a great frame of reference. Luckily Christina from Perfect Laughter was more than helpful throwing in various aesthetic references via twitter. I really wanted to use as many as possible, especially Rodman but I could really only work in one of them BUT the big thing is it helped me get in the proper head space designwise. Big ups to Perfect Laughter or as I say in my head “Perfy Ha Ha”.

The point of all this is, it’s not just about doing posters for your favorite bands. It’s still design work most of the time and I personally like the challenge of creating something for a client(or subject matter) that I don’t know much about at the outset because it’s fun starting from scratch. And in situations like this I’m really trying to please the client rather than myself, which is healthier than building a mountain of weirdness that only I can understand ;)

As far as I’m concerned, this is how poster making should happen. You get asked, you get payed, you do the work(don’t over think it), please the client. I heard Ke$ha loved the poster and grabbed a ton for herself. Everybody wins!

*See kids, you not only have deadlines to get your design done but screen printing takes time and if you’re not doing it yourself you have to give you’re printer time to squeeze it into the schedule.

Nakatomi will have this on sale in a few days along with moire new items from Jon.

ABOUT THE IMAGE:
About this piece, Tom says:

"I painted this picture during the summer of 2010. Oil was still gushing into the Gulf of Mexico and our national political discourse was overwhelmed by the inconsistent and often incoherent rhetoric of the Tea Party movement. From my studio, our national situation seemed horrifically absurd, and so I endeavored to make a painting that might capture how things looked to me at the time. Perhaps the image is a little heavy handed, maybe a bit unfair to Sarah Palin, but I do not think of this picture as an activist image. It is undeniably satirical, but I don't think of it as merely a caricature. I guess I made the picture because, like many others, I find the ex-governor from Alaska to be a very poignant figure in the American cultural lexicon whose importance shouldn't be underestimated. I wanted to see if I could make a comically ridiculous painting that was also beautiful; a portrait that is at the same time both garish and soothing."

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Tom Sanford is a New York-based artist whose work is exhibited around the world. His paintings, which range from historical works depicting celebrity assassinations to portraits of gangsta rappers and teen pop tarts to elaborate cosmologies weaved together from Hollywood movies, reflect a deep ambivalence about the American cultural condition.
