Artist statement:

"Every year, eight million metric tonnes of plastic waste enter our oceans. That's the equivalent of one garbage truck dumping its contents into the ocean every minute. It is now estimated that by 2050 the amount of plastic in the ocean will outweigh the biomass of fish.

The artwork is an imagining of an empty ocean, a plastic sea, depleted by human impact and overconsumption. All that remains are degrading pieces of colorful plastic that envelop the central figure as she submerges into a frightening possible reality.

Plastic pollution is a global problem that affects us all. Plastic is so prevalent, we’re finding it in the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breathe. Plastic pollution has impacted at least 267 species worldwide, including 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species.

Be the change you want to see in the world. Lead by example and vote with your dollar because our consumption choices will determine our fates." - Ilya Kuvshinov
