David Welker Studios Spring Show Releases

No comments:

David Welker is excited to start 2021 off with a Spring Show featuring a new official print for Phish along with recent drawings, paintings, screenprints, and giclees.

I feel a lot of optimism in this catalog and I hope you feel it too. From December until now I've been pushing thick paint, graphite and ink in various forms of realism, fantasy, and abstraction.

For this show I have some very complex screen print work from three of my favorite print houses, End Hymns in Michigan, The Half & Half in South Carolina and Good Thoughts in Colorado (who affectionately delivers the "Stinkiest Ink" in the business).

I'm grateful for your continued support of my work and by extension to be able to support these great print houses all over the country.

As we move forward from here look for an official piece for Pink Floyd curated by David Gilmore himself. An official piece for the David Bowie Estate. An official piece for The Jerry Garcia Estate. And an official piece for The Grateful Dead, along with new paintings and drawings.-DW

To see all the art being released go HERE to see the Lookbook.

All prints will go on sale on Wednesday March 31 at 1PM EDT in his Welker Studios Store HERE ! For the first time ever, he will have a limited quantity of matching print sets of all 17 pieces in the show! Every tube will also receive a show card.

David Welker The Mill Road Art Print Release

1 comment:
Screenprint

Giclee

Details from David Welker on his new print release:
I've always been fascinated with Rural America, Appalachia, and the ominous beauty of the post industrial "Rust Belt" region. My family had Midwest roots after immigrating mostly from Scotland in the early 19th Century. My Grandmother from a poor coal mining family in Alabama moved North and met a wealthy son of a publishing family just West of Cleveland, Ohio. Our family travels through Western Pennsylvania and Ohio are forever etched in my memories, as are the sensibilities of that rural mindset.

For this latest piece titled "The Mill Road" I worked in cooperation with Coal Camp USA and Rust Belt journalist Chris DellaMea. Originally a part of some research for a concert poster for "The Decemberists" playing in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 2011, at the time I changed gears and chose a more stylized depiction of "Steel Town" for the final poster. So all these years later I decided to rework the old sketch I had started back then. And having lost the original photo, I finished it from memory.

I think there is some extra charm in the piece having waited for so many years and with the subtle interpretations of memory.

Now my good friends at The Half & Half in South Carolina have made a beautiful screen print edition on an Opal Pearlescent paper and we will also have a beautifully hand-deckled giclee edition as well.

David Welker Grandpa Fish & Cuttlefish Art Prints Release

No comments:

David Welker wanted to revisit his underwater series this week with two new screen prints. The Grandpa Fish was a chance to take the Inedible series in an anthropomorphic direction. A young fish is asking advice from a wise old fish who has seen a lot of plankton in his lifetime. This will be a 10 layer screen print with opaque silver highlights.

The Cuttlefish is a 6 layer screen print on a very cool paper stock called Stardream Opal Metallic. David has always loved Cuttlefish and their intelligent eyes. They can hypnotize their prey with bio-luminescence.

David Welker The Mining Colony Art Print Release

No comments:

This Friday David Welker will release his first painting of the year as a print edition. The title is "The Mining Colony". The piece developed slowly from abstraction into a fairly distinct pictorial landscape over the course of about five weeks.

Details and a message from DW:
I like when artwork transports me and I enjoy imagining what sort of minerals or gems the people who built this outpost are searching for, what their mining methods are and how far they are from any other civilization.

The piece itself is the first of a series of painting commissions that I'm taking on as a new direction for my career. I'll have more information very soon about how to register for a commission slot.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this edition. I realize these are trying times, but I must keep working for essential reasons. I am, as always, deeply grateful for your support.

Thank you and stay strong and safe.

The Mining Colony
Archival pigment on cotton rag paper with hand deckled edges 27 x 20 inches
Signed, embossed and hand-numbered edition of 125

David Welker The Great Divide Art Print Release

No comments:

As David Welker turns the corner out of another Winter in the Northeast he has found himself drawing to balance the intensity of the slower process of painting again. One of the pieces that came out during this graphite flurry was a solitary figure standing over a frozen river. The drawing itself is a jumble of scratchy, gestural marks that almost appears abstract from certain angles. It's a symbolic moment of contemplation and crossroads in the wilderness. The land between the great continental watersheds where an explorer of a time long ago would come upon a river that flowed to a different ocean than the one he came from.

Archival pigment on cotton rag paper with hand deckled edges
Size 14 x 12.7 inches
Signed, embossed and hand-numbered edition of 125

The piece is titled "The Great Divide" and it will be available on Wednesday, March 18th @ 1PM ET on his web-store https://welker-studios.myshopify.com/.

No comments:

With the new year comes new work, and this Friday, David Welker will be releasing a print version of his painting, The Country House.

The Country House is a painting that many people have asked him about since its inception and conception last year for Art Basel, and he is happy that a print version was able to capture the multi-layered dimensions and colors of the original. David Welker Wednesday Prints Release aka The MONSTER DROP

No comments:

David Welker is heading into an intense work phase in preparation for a year ending Open House at the new Brooklyn showroom. He hopes to see you there on December 29th. For those of you attending the Sunday night Phish show at Madison Square Garden he'll open the doors at 12 noon so it can be a festive pre-show gathering with Art & Music & Fellowship in mind.

