Tim Doyle Unreal Estate WORLD PREMIER EXCLUSIVE Print

Glow in the Dark Variant

It is with great pleasure that I present to you "Gary Cooper". Tim Doyle's Sopranos inspired print for the “Unreal Estate” Show. As a huge fan of Sopranos I was so happy when Ken let me be the one to show you the print first (no the text on the bottom does not appear on the poster). But I had to ask Tim in shame where the name came from since I could not remember..It's in the first episode- Tony says to Melfi- "Whatever Happened to Gary Cooper" at the end of his first therapy session. Edition of 100 and 10 on wood.

Opening night Thursday February 2nd, 2012 6pm - 10pm
Show on view through Thursday February 23, 2012

Spoke Art Gallery is proud to present the debut solo show by Austin-based serigraph artist Tim Doyle. In “Unreal Estate,” Doyle explores locations found throughout popular culture in a variety of limited-edition hand-printed screen prints and original art.

From Moe’s Tavern to the Bluth Banana Stand, Doyle’s realistic and illustrative reinterpretations of television’s most iconic places is a captivating voyage. In the artists words, “Unreal Estate’ is a collection of locations that many of us know and have been to on a weekly basis at times, but can never actually visit. These places are in our memories transmitted and entrenched there through a cathode-ray tube. Some of us have been going to these places for decades, some of these places were taken from us, way too soon.”

For this new body of work, Doyle has moved away from his usually big bold colors and comic-book line quality to create a more illustrative style, with muted tones and colors that reflect a mood or time of day. He attempts to preserve and honor the non-physical spaces found in this show with the same care and intention given to iconic real world locations. This series is one artist’s intensely personal journey through a world which is universal to us all. Join the artist as pop culture tour guide this February 2nd.

As an added bonus, the artist will be in attendance for the opening and they are happy to announce that the first 100 guests will receive a complimentary limited edition screen print. But it will be something no one has seen, it's cool but I cant say more than that.

About the artist:
Tim Doyle is an illustrator and print-maker working out of Austin, Texas. Growing up in the suburban sprawl of the Dallas area, he turned inward, only finding joy in comic-books, television and video games. He has run a small chain of comic-book stores, designed t-shirts and self-published. Doyle was also the creative director for The Alamo Drafthouse’s Mondo Posters until 2009, when he built his own studio, Nakatomi Print Labs.

Tim Doyle on preparing for the show:

Last June, after the opening reception to the Quentin versus Coen show in San Francisco, the founder of Spoke Art, Ken Harman, invited me to have a solo show at his gallery later that year. I was immediately flattered- and then the fear set in. If it's just me, not only was I looking at months of work in secret- but the success or failure of the Gallery that month was up to my ability to create and be clever.

I initially was going to do a very diverse show with a bunch of unconnected works, essentially throwing the visual parts of my brain up on the wall and hoping people liked what they saw. But after talking to Ken for a while, he seized on a couple of ideas I had and did what a good gallery owner should do- focus his artist. This is the show that came of that.

"Unreal Estate" is a collection of locations that many of us know and have been to on a weekly basis at times, but we can never actually visit. These places are in our memories- transmitted and entrenched there through a cathode-ray tube. Some of us have been going to these places for decades- some of these places were taken from us, way too soon..

In addition to the many prints and variants (GID and wood) Spoke will also be offering original inks for every image (some shown above). Each comes framed and all are priced very reasonably. If you'd like to be placed on the collector's preview shoot Spoke Art an email.

  1. Wow, these are all fantastic. Doyle is one of my favorite artists, wish I could go to that show. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up one or more of these in the future.
