People like David Bowie don't come along very often and have the power to touch our lives in so many ways. He has influenced music, fashion, art, design and countless other parts of our daily lives.
On Friday he released his last album Blackstar, it was his 69th birthday. Consciously I never knew when his birthday was. Late last night when I found out David has passed away and all the talk about his life started I realized something else. 7 years ago on January 8 I started Inside the Rock Poster, it was not a planned event on his birthday but just one of those weird happy coincidences that happen in life and now mean so much more.
I have always been a fan of his music, but my favorite album is Earthling it was a perfect mix of rock and industrial music.
Back in 1995 David toured with Nine Inch Nails on what they called The Outside Tour. What an incredible pairing hell yeah I was going. To this day it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. During the tour, as Nine Inch Nails reached the conclusion of their performance, the two bands played together with both Nine Inch Nails and Bowie and his band performing "Subterraneans", "Hallo Spaceboy" and "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)", followed by two Nine Inch Nails songs "Reptile" and "Hurt" after which Bowie continued with his own set alone. There was no break between the bands, David's band came out and members of NIN quietly left the stage and soon it was just Trent Reznor and Bowie's band, then just Bowie's band and the show never stopped.
Brian Eno has revealed that he received an email from David Bowie recently in which "he was saying goodbye".
In a statement, Eno said: "David's death came as a complete surprise, as did nearly everything else about him. I feel a huge gap now. We knew each other for over 40 years, in a friendship that was always tinged by echoes of [comic characters] Pete and Dud.
"Over the last few years – with him living in New York and me in London – our connection was by email. We signed off with invented names: some of his were 'mr showbiz', 'milton keynes', 'rhoda borrocks' and 'the duke of ear'.
"I received an email from him seven days ago. It was as funny as always, and as surreal, looping through word games and allusions and all the usual stuff we did. It ended with this sentence: 'Thank you for our good times, brian. they will never rot'. And it was signed 'Dawn'. I realise now he was saying goodbye."
Eno also revealed that the pair had considered working together again. "About a year ago we started talking about Outside, the last album we worked on together. We both liked that album a lot and felt that it had fallen through the cracks. We talked about revisiting it, taking it somewhere new. I was looking forward to that."
