Drew Merritt The Octopus Art Print Release

PangeaSeed Foundation is pleased to announce the latest print release in their 2020 print project, "In Peril: A Visual Story of Our Ocean's Greatest Challenges". Featuring original artwork by supporting ARTivist Drew Merritt (USA), this limited art print edition highlights the importance of ocean stewardship and the conservation of vulnerable marine species such as the iconic octopus.

Artist: Drew Merritt (USA)
Title - "The Octopus"
Print dimensions: 20x20 inches
Edition of 20 hand-embellished with 24K gold and hand-deckled edges | signed/numbered by the artist at $225 USD
Edition of 30 with hand-deckled edges and signed/numbered by the artist at $150 USD

Artist Statement:
"Coming from a farm and ranch background in the desert of New Mexico, I quickly learned to value water. I had the privilege to see the Ocean for the first time when I was about 23, and since then my appreciation of natural resources significantly increased. Being a respectful steward to the Earth and understanding that its beauty relies on our upkeep and stewardship is critical.

When I migrated to LA and found myself closer to the oceans, I also found myself realizing how much a populated area can affect the ocean’s delicate ecosystem. Being an artist has allowed me to travel the world and see the bodies of water that cover it. It’s heartbreaking to see how some of our oceans aren’t treated with the same care as others. PangeaSeed Foundation has done an amazing job of connecting and educating thousands of people by joining facts about our ocean’s needs with artistic expression to spread awareness.

The issue of maintaining the oceans is important to me, so I was thrilled to team up and share my print of “The Octopus.” Octopuses are highly intelligent animals, known for their ability to adapt in their environment. Many have been known to use resources available to them, such as coconut shells to build little houses for themselves. When needing to take quick cover or blend in, octopuses can camouflage themselves. These two facts alone drive home that these amazing animals have taught themselves how to survive in their ecosystems as they are. Therefore, we need to help protect it. After all, most of these guys have three hearts. The least we could do is use our one.” - Drew Merritt

Collectionzz is proud to partner up with The Who to bring their fans a piece of Join Together @ Home with an amazing screen printed concert poster by Paul Jackson:
"The Who have always been a special band for me as my dad is a huge fan. He used to play it all the time to me and my brother as kids, whether it was in the car or at home. As an avid drummer I got really into Keith Moon and his wild ways. His crazy persona and his crazy drumming was incredibly entertaining to behold. I was always obsessed with the time Keith moon put a bunch of explosives into his drum set and blew up the band at the end of their show - it was live on tv and members of the band had to go to hospital afterwards. I consider this poster image a mash up of the crazy sense of mischief and humor that Keith Moon influenced on me and the memories of blasting The Who at high volume at home with my dad.” - Paul Jackson

Nikki Scioscia PangeaSeed Foundation Plastic Pollution Print Release

PangeaSeed Foundation is pleased to announce the latest print release in their 2020 print project, "In Peril: A Visual Story of Our Ocean's Greatest Challenges". Featuring original artwork by supporting ARTivist Nikki Scioscia (USA), this limited art print edition highlights the negative impacts plastics are having on oceans, marine life, and ourselves. An estimated 8 million tons of plastic enters our oceans every year and there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans.

Artist: Nikki Scioscia (USA)
Title: Issues Facing The Ocean: Plastic Pollution
Dimensions: 16x20 inches with a one-inch white border
Details: fine art giclee on Canson Aquarelle 310gsm archival paper
Edition of 50 plus 5 artist proofs
Pricing: $75 USD

Artist Statement
In collaboration with PangeaSeed Foundation, Issues Facing the Ocean is my first full-color fine art print series. I illustrated threats to oceanic ecosystems- plastic pollution, overfishing, and warming waters- through portraits of contemporary female marine biologists and/or advocates. By representing these women in connection with the environments they love, I intend to portray the spirit of the ocean as challenged, yet resilient- and ultimately as the source of all life. - Nikki Scioscia, Illustrator

The first print in this series, Plastic Pollution, features marine biologist Elena Mpougas. Brought up on the beaches of South Carolina and on the isles of Greece as a first-generation Greek-American, Elena cultivated a deep passion to protect the ocean at a young age. Two marine issues that disturbed but inspired Elena was plastic pollution in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and the dire state of the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. As an undergraduate student at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, Elena conducted some of the first local microplastic experiments on fauna and sediment to determine how plastic pollution was impacting the ecosystem as a whole. From sand to shrimp to zooplankton, her experiments revealed that microplastics and/or microfibers were present. In 2018, her research aided the City of Charleston and the City of James Island in banning single-use plastics.

Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus) are one of the most endangered animals in the world. With a population of 700 individuals, Mediterranean monk seals mostly inhabit the seas of Greece. As a graduate student at Bangor University in Wales, Elena collaborated with MOm and the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal to carry out a behavioral study on the impacts of boat traffic and tourism on a group of resident seals in Greece. Her study was published in the journal Aquatic Mammals in 2019 with the conclusion that boat traffic and human presence did disturb the natural behavior of the monk seals, with environmental policy suggestions to further protect the Mediterranean monk seals. Despite Elena’s contributions to policy change through her research, environmental regeneration happens when we all come together. Educating our communities, donating funds, attending town council meetings, and voting for the environment are all ways that we can protect the oceanic ecosystems we love.

A bit about the print from the artist:
"Universal Shaman is my representation of the creation story. The original concept for this piece was conceived at Burning Man, the neo-pagan festival held each year in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada which exemplifies rebirth and creation. It is not made to represent any particular tribe or culture, but more to illustrate the importance of the role the shaman, medicine people and storytellers play in all human tribes.

My neo-tribal style is heavily influenced by various cultures around the world and those artists who have illustrated the rituals, myths and customs down through the ages. It's my way of paying tribute to those original visionaries that have inspired me and my art." -Jeff Wood

N.C. Winters Fading Away Art Print Release

PangeaSeed Foundation is pleased to announce the latest print release in their 2020 print project, "In Peril: A Visual Story of Our Ocean's Greatest Challenges". Featuring original artwork by supporting ARTivist N.C. Winters (USA), this stunning limited art print edition highlights the beauty, plight, and the importance of one of the most important ecosystems on the planet, coral reefs.

Recent studies have revealed that 50% of the world's coral reefs have already been destroyed due to human impact, and another 40% could be lost over the next 30 years. We must act now if we are to save this irreplaceable marine habitats.

Artist: N.C. Winters (USA)
Title: "Fading Away"
Dimensions: 18x24 inches
Regular edition details: Seven color screenprint, full-bleed, on French Paper Company, Construction Pure White, 100 lb cover

Deluxe edition details: Nine color screenprint, full-bleed, on French Paper Company, Construction Pure White, 100 lb cover with glow in the dark layer, and a transparent gloss glitter flake overlay.

Pricing:
Regular Lush $75 USD
Regular Bleached $100 USD
Deluxe Lush $135 USD
Deluxe Bleached $150 USD

Printed by the good people of VGKids.

Artist Statement:
"The goal behind “Fading Away” was to try and create a visual that brings attention to the urgent plight of coral in the world today. It was challenging to both illustrate the beauty of what we’re rapidly losing due to climate change and pollution, but also underscore the danger of the current situation. Thus, two versions of the print were made. The full “lush” version highlights the overwhelming color and beauty of a natural coral reef, while the “bleached” version emphasizes how much of the coral is looking today, bleached, near dead, and devoid of color. The element of the skull is also more emphasized in this version. It was an intentional reason to include a human skull, to draw the connection to the ocean and ourselves, to highlight the very literal way we can “see” ourselves connected to the ocean. What we will lose from the ocean will be directly felt by us as a human species.

On a technical note, this was one of the most challenging screenprint images I've created to date, with the full color builds and tonal range requiring airtight registration and color accuracy. Many thanks to the printing crew at VGKids for the exceptional job, as well of course, to Tre' Packard, PangeaSeed Foundation Founder and Executive Director, for having me on the project and for his patience in how long the print took to come to fruition." - N.C. Winters

You can help save coral reefs by:

Use reef-friendly sunscreen.
Only consuming sustainably caught sea life.
Reduce your and your family’s carbon footprint.
Eating less meat, try meatless Mondays!
Using less electricity at home.
Saving water.
Using less plastic, and reusing and recycling what you do use.
