Jimi Hendrix Richey Beckett Monterey Pop Print Release

No comments:

Jimi Hendrix would make his US debut with the Experience at The Monterey International Pop Festival on June 18, 1967, and he set the standard for what it meant to look -- and sound -- like a rock star. Donning a ruffled shirt, velour vest and bright red pants, with a scarf around his forehead, Hendrix commanded attention as he stepped on stage with the Fender Stratocaster that he would later douse in lighter fluid and set ablaze in one most iconic performances (and imaged) in rock history.

Coming on after 40 minutes of the groovy sounds of the Grateful Dead, the Jimi Hendrix Experience had maximum impact as they blasted into their high-octane take on Howlin’ Wolf’s Killing Floor followed by Foxy Lady, the latter introduced with a self-assured: “Dig this.”

Their first big American gig might have been belated, but as a band they were more than ready after honing their set on the European psychedelic scene. The threesome meshed superbly on what is acknowledged as one of the best festival sound systems ever.

Ultimately, the Monterey Pop Festival belonged to Hendrix. He arrived as a relative unknown in the States and left the personification of inclusivity and adventure during the Summer of Love. His guitar-burning showmanship became as iconic as the man himself, and it was the perfect subject matter for an official print. Richey Beckett took a very unique approach in creating this amazing art by using many layers of colored ink washes, appearing as wild and free as Jimi's playing:

"My idea for this piece was to imagine someone who had been in the front row at Monterey describing to me the energy and the feeling of what they witnessed, how they remember it. Like recalling a dream. Hendrix as this otherworldly being—explosive, ethereal, on fire." - Richey Beckett

The Doors Morrison Hotel Print by Richey Beckett Release

No comments:

Collectionzz is thrilled to finally present their first limited edition print for The Doors, commemorating the album Morrison Hotel on its 50th Anniversary designed by Richey Beckett !

This album was dangerously close to not being made. In late 1969, it appeared that The Doors were destined for a breakup. At the behest of their record label to "work out their demons" by recording a new album, the band re-entered the studio with their long time producer Paul Rothchild. The result was The Doors' iconic fifth album, released in February 1970. Morrison Hotel received critical and commercial success with radio hits such as Roadhouse Blues and Peace Frog.

Creem magazine called the album "the most horrifying rock and roll I have ever heard. When they're good, they're simply unbeatable. I know this is the best record I've listened to ... so far", while Rock Magazine called it "without any doubt their ballsiest (and best) album to date." Circus praised it as "possibly the best album yet from the Doors" and "good, hard, evil rock ... and one of the best albums released this decade"

Collectionzz enlisted Richey Beckett to create a print that authentically captures The Doors in late 1969:

"Illustrating The Doors 50th Anniversary of Morrison Hotel poster was a huge honour. Henry Diltz’s iconic portrait of the band, shot from across the street as they struck a pose in the lobby window, has become one of the most beloved record covers of all time for one of the band’s most celebrated LPs. My intention in the illustration was to bring the viewer closer, right up to the window, face to face with Morrison, Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore as mysterious shapes and patterns emerge from their backlit figures—a glimpse into the legendary Hotel and the mystical narrative created around it." - Richey Beckett

Richey Beckett Crisis AlexisOnFire Print

No comments:

Richey Beckett has dropped his first screen print of 2017 - 'CRISIS'.

The artwork was created to officially celebrate the tenth anniversary of AlexisOnFire’s acclaimed album ’CRISIS’. Thematically the record is inspired by the events of the Great Lakes Blizzard that struck the band's homeland of Southern Ontario in 1977.

The original album art featured a series of black and white photographs depicting various scenes from the aftermath of the blizzard - cars buried beneath heavy snowfall, a man with severely frostbitten hands. For the tenth anniversary art Richey wanted to show the effects that the blizzard had on wildlife - as species were driven out of their habitats and challenged to find food. Although several species of swan live on Lake Erie, it’s extremely rare to find a black one.

The term ‘Black Swan’ is used to describe an event or occurrence that deviates beyond what is normally expected (deriving from the historic Western belief that all swans are white). It describes something that is unpredictable and causes great effect. This felt like the perfect metaphor for the Great Lakes Blizzard, which only came about due to a specific combination of extreme weather conditions. The black, white and red coloration played perfectly with the existing palette of the ‘Crisis’ record art.

A limited edition artist set of 75, beautifully silk screen printed on 12"x24" 100lb Speckletone Madero Beach French Paper.

Richey Beckett Zardoz Movie Poster Release From Mondo

No comments:

On Thursday Mondo excited to release a stunning new poster for Zardoz by Richey Beckett. Myself, I'm just happy to see Sean Connery on a poster.

Here's what Richey had to say about the film and his idea behind the poster:
"ZARDOZ is a fantastic movie and I was thrilled to be invited to create this poster for it. I feel that over the years people's fascination with the outlandish outfits and tripped out dialogue has distracted from what really is a brilliantly ambitious sci-fi saga jam-packed with iconic imagery and at the heart of it, a compelling and solid story.

After immersing myself in it I found such a wealth of aesthetically delicious visuals that it became impossible to fit everything I wanted into this poster. I could've created an entire series exploring the visual feast of Boorman's alternate universe. So after seemingly endless pruning I was left with the core elements that made up the final illustration, and took the liberty of showing a metaphoric destruction of the iconic stone godhead as my own twist on the tale. My aim was to create a poster that celebrates the ambition, spectacle and dare I say beauty of ZARDOZ, hopefully doing justice to the movie's true spirit and creating a hero of the man who dared to challenge his god (in knee-high hooker boots)."
The poster is 24"x36" screen print. Hand numbered. Edition of 225.
