Justin Santora Spots & Growth Print Sets

No comments:

Justin Santora has a couple of 3 print sets he has released and they are pretty cool.

Justin describes the Spots set of prints:
This is something I have wanted to release for a while. I know I risk looking self indulgent with niche subject matter like this, but I've never really shied about from my skateboarding and punk rock roots. I suppose something like this was inevitable. If you follow me on instagram, you may recall a few mini prints I posted late last spring.
This is the first installment in what I hope will be a series of print sets depicting various skate spots and/or objects. Each of these prints are 7x7", five color screenprints on Cougar white coverweight paper. Each print is signed and all three come packed in a screenprinted, hand-numbered portfolio cover and resealable clear bag.
Growth is a new print set which consists of three one-color screenprints: two are 6x9", and one is 9x12".

From Justin:
I’ve always kind of struggled with big life changes. I think a lot of people do. It seems like nearly everyone i know is going through some kind of massive shift in life lately. I spent the last eight years running my little operation out a building in Chicago, five of which were with my dear friends, Dan and Jes from Landland.

The smaller two prints are obviously related to skateboarding, a cornerstone of my youth and an admitted current form of therapy. The concrete ledge print is based on one of the most famous skate spots in all of San Francisco, The Hubba Hideout. These ledges were all over the pages of nearly every skate magazine in the 90’s, truly a permanent fixture in the history of skateboarding. It is now long gone.

The other smaller print is a combination of two Inktober drawings, and i suppose it could be considered the titular piece in the set. “With one hand time moves us forward; with the other it holds us back.”
Both are on sale now at  http://justinsantora.storenvy.com/

Childish Gambino & American Football Prints By Justin Santora

No comments:

Justin Santora has released 3 new prints. First up, he had the honor to have been asked to do a poster for Childish Gambino's recent sold out show at Madison Square Garden.  Justin approached this poster a little more like a painting than a line drawing. These are six color screenprints, and the variant version has two metallic colors.

Six color screenprint on Cougar natural cover
24x18", signed/numbered A/P edition of 40 (regular) and 18 (variant)

He also has a poster for 2 of American Footballs West Coast tour dates and new art print.

New Art Prints By Justin Santora

No comments:

The first print, "Strident/Particular", was done for a group exhibition focused on celebrating the medium of screen printing. The artist lineup for this show was excellent, and Justin was stoked to have been included in it. Oddly enough, he found working on this print was a great way to sort of reconnect with the printing process, as corny as that might sound. He always gets excited watching prints come together color by color, but he recalls having just an extra bit of fun as these colors went down.

The print is ten colors, with one split fountain, and the top two transparent teal-colored layers are printed in a gloss finish, which looks pretty slick against the more flat/satin finish of the preceding colors.

And now for something completely different.

"The Weather in Caerbannog" is a six color screen print that was done for a recent exhibition of all things Monty Python. When invited to be in an officially licensed Monty Python show, he couldn't resist doing a big old landscape depicting the notoriously murderous Rabbit of Caerbannog from the Holy Grail film.
I first saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail in high school with my friend Brian, who'd brought a copy on VHS over to my house to watch after we'd finished skateboarding for the day. I recall howling with laughter at this scene, and just thinking about it now is making me grin. - Justin
These and his 2018 print subscription are available now in his store at www.justinsantora.com

Phish New York Poster By Justin Santora Release

No comments:

Justin Santora was one of the artists to create a poster for Phish's record breaking Bakers Dozen shows in New York at Madison Square Garden.

Justin talks about the poster:
I threw my back out really bad the week I began working on the final drawing for this poster. I spent a couple of days slowly inking this vulture at a makeshift standing desk that my wife made for me by setting an end table on top of my usual at-home drawing spot. This was definitely a drawing I learned a lot during (and not just the value of standing desks). It turns out donuts are a ton of fun to draw. Who knew?
This poster is a six color screen print, printed on Cougar natural 100 lb cover. It's 18x24", and a (now sold out) edition of 650 was sold at the shows.

An identical A/P edition (also signed and numbered) will be released at www.justinsantora.com this Thursday at 1 PM CDT.

Justin Santora An Inconvenient Sequel Truth to Power Poster Release From Mondo

No comments:

In recognition of former Vice President Al Gore's new film, AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER, Mondo are proud to release a gripping new poster by artist Justin Santora, printed on recycled paper. Proceeds will be donated to Austin Parks Foundation, a non-profit devoted to making Austin a greener place to live, work and play.

