Darren King Cheap Thrills Art Print

No comments:

Darren King of Crooked Head contacted me about a new print he has released titled Cheap Thrills.

I asked him about the design:
The piece is about being overwhelmed by the bombardment of advertising on our lives.

The portrait is based on a pen & ink drawing. Most of my art combines loads of sometimes related, sometimes unrelated imagery & text all mashed together. Been playing around with this design for about the last 12 months or so & finally put it down on paper.
Cheap Thrills is signed & numbered Edition of 15. 8 layers of ink hand printed onto fabriano unica 250gsm white acid free paper measuring 18 x 24 inches.

Cost $60 (au) which equates to around $47 (US) right now.

Buy it at http://store.crookedhead.com.au/ and be sure to check out his other art and clothing.

New Art Prints By Justin Santora

No comments:

The first print, "Strident/Particular", was done for a group exhibition focused on celebrating the medium of screen printing. The artist lineup for this show was excellent, and Justin was stoked to have been included in it. Oddly enough, he found working on this print was a great way to sort of reconnect with the printing process, as corny as that might sound. He always gets excited watching prints come together color by color, but he recalls having just an extra bit of fun as these colors went down.

The print is ten colors, with one split fountain, and the top two transparent teal-colored layers are printed in a gloss finish, which looks pretty slick against the more flat/satin finish of the preceding colors.

And now for something completely different.

"The Weather in Caerbannog" is a six color screen print that was done for a recent exhibition of all things Monty Python. When invited to be in an officially licensed Monty Python show, he couldn't resist doing a big old landscape depicting the notoriously murderous Rabbit of Caerbannog from the Holy Grail film.
I first saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail in high school with my friend Brian, who'd brought a copy on VHS over to my house to watch after we'd finished skateboarding for the day. I recall howling with laughter at this scene, and just thinking about it now is making me grin. - Justin
These and his 2018 print subscription are available now in his store at www.justinsantora.com

David Welker The Maze Art Print Release

No comments:

David Welker has a truly epic release happening this week.
A little over 25 years ago I had the great pleasure of working with the band Phish on their concept album titled "Rift". It was a rare chance to work intimately with these four legendary musicians when they were still getting fan mail in a shoe box. When it was proposed that there would be this main character lying diagonally in a bed I was struck with the literalness of it. So straight away I put myself headlong into it. I was the guy lying diagonally in the bed doing my best impression of Martin Sheen's post Saigon meltdown in Apocalypse Now. And fittingly I was in the midst of a breakup during the whole creative process.

This album spoke to me in so many ways over the years and I just couldn't help but feel there was some strange almost mystical connection going on. I'm sure I'm not alone though. So, now I find myself revisiting this room, this strange house, and wondering what it would look like if the Maze came to life. What would it feel like to still be inside the Maze 25 years later? The woman is in the doorway. Is she staying or is she leaving? It was the story of my life for a while. Perhaps the man finally chooses love and is released from the Maze. At this moment the man in the bed appears like a sort of Rip Van Winkle character rowing a boat diagonally across the sheets which have now turned to a rushing torrent of water. If the morning ever comes the album would seem to suggest that love prevails. So there is a lot of dynamic tension in this piece but all the while there is serenity in the face of the man and calm in the woman. And peace in the distance.

I began this drawing process 11 months ago and I feel like I lived another micro lifetime again as the main character letting the piece tell me what it wanted to become. It's as much the story of my life as it is the continuing story of the song and countless other souls who have journeyed with this band and their amazing legacy.
