Tim Armstrong Avenues & Alleyways Solo Art Show

No comments:

The print PCP is releasing

SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS and Poster Child Prints are proud to present the first ever solo show by musician, songwriter, and artist Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid, The Transplants), featuring never before seen artwork. The raw, hard-edged spontaneity in Armstrong’s art mirrors his approach to music making, exemplifying a “passion is more important than precision” aesthetic that speaks to the creative rebellion dwelling inside us all.

Avenues & Alleyways features drawings, paintings, watercolors, and mixed media works on found materials that have been collaboratively selected by Armstrong and Shepard Fairey. The range in medium, size, and subject matter provide a well-rounded presentation of Armstrong’s honest and unrefined artistic charm. The imagery includes figures in Armstrong’s life, tools of his trade, album covers for deceased musicians, and poetic ruminations scrawled across simple line drawings.

Tim Armstrong’s art has a visceral lyricism and immediacy that screams “if you feel it in your guts…express it with your hands!” The D.I.Y. punk ethos of honesty and emphasis on raw instinct that is so integral to Tim’s music is clearly evident in his tremendous body of gestural and poetic visual art. I was amazed by the quality and diversity within Tim’s “Tim Timebomb” project for which he created a song and piece of art each day for a year. If Tim’s drive and proliferation in multiple mediums don’t inspire you to get off your ass, nothing will! – Shepard Fairey

The first time I heard of Shepard was back in 1991 at my punk house in the East Bay, when I saw his stickers on our wall, and I’ve been a fan ever since. It’s an honor to be working with him and Subliminal on this art show. As long as I can remember, I have drawn or painted pictures. I’m looking forward to sharing it with everyone. – Tim Armstrong

A box set (Edition of 100) containing 45 screen prints by Armstrong, modeled after the 7 inch 45 format, will be released opening night with a limit of one per person / household. All prints in the box set will be signed by Armstrong and numbered. Avenues & Alleyways will be on view through Saturday, February 22.

These hand-pulled silkscreen prints are crafted in Los Angeles using the finest paper and archival inks. Prints are limited and once they sell out they will not be reproduced.

Starting last winter Tim started writing, recording and releasing one song a day with original artwork to accompany each single. Over 135 songs have been recorded to date and can be found on TimTimebomb.com. "Some of the songs are my own originals, some are collaborations I've done with other artists, band-mates, and friends. We play a lot of different styles from Punk, Ska, Reggae, Country, Roots etc."

About Turntable:

"C'mon everybody, let's get together.. is one of my favorite lines from the immortal Eddie Cochran. Here's a tune that comes from Rancid's '98 LP- Life Wont Wait. It's another one that we pulled from the vaults." - Tim

The print size selected for this series plays an important role in the creation of it. 12x12 symbolizes the size of a record cover, something Tim knows a great deal about! Tim has been drawing and painting record covers for years so it seemed fitting that we select this iconic size for the series.

Tim Armstrong on the song that inspired this print :

I bought Sick Of It All’s first seven inch back in the late 1980s, and ever since then I’ve just always loved their unique style.

After listening to their music, and keeping up to date with what they were doing, I wrote some letters to the band, and Rancid ended up playing with them for the first time in 1993 at City Gardens in Trenton, NJ, and we’ve remained friends ever since.

Last month I saw SOIA play in Quebec, and they are as strong as ever. Simply put, they’re just built to last, and they’re still one of my favorite bands.

Here’s our take on one of their classics, “Step Down”.

I was thinking about this song.. you see it has a history. Rancid was kicking this particular one around; we had recorded it as a demo around the time of "Let's Go" and we played it live back then..I hope you're still with me..Fast forward ten years from the release of "Lets Go" up to Lars' Frederiksen And The Bastards 'Viking' album, where it officially appears on wax for the first time.. Add on to that another 10 years, which brings us to Feb 2013, for this version here-- a hyper take played by the Twins and I.- Tim Armstrong

Tim Armstrong Skull & Crossbones Print on sale today at Poster Child Prints

1 comment:

Tim Armstrong is best known for his work in Operation Ivy, Rancid and the Transplants. He is also the founder of Hellcat Records. Tim's artwork has been a private endeavor for decades. Few know that this private sideline has developed into a full body of work expanding many mediums, until now.

Poster Child Prints will be releasing his new print today at 11am PDT. Skull & Crossbones is an 18 x 24 inch 4 color screen print on Coventry Rag paper. With an edition of 150 signed and numbered.

I have been asked not to show the full image ( you can get a good idea from the pics above, it looks cool) until they do when the print goes on sale at 11am PDT at PosterChildPrints.com