“It is exciting to be a part of this project with Mondo and the makers of this very important film,” said artist Justin Santora. “Like many, I hope for a future where humans work together to foster renewable, ecologically responsible energy that ensures a viable planet for people and animals to live on for many years to come. Humankind is just one part of a vast system full of natural beauty and an astonishing array of fragile, miraculous life. I have always felt that it is our duty to take care of the earth while we're here.”

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power by Justin Santora. 18"x24" screen print. Hand numbered. Printed by Justin Santora.

About the Film:
A decade after “An Inconvenient Truth” brought climate change into the heart of popular culture, comes the riveting and rousing follow-up that shows just how close we are to a real energy revolution. Former Vice President Al Gore continues his tireless fight traveling around the world training an army of climate champions and influencing international climate policy. Cameras follow him behind the scenes – in moments both private and public, funny and poignant – as he pursues the inspirational idea that while the stakes have never been higher, the perils of climate change can be overcome with human ingenuity and passion.
The poster is on sale now at mondotees.com, available through Wednesday (8/9) at MIDNIGHT (CT).

New Prints by Justin Santora

No comments:

With these two prints, Justin Santora decided to try a slightly smaller size. The classic 18x24" is one he'll always love, but he wanted to see how these would look at 12x16". A little variation is a good thing, yeah? Both are seven color screen prints, editions of 65, and are signed & numbered.

Take a look below, and if you find yourself visiting his store, please note that he has added a couple of previously thought to be sold out posters, as well as a couple of original ink drawings.

Justin Santora Amos Lee Poster And Art Prints

No comments:

Justin Santora has bunch of new prints for sale. The first is a new art print entitled "Awake!" which is available in two different colorways, one with text and one without. Both are three color screen prints on Cougar natural cover, 14x24", signed and numbered editions of 50.

Also up in the store is an Amos Lee tour poster with the same illustration, as well as a recent poster for Spektral Quartet.

Also up in his store is this a special print from which Justin will be donating $10 from each sale to the ACLU, which is of course doing some especially important work these days. These are 12x18" and printed on cougar natural cover. Open edition, signed/not numbered. These were originally released on January 20th, or the day that reality TV, racist baby boomer fear mongering tabloids, Goldman Sachs, and Exxon Mobil rapidly accelerated their existing pace of destroying any shred of all that is good in the world.

There are also some special vinyl stickers of the same design, which will be included with all orders while supplies last. They're pretty awesome for covering up Infowars stickers. Or maybe your punk-as-heck niece or nephew would like to put it on their guitar case.

Justin Santora Umphrey's McGee Chicago Print

Justin Santora just added (and will be adding) lots of new prints to the store, which includes gig posters for Guster, Lucinda Williams, Umphrey's McGee, and The Wood Brothers. He is really excited about how these turned out.

Chicago band, Umphrey's McGee played three hometown New Year's shows to round out 2016. The band commissioned a different artist to do a poster for each show. Dan Black from Landland did the December 29th poster, Kyle Baker did the December 31st poster, and Justin did the poster for the December 30th date at the Aragon Ballroom.

These are 18x24", 6 color screen prints, printed on 100lb Cougar natural coverweight paper. Signed/numbered A/P edition of 50. 2016. $30 each.

Speaking of making prints in 2017, this year's Justin Santora print subscription is officially open. As always, subscribers will get one of every screen printed item he produces for the calendar year, including all art prints, gig posters, movie posters, print sets, etc. Each subscriber will also receive a one-of-a-kind test print, a small original sketch or two, and a unique print or variant that is only available to subscribers. Justin has some pretty exciting plans for this year, so if you like the things he makes, you might consider coming along for the journey this year!

Justin Santora Posters for Mike Gordon and Greensky Bluegrass

No comments:

Justin Santora has a few more posters up his sleeve and a print before the year closes out. The posters are for Mike Gordon and Greensky Bluegrass. The art print is titled Profane/Inevitable.

Justin was contacted about doing this poster for Mike Gordon's recent string of sold out shows in Cambridge, MA and he came up with this idea of a space themed crash landing just outside of Boston. For added intensity, Justin completed the drawing while his wife and him were packing up their things and moving into a new place.

Justin Santora has new poster for Ray LaMontagne's show in Phoenix that he inked in one marathon sixteen hour drawing session. It's a two color screen print with a subtle split fountain.

Next is his collaboration with INFO•RAMA, an architecture info graphic about Chicago's rich history with regard to building design and construction. Justin Santora Bonsai And Raiders Prints

No comments:

Justin Santora has two new releases. One is a movie poster for Alamo Drafthouse, and  a poster for a special annual bonsai event in Delft, Netherlands.

Raiders! is a five color screen print on Cougar white cover. It measures 24x18" and was originally a signed and numbered edition of 75. Signed and numbered A/P copies are now available.

