In August 1969 — against the backdrop of a nation divided over politics, civil rights, and the Vietnam War — half a million people converged on a small dairy farm in upstate New York to hear Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, The Band and other music icons in a concert billed as “3 Days of Peace and Music.”

What followed was beyond anything anyone could have predicted. The cultural phenomenon no one foresaw transformed an ordinary field into a historic landmark where legendary performers played to more than 450,000 people. Unimaginable mud and unforgettable moments transformed Woodstock Music and Art Fair into a cultural rallying cry for an entire generation. It was the defining moment of the counterculture revolution – and it changed their lives and the world forever.

Collectionzz decided to create a poster which not only represented peace and music, but also the grounds upon which it all took place. When Woodstock was being conceived, the original plan was for it to take place in Wallkill, New York. But after locals panicked over the scale of the project, the event was banned. This only brought more attention to the event, which organizers originally assured would only draw 50,000 attendees. Needing a new venue for the event, promoters were introduced to dairy farmer Max Yasgur. His 600-acre farm in Bethel Woods, NY, just about 40 miles southwest of Woodstock, became the site for the historic event. They thought what better way to celebrate Woodstock than with art paying homage to Max Yasgur's dairy farm!

The Doors LA Woman Print by Steve Thomas

 

For the band's sixth album L.A. Woman, The Doors continued the trajectory of Morrison Hotel return to blues. On L.A. Woman, Jim Morrison’s vocals were raw and loose, Ray Manzarek’s varied organ lines were masterful, John Densmore was powerfully tight and Robbie Krieger was sharp and biting. If anyone felt the Doors had lost a step dealing with Morrison’s obscenity bust in Miami and subsequent tour cancellations, this was a strong opening rebuttal. 

The album was fresh and free-flowing, and critics unanimously praised L.A. Woman. Rolling Stone’s Robert Meltzer wrote, “You can kick me in the ass for saying this (I don’t mind), this is the Doors greatest album and including their first, the best album so far this year. A landmark worthy of dancing in the streets.” The album went to number five in the charts and the first single, the Krieger-penned “Love Her Madly”, reached number seven. The album also included L.A. Woman, and arguably the Doors' most well known track Riders On the Storm (which was also the last time the four Doors recorded together). 

Collectionzz's inspiration for the L.A. Woman 50th Anniversary print was from Doors co-founder and keyboardist Ray Manzarek's own description of the classic album:

"[L.A. Woman] represents to me a drive across the great American Southwest. Driving on the freeways and highways through the desert - Arizona or New Mexico - or driving up the coast of California on Highway 1, from L.A. to San Francisco. It's alive, it's free, it's young and it's wild."

The illustration was designed by Steve Thomas, whose style is a mix of vintage poster, travel and product art from the early 20th century. Collectionzz hope it transports you from wherever you may be to Highway 1 on the Californian coast, with the sun shining, the music of the Doors in your ears and the wind on your face blowing your cares away.

Artist Steve Thomas' "HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, CHARLIE BROWN" brings us a touching and elegant rendering that finds Snoopy and Woodstock happily preparing valentines for all as Charlie Brown approaches his beloved "little red-haired girl." Strikingly composed, the 'will she or won't she' moment is pure Schulz in tone and one whose combined hesitance and hopefulness we can all relate to. Artist Mike DuBois' "LOVE FOREVER" is pure joy! An absolute celebration of love itself, its happiness not confined to Valentine's Day but love to bask in and delight always. Mike's detail work is always a visual treat, his tree of love raining hearts a sight to see, but the sheer joy with which Woodstock gathers hearts while in flight as they gently tumble, then cascades those same hearts down upon his closest friend who ecstatically celebrates via his classic happy dance, this is a true celebration of love, life and its multitude of faces. Steve Thomas See America New York Travel Poster

Ford Craftsman Studios is proud to announce the release of their latest limited edition screen printed poster, See America – New York by Steve Thomas.

Regular contributor to their product line, Steve Thomas, designed this piece with the 1930’s in mind. Featured is the Chrysler building, whose construction was completed in 1930 making it the jewel of New York and the tallest building in the world for 11 short months, being overtaken by the Empire State Building.

Passing nearby is the Douglas DC-3, which revolutionized travel in the 1930’s making it possible to see America and beyond.

The print measures 18 inches wide by 24 inches tall. It was screen printed with seven colors including metallic silver, highlighting the stainless steel “crown” that sits atop this Art Deco masterpiece and polished aluminum skin of the DC-3.

Edition size is 100 signed and numbered pieces priced at $40 each. These are available in hand-finished quarter-sawn white oak frames with anti-glare glass and hanging slots in the back for $150. Available Saturday, May 17th.
