Meggs The Swallow (Save Our Seas) Print

Meggs has a great new print he just released through 1xRUN in support of the efforts of PangeaSeed. The print is titled The Swallow ( Save Our Seas).

PangeaSeed’s Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans is the first movement of its kind helping to save our seas via public art and activism (ARTivism). The festival will feature 30 world-renowned contemporary artists from across the globe, collaborating to bring vital ocean environmental issues into the spotlight. The festival’s educational workshops will engage local youth to learn more about critical marine environmental issues affecting their home island, and what they can do to help save our seas. Meggs Reclaimed Youth Print Release Details

"Reclaimed Youth was one of the original artworks for my ‘Spoiled Rotten’ solo show in September last year at Inner State Gallery. The show explored ideas of loss, consumerism, decay, and regeneration.

It is part of an ongoing series of pieces that explore duality in the format of a split face or character. Images in the series depict two sides, such as good vs. evil, wealth vs. poverty, hero vs. villain, etc. This piece in particular depicts idealism vs. reality." - Meggs

Meggs Avenge Me & Shaka Prints Release Details

Back in September of 2014, Inner State Gallery and 1xRUN welcomed Australian artist David “MEGGS” Hooke for his solo exhibition Spoiled Rotten. The exhibition of over 40 paintings and multiples explored the wondrous decay of social morality stemming from modern society’s obsession with pop culture and overindulgent materialism, and continued MEGGS’ perpetual fascination with dualism and finding beauty in tragedy.

“Detroit is a city of duality more so than many other cities I have been to. I sought to incorporate this by using objects and surfaces that imply decay, in what I consider to be a beautiful way. Old wooden materials and signs with layers of paint tell a story of their own. Although the colors and textures are aesthetically beautiful, I think it’s about giving these materials a new life, a second purpose.” - Meggs

"This piece was part of my 2014 solo show ‘Spoiled Rotten.’ It’s part of a series of hand painted heroes over sourced old-school style target posters, which is then torn and collaged with a combination of found billposters and hand screen printed retro comic collages. All made during my month long residency with Inner State Gallery in Detroit.

The split between traditional ‘bad guy criminal’ & Captain America reflects the classic comic narrative of Hero vs Villain, however the distressed style & execution of the piece references the fragile nature of moral ideals and social justice in contemporary American society." - Meggs

"This edition is hand painted and sprayed, so essentially every one is unique, an original series so to speak.

This piece is based on a tee design I did for Pow Wow Hawaii in 2013. The Shaka is symbolic of good vibes & Aloha in Hawai’I so it’s a classic and fun image I use as a symbol of my love for Pow Wow and Hawai’i in general. Its obviously also recognized in surf/skate culture so the composition is a reference/homage to the all-time classic Jim Phillips screaming hand graphic for Santa Cruz skateboards." - Meggs

Meggs Rising Up, Back On The Street Print

Melbourne born and bred artist David “Meggs” Hooke shows the world what he’s made of with this massive mural he painted in Detroit. 1xRUN has turned this and the painting into a print titled Rising Up, Back On The Street.

"'Rising Up, Back On The Street' was one of the largest featured paintings for the show. It was created as my homage and direct reference to the city of Detroit. The tiger, namesake of the Detroit Tigers baseball team for over a century, is a symbol that Detroiters relate to and feel proud ownership of. It was born from the city's past glory and survived through it's unfortunate losses. The power of a tiger and its relationship with Detroit now represents a continuing symbol of tenacity & hope for a new era of positive change and re-growth.

As soon as I created the piece I knew that when I painted a mural for the city I wanted to use this image and elaborate on it, focusing more on the Tiger and the words Rise Up, emphasizing the energy and momentum of forward motion and self-empowerment. It was my way of giving back to a city that had welcomed me, inspired me and allowed me to take from it to expand my own work & ideals." - Meggs

Meggs From the Ground Up - Hand-Painted Multiples Release

One of the big hits of Meggs recent solo show at Inner State Gallery (Show Pictures HERE) were these HPM's he created. They are 12 x 12 x 1 Inches Acrylic & Aerosol on Reclaimed Wood and 1xRUN is making them available.

"These hand painted multiples were created using discarded wood panels that I found while scavenging through the remains of Detroit's infamous Eastown Theatre. The theatre opened in 1930 and was converted from a movie theatre to a rock venue in the late 1960s and had some of rock and roll's finest acts from Detroit's MC5, the Stooges and Alice Cooper to national mainstay acts like The Who, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead.

