Tonight's Pixies Dallas Poster By TAZ

Heads up Dallas you are getting a good poster for the Pixies concert tonight. Done by none other than Jim Evans aka TAZ.

I asked Jim about the poster:
I’ve done a ton of gig posters, but never did one for PIXIES, which left a big hole in my portfolio. When Chris from TSURT checked in an offered me a chance to do one for the Dallas show, I obviously jumped at it, and PIXIES being so iconic made it a unique challenge. I decided to go the German expressionist route, dark, noir, and informed by constructivism on a tribal tattoo tip. I wanted it to have the feeling of a 30’s sci-fi film poster, so I added the Metropolis-style lettering. The main image is clearly a dystopian scientist who represents the bizarre future to come. The support band Public Access TV gave me the idea to link it all up with a retro TV / electronic vibe.
The size of the poster is 18x24, and it’s a 7-color silkscreen. It is printed on #100 Cougar paper. There will be 75 signed and numbered pieces. It will go on sale very shortly at www.limitedruns.com.

Ideal Power Obey Giant Shepard Fairey Print Release

Details from Shepard Fairey on the upcoming release of his print Ideal Power.
The Ideal Power print was inspired by the need to address gender inequality regarding both wages and basic respect. I believe power should come from the quality and merit of one’s work only rather than being influenced by any other variable including gender. Equality is important on every front, but I chose to focus on discrimination and double-standards toward women because I think the prejudice is so insidious and pervasive that most people only recognize the most inflammatory instances of sexism if they recognize it at all. As a husband and father of two girls, I want to see women treated with equal dignity and respect, with access to the same opportunities and wages as men.
A portion of proceeds from this print will benefit the United Nations Population Fund, who advocates for women and girls, promoting legal and policy reforms and gender-sensitive data collection, and supporting initiatives that improve women’s health and expand their choices in life. – Shepard
Ideal Power. 18 x 24 inches. Screenprint on cream Speckle Tone paper. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 450. $55. Available Tuesday, May 2 at 10AM (PST) on ObeyGiant.com in Store under Prints

Artist statement:
"Reef Keeper" is Lauren's vision of a fictional Protector of the Reef, a goddess meant to symbolize the fierce need to care for our underwater ecosystems.

"I recently visited the Honolulu Museum of Art and was inspired by all these beautiful statues of Vishnu, the Hindu "Protector God," and I loved how fierce his image was, embodying the desire to protect with such intensity. I wanted to design my own "Protector" specifically for the coral reef, so I created a mergirl whose tail is lined with veins of coral and whose four arms carry symbols of recycling and conservation. I wanted the image to express a sense of immediacy and intensity for the issue, given that coral reefs are so direly threatened and at risk of extinction. The characters are an old Chinese adage that says "Burning a city gate kills the fish in the moat," which implies that every action you take has a reaction further down the road.

Coral Reefs are underwater structures forming colonies of tiny living animals (corals) found in marine waters that contain few nutrients. Coral reefs form some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. They occupy less than 0.1% of the world's ocean surface, about half the area of France, yet they provide a home for 25% of all marine species, and they are ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.

These corals are under major threat due to climate change, ocean acidification, blast fishing, cyanide fishing for aquarium fish, harvesting for the aquarium trade, overuse of reef resources, and harmful land-use practices, including urban and agricultural runoff and water pollution. General estimates show approximately 10% of the world's coral reefs are dead. About 60% of the world's reefs are at risk due to destructive, human-related activities. By the 2030s, 90% of reefs are expected to be at risk from both human activities and climate change by 2050, all coral reefs will be in danger."

YOU CAN HELP SAVE CORALS

Donate to an organization working to raise awareness and research such as PangeaSeed, Reef Check, Coral Reef Alliance etc.

Advocate global and regional action to protect of coral and coral reefs.

Support the establishment and protection of marine protected areas (MPAs).

Recommend ecotourism and dive or snorkel on coral reefs - but remember to look and DO NOT touch or stand on corals. This offers sustainable monetary alternatives to destructive fishing methods.

Think twice before you buy. Do not support the illegal trade of coral and try to reduce your carbon footprint.

Educate yourself, friend and family on the issues facing coral and other endangered ocean animals. Act NOW if we wish to save our seas.

Alien NC Winters Poster

N.C. Winters is thrilled to announce his officially licensed “Alien” print now available through Mondo and 20th Century Fox. The guys at Mondo reached out with a dream project for his first officially licensed movie poster. In the words of Mondo:

“H.R. Giger’s iconic design for the Xenomorph is just about perfect. It’s instantly identifiable, timeless and terrifying. N.C. Winters has paid wonderful tribute to Giger’s brilliant design in his poster for ALIEN. N.C.’s rendering and careful attention to detail across the Xeno design is stunning. This poster will be on sale as an extended timed edition release, available starting now and running through May 19th when ALIEN: COVENANT is released in theaters.”

The poster came together unbelievably well, and is one of the top pieces of work N.C has ever created. He had a strong intent to run with Giger’s original artistic design and tried to stay as true it as possible, and Mondo and Fox were both happy to support this vision. The print is an open timed edition, with the purchase window closing right at the release of ALIEN:COVENANT.

Emek Radiohead Santa Barbara Poster Release

Emek was inspired to create this image from the title of Radiohead's song Pyramid Song and the lyrics of the song 2+2=5; the driving repetitive tempo reminded me of an endless Koyaanisqatsi assembly line...

In a matrix-like world, worshiping false idols in the march towards "progress" is only feeding the instrument of our own destruction. Unknowingly creating the means to our own end, the giant Radiohead consumes all who feed it.

As advanced as we are, we are still primitive in regards to seeing the consequences of our actions in the future.

The eyes are from the HAL 9000 computer (2001) The "teeth" are made from golden pyramids. The perspective of the workers disappearing also creates a pyramid shape, re-iterating the shape of the all seeing eye.

Radiohead "Factory" A special VIP poster from their recent California show

Matt Leunig String Cheese And Yonder Cities Beer Posters

Who doesn't love beer and cheese ? For you Matt Leunig is making your dreams come true with 2 new posters.

To commemorate the release of the new YONDER CITIES cans by DC Brau & Union Craft Brewing Matt created a limited-edition run of “Space Jester” & “Space Captain” art prints (18′ x 24″). Just like the the cans, they are black light responsive and features invertible artwork.

Matt got tasked by the folks at The String Cheese Incident to create a new print for their big 3-day concert at Stubbs in Austin, TX. He's been down to Austin a couple times and have always liked the vibe of that city. Taking a stroll you might find some weird elaborate chalk drawings on the sidewalk or guerilla-style mosaics embedded in the side of a building. Everywhere you look things are very colorful, the people are artistic and of course the music is amazing.

The print is a 6-color screenprint (18′ x 24′) printed by the kickass folks at Good Thoughts (Boulder, CO) with a run of 275 for the band.

Matt will have all the posters on sale starting Tuesday April. 18th 11am PDT at http://scrapedknee.com