In the meantime, he is releasing several editions this Wednesday to help support the two month immersion to prepare for this show.

David says
"I'm very excited about these colorful multi layered screen prints. I've waited for this time to release them before the Holidays get too close. I get a lot of emails from people who have yet to hit a print drop as well as long time collectors who are having trouble hitting drops. I hope that having some options and some decent sized editions will help first time collectors and veterans to land something they want. I truly appreciate your ongoing support of my work. I'm hoping to develop a "Troubadour" themed landscape series for the December show. I think I'll probably be as surprised as anyone else at the outcome. See you soon!"
All of the prints will be available on Wednesday (10/23) at 12PM EDT on his web-store HERE.

David Welker Coney Island Self-Portrait & More Art Prints Release

No comments:

What's happening with David Welker you wonder, well I'll let him tell you.

"As we say farewell to another Summer the anticipation of a new concert season, a new gallery season and the spectacle of ComicCon all propel us on to a different kind of adventure. Before I reveal my concert posters both slated for post Halloween I’d like to close one long chapter in my recent history. The first piece I created for my Hoerle-Guggenheim retrospective was titled “Coney Island” and the choices made in that piece paved the way for the rest of the show. I wanted to create a pictorial narrative and also break that picture plane at the same time. This piece accomplished both concepts more than any other piece from that show. So I’d like to offer this as a print edition along with my tortured self portrait from that time period which depicts the feeling of preparing for a 30 year retrospective show in a huge gallery space with less than a year to prepare and just about every other challenge life could throw at me. This will formally and officially close the Hoerle-Guggenheim editions. I truly appreciate the love and support I received for this show. Both editions will be released this Wednesday at noon Eastern time in my website store.

Now fast forward one day and we are at another vast ComicCon event with the Bottleneck crew holding center court as usual. Unsurpassed again as the preeminent pop culture gallery in the world. It's always a thrill to see what they bring to this event. And as usual I am the oddest thing that they’ll be showing because once again I’m offering an abstract painting print edition. This time a very colorful piece titled “Mind Excavation”. Hand deckled, signed and numbered and embossed in an intimate edition exclusively for ComicCon.

As we head towards Halloween I’m working on one of the most intense landscape drawings I’ve ever done. I hope to have it ready for an Autumn release. In November I’ll have two ambitious concert posters I’m currently working hard to complete. Early December we jump to sunny Miami for Art Basel.

And as we look forward to another Phish invasion of Madison Square Garden this New Years Eve I am hoping to host an open house event with new work and a special Gamehendge piece I’ve had on my mind for 27 years about a certain Colonel climbing a certain mountain. Let’s see what happens." DW

David Welker Phish Boston Fenway Park Poster Release

No comments:

Phish had David Welker do an exclusive poster for their pop-up shop this past weekend.

According to David:
It was a real thrill to make a poster for the mighty Phish from Vermont playing at the fabled and storied Fenway Park in ye olde Boston City. I lived in Boston for a few formative years in the late 80's and first saw Phish in 1989 at a small club just up the hill and westward from Fenway Park. I felt a sparkling energy coming off the stage way back then in that intimate 500 capacity venue. I knew they were up to something. It was undeniable. They were Wizards. Mad Scientists. I have to say it feels like a dream returning after 30 years and seeing them in Fenway Park and having the honor of making this piece to commemorate the occasion. This one is very special to me, and I really hope you enjoy it. It's a seven layer screen print with three metallic inks. The original pen and ink and hand drawn supplemental layers are possibly the most detailed and balanced work I've ever done for a poster. Thank you to everyone who braved the heat and made the effort to grab one at the pop up shop.

For the release of his personal copies David will do a random lottery on Wednesday, July 17th at 12Noon EDT. There will also be a special additional print dropping alongside the lottery at www.welkerstudios.com

David Welker Ghosts of the Forest Philadelphia Poster Release

No comments:

According to David Welker "I was very excited to do a new piece for Trey Anastasio's latest side project "Ghosts of the Forest" at their Philadelphia show last week. I feel like this imagery has been in my subconscious for a very long time and this was the perfect opportunity to get it out onto paper. I appreciate Trey's heart, vision and dedication. It takes a certain kind of will to do what he does and his complexities and sincerity are always evident in everything he does. I tried to reflect that in this piece. Love, sincerity, mystery, and exploration.
My personal copies are the last one hundred numbers from the show edition of five hundred. For those who attended the show, I'm sorry I didn't have time to have the edition shipped to me for signing prior to the event. My personal copies will be signed and for anyone attending my gallery grand opening on June first in Brooklyn I will happily sign your show copies in person."

The screen print is a concise 19x14" and is a five layer screen print expertly crafted by The Half & Half in South Carolina with a subtle push pull between warm and cool metallic inks. The feel is oddly reminiscent of moonlight in a dreamscape.

For David's gallery grand opening on June 1st, he will have a special full color art print version of this piece titled "From Stars Returning". The opening will be from 2-6pm eastern at 60 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY.

Ghosts of the Forest will be available on his web store page HERE Tuesday, April 9th at 12PM EDT.