Music is a huge inspiration in my work and this series is a both a homage to Detroit's history, as well as a continuance thought that out of the remains of our past, new ideas and inspiration can grow. Each multiple, featuring the iconic Spoiled Rotten balloon, is a completely unique piece of re-purposed wood with hand-pulled screen printing and paint splatters." - Meggs

Spoiled Rotten Meggs Solo Gallery Show Covered

Friday night saw the opening of Australian artist Meggs first solo show at Inner State Gallery in Detroit, Michigan and the Inside the Rock Poster Street Team was on hand to cover the incredible show and bring you the pictures (Click them to enlarge).

The show of over 40 new paintings and multiples explores the wondrous decay of social morality stemming from modern society’s obsession with pop culture and overindulgent materialism, and continues MEGGS’ perpetual fascination with dualism and finding beauty in tragedy. The city of Detroit plays a major influence in MEGGS’ philosophy behind Spoiled Rotten, as he created an entirely new body of work during his five-week residency at Inner State Gallery and 1xRUN.

Among the many highlights of the show I think everyone's favorite was the interactive creation of art. Participates were given a slingshot and some paint balls to shoot at a wall about 10 feet wide and 15 feet high, see the picture above of Meggs standing in front of the wall. If they got 3 bulls-eyes they got a signed show flyer from Meggs. People had a lot of fun with this and through the night it transformed into it's own piece of art created by all those that attended.

Opening to the public Friday, September 19th from 6-10pm, Inner State Gallery is proud to welcome Australian artist David “MEGGS” Hooke for his solo exhibition Spoiled Rotten. The exhibition of over 40 new paintings and multiples explores the wondrous decay of social morality stemming from modern society’s obsession with pop culture and overindulgent materialism, and continues MEGGS’ perpetual fascination with dualism and finding beauty in tragedy.

The city of Detroit plays a major influence in MEGGS’ philosophy behind Spoiled Rotten, as he created an entirely new body of work during his five-week residency at Inner State Gallery and 1xRUN. The exhibition highlights Detroit as an inspirational juxtaposition of a spoiled past and its position as a new canvas for growth and rebirth. MEGGS’ use of deteriorating signage and locally sourced materials from the city’s abandoned and forgotten places emphasizes the revival of social pillars such as community and the idea that destruction and decay breed new beginnings.

The genesis of Spoiled Rotten lies in MEGGS’ painting entitled ‘Life’s Ups and Downs,’ which features a split image of the inflated iconic yellow happy face balloon juxtaposed with its discarded, decaying, and deflated other half.

“This concept started when I saw a deflated happy face balloon, which is an image I’ve been obsessed with lately. The ‘happy’ balloon is a classic icon that depicts playfulness, optimism, and the idea of, “Have a nice day!” Yet, the balloon is also a very disposable item and has a limited life span. It deflates. I think this is something that people can identify with and it ties into that idea of duality in Detroit,” Meggs said.

The exhibition also marks the debut of a new sculptural collaboration between MEGGS and artist Rafael Batista of Brooklyn, New York. Batista, who hand-sculpted each piece, gives new life to MEGGS’ happy face balloon images, taking them from canvas to 3D collectors’ items.

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, MEGGS has proven to be one of the most progressive street and fine artists with countless murals and gallery shows worldwide. MEGGS’ massive large scale murals throughout the globe have made him a must see artist at mural festivals like POW! WOW!, Forest For The Trees, and Sea Walls. Meggs Beauty Is More Than Skin Deep Print

Australian artist Meggs is back with 1xRUN with this print of a recent mural as one of the Pow Wow Hawaii 2014 Featured Artists

This screen print "Beauty Is More Than Skin Deep" coincides with Meggs recent mural of the same name in Downtown Los Angeles.

The mural reflects the same layered image as the screen print, with a glow in the dark stencil layer to reflect the sixth 'gloss skull' layer in the print.

"I wanted to experiment with a few new techniques on this wall and see if by using transparent paint layers I could achieve the same effects that we achieved with the screen printing process. The location of the mural, on 6th & Mateo, is a high traffic area at night so I decided to try using glow-in-the-dark paint to give the final 'skull' layer a really ghostly feel and I love that it is only revealed in the dark of night!" - Meggs
