Lee Conklin Faces and Santana Lion art print
Lee Conklin, the legendary artist of Santana's first album cover and over 30 Fillmore Posters for Cream, The Who, The Grateful Dead, Traffic, The Yardbirds, Buffalo Springfield, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jeff Beck, Vanilla Fudge, Country Joe, Big Brother and many others, unveiled his new paintings at the D.King Gallery in Berkeley. Conklin's signature style incorporates human faces, fingers, and other body parts organically morphing into other-worldly psychedelic landscapes. In his latest paintings, Conklin updates his 60's style with new full color work in a larger scale.
The show also marked the release of Conklin's highly anticipated and extremely limited large scale silkscreen print "Faces". Those who attended the Denver Art Museum's Psychedelic Experience Poster Exhibition raved about the impossibly intricate linework and stunning psychedelic imagery of the original artwork from Lee's masterpiece Fillmore Poster BG #112. Even the most seasoned poster aficionados were shocked to find a work of such complexity and maturity obscured beneath the lettering of the finished poster. At more than double the size of the original, the serigraph brings the complexity of this piece to light in all its glory. Two colorways, black on white and black on silver, will be released on the evening of the exhibition in signed numbered editions of only 50. A very small number of hand inpainted monoprints will also be available.
The exhibition runs through tonight at D.King Gallery, 2284 Fulton St. Berkeley. The gallery is just 2.5 blocks from the downtown Berkeley BART station and directly across the street from the southwest corner of the UC Campus. For further information contact the gallery directly at (510) 548-1062.