Bonsai Van Het Westen is a three color screen print on Cougar natural cover. It measures 18x24", and comes from a signed and numbered edition of 100. Also available in the store. $20.

Justin worked with Alamo Drafthouse and Mondo to create a poster for Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made, a documentary about childhood friends who re-shot the original Raiders of the Lost Ark shot for shot.

Justin on the bonsai print:
One of the more interesting things I've done a poster for was a recent bonsai tree show in Delft, Netherlands. This was actually a very challenging drawing for me. I restarted it three or four times. Eventually things started falling into place, though! Thank you for all the comments and inquiries about this print. They are now available in the store.

As far as printing goes, this was another first for me. All three colors were split fountains, which for those who may not know, is that blended color effect. It's one of the first techniques I tackled way back when I was teaching myself how to print, but I've never done a print in which ever color was a split. For a minute there, I'd really forgotten how much I like using split fountains for lighting or atmospheric effects.

Justin Santora Raiders The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made Poster Release

No comments:

On Tuesday Mondo are releasing a poster by Justin Santora for Drafthouse Film's Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made, a documentary about 3 friends' shot-for-shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Via Drafthouse Films:
After Steven Spielberg's classic Raiders of the Lost Ark was released 35 years ago, three 11-year-old boys from Mississippi set out on what would become a 7-year-long labor of love and tribute to their favorite film: a faithful, shot-for-shot adaptation of the action adventure film. They finished every scene...except one; the film's explosive airplane set piece. Over two decades later, the trio reunited with the original cast members from their childhood in order to complete their masterpiece. Featuring interviews with John Rhys Davies, Eli Roth and more, Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made is just that: the story of this long-gestating project’s culmination, chronicling the friends' dedication to their artistic vision—mixed in with some movie magic—to create a personal, epic love letter to a true modern classic.
This poster will be available online at a random time on Tuesday, June 14th. at Mondotees.com

Justin Santora Biscayne Bay Poster And Mystery Tubes

No comments:

Justin Santora has been really busy with several new projects. One of which has included the production and release of his Biscayne Bay poster for the National Poster Retrospecticus' 59 Parks poster series. It's an eight color screen print, made in Chicago. Two different sizes are available at 59parks.net, and Justin has a signed and numbered A/P edition available in my store.

His friends at 59 Parks also conducted an interview with him about this poster, but also about how Justin started out as an illustrator, my process, being kind to animals, and more.

Lastly, he is doing a bit of spring cleaning! So by popular demand, he is making a limited number of SPRING MYSTERY TUBES available. As always, there will be both a regular and deluxe version (6 prints and a sketch) of the package available.

Justin Santora 2016 Print Subscription & New Poster

No comments:

Here is the last thing Justin Santora printed in 2015. Fittingly, it was a poster for a series of New Years shows. Richard Thompson did a three night stand in Evanston, IL. Justin tried a more stylized, graphic sort of approach to this one, specifically with the clouds.

Said Justin:
"It was nice to sort of loosen up and bit and focus on what is essentially a decentralized contour drawing. Weirdly, I tried centering the tightrope walker two different times while I was illustrating and laying this out, but I didn't like now it looked nearly as much as when I placed him off to the left a tiny bit."
The print subscription will cover everything Justin prints for the entire 2016 calendar year, as well as a small original pencil drawing/ink study or two, test prints, etc. In the past, he has also printed record sleeves, post cards, and CD inserts. These are also included, should they happen to be produced this year. In total, his output for a year ranges from 35-40+ individual prints.

Justin's plan for 2016 is to send all prints to date out around the halfway mark, and then send the last half in early 2017. So subscribers will receive two shipments of prints with matching edition numbers, roughly six months apart.

You can find Justin's email on his website www.justinsantora.com and contact him regarding payment and any questions you may have. You can also buy the new poster there as well.

Justin Santora Trey Anastasio Band Poster & More New Work

No comments:

Before heading to Europe for some poster shows Justin Santora kicked out 3 great new pieces of work that you can get now.

For Thelma was an image that his band used then Justin reworked and enlarged it as a 12x12" print, named for his beloved grandmother.

The next one is for the Trey Anastasio Band. Justin had fun trying to imagine what an old satellite at the bottom of a lake might look like. The ink drawing he did for those poster was the first thing he used my new rapidograph pen on.

Shakey Graves is an interesting artist. As always, when initially unfamiliar with a band he is working with, Justin checked out some of their music videos and was really impressed by this guy singing, playing guitar, and working two kick drum pedals to keep a beat going. This poster is for two sold out shows Shakey Graves just had in Chicago.

All of them are on sale now at www.justinsantora.com
