American Artifact - Thank you from Merle and the DVD is out today!

Today, March 27th, 2010, marks the worldwide release of the American Artifact Double DVD. It has been true labor of love for myself, (and not an easy journey by any stretch of the imagination!).

Since the film's release last June, we've had an amazing run with packed screenings in just about every major city. Press reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the attention to rock posters (and "lowbrow" art in general) has grown exponentially.

I've truly enjoyed spending time with this subject, traveling with the film, and most importantly, seeing all the artists again and meeting the fans and supporters who have helped to spread the word about the movie from the start. You all totally rock, in every way possible!

Like any parent who sends their kid off to college, today I "send my kid off to college"; a "kid" who has been living with me for the last five years.

As production starts on my next film, this means I'll no longer be traveling with American Artifact as it continues to screen throughout the country and Europe. However, I hope you all will continue on the journey with the movie, and with me on to my next project (which I hope to be able to talk about soon!).

I also encourage you to pick up the DVD if you haven't yet, or tell a friend whom you think might be interested. The DVD has almost two hours of extras and deleted scenes, director's commentary, and is packaged in eco-friendly material. And to boot, your support will help support independents like myself make interesting, "outside-of-the mainstream" cinema in the future.

American Artifact - Portland, Arizona, and Boston premieres added! NJ this weekend!

Just a quick note to let you know that they've added more screenings of American Artifact to the roster: A PORTLAND premiere (this Friday, Jan. 22nd), an ARIZONA premiere (Feb 5th), and a BOSTON premiere (Feb 23rd)!

American Artifact - DVD release date announced!

For all of you who have missed out on an American Artifact screening, we are proud to finally announce the worldwide release of the DVD:

"American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art", the documentary about the history and subculture of rock poster art in America, will finally be released on DVD on Saturday, March 27th, 2010.

The double DVD will feature the movie, close to two hours of extras and deleted scenes, and director's commentary.

"American Artifact" movie premiere in NYC Oct 15th

"American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art", will be the opening night film for the Royal Flush Festival, NYC on October 15th, 2009, at Anthology Film Archives.

Director Merle Becker, and artists Tara McPherson and Lindsey Kuhn will be present for Q&A after the screening.

The long awaited NYC premiere of the movie will also be followed by an art show featuring work by some of the artists in the film, including: Tara McPherson, Art Chantry, Jay Ryan, Emek, Leia Bell, Scrojo, Justin Hampton, Jermaine Rogers, Stainboy, and Hatch Show Print.

The festival, which also features appearances by artist Ron English and Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole), is named after it's underground pop culture magazine, Royal Flush Magazine.

"American Artifact" will be screening at Anthology Film Archives (32 2nd Ave., NYC) at 7pm, followed by the rock poster art show, which will be at The Showroom NYC (117 Second Ave., NYC, 2nd Floor). The American Artifact Rock Poster Art show will be running until Sunday, Oct.18th.

"American Artifact" movie premiere in Milwaukee this weekend

"American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art", a documentary about the America's current rock poster art movement, will be having it's Milwaukee premiere on Saturday, October 10th, 2009 at 1p and 3p at The Times Cinema.

Artist Steve Walters and director Merle Becker will be present for Q&A after the screenings.

The Milwaukee premiere of the movie will also be followed by an art show featuring work by some of the artists in the film, including: Lindsey Kuhn, Emek, Piz, Jay Ryan, and Steve Walters.

Went to the screening of American Artifact the other night. You guys are going to love this movie when you see it. Mark Arminski was on hand with a display of his posters also. Merle Becker, the writer and director of the movie was on hand answering questions and signing anything people put in front of her.

Got a copy of the DVD and it is really cool. The extra disk features extended interviews with the artists and some that did not make the final cut. EMEK fans are really going to like it. There is a good segment with Jim Pollock also that the Phish fans are going to want to see. There is even a chapter on how to silk screen your own posters. One of the best segments was a Q&A with 7 of the artist after one of the screenings earlier this year.

Gary Grimshaw, Carl Lundgren and Jagmo were on hand also. Great night with a bunch of great artists.

"American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art" has announced new screenings!

As I first reported HERE. The release date is getting closer.

First, an additional 5p show has been added to the San Francisco Premiere at the Red Vic on June 20th. Come check out the World Premiere of the movie either at 5p or 7p. There are still a few tickets left for the 7p show, so if you're planning on attending, and would like to see the later show, it's suggested that you act fast! Advance tickets for both shows are suggested, and can be purchased at: http://www.AmericanArtifactMovie.com.

Also, we're doing a movie screening / art show with Sacramento rock poster artist, Paul Imagine (as well as some surprise guests) on June 23rd at the Crest Theater in Sacramento, CA. There will be Q&A with Paul / guests, and the director, afterwards.

Also new this week, is the announcement of the Detroit Premiere, which will be at the Henry Ford Museum in their IMAX Theater on August 20th. This screening will be in conjunction with the Henry Ford's "Rock Stars' Cars & Guitars 2" exhibit featuring the work of Detroit rock poster artist, Mark Arminski. After the movie, there will be Q&A with Mark and the director.

"American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art" is scheduled to premiere June 20th

"American Artifact: The Rise of American Rock Poster Art", the long-awaited documentary about the history and resurgence of the American Rock Poster, is scheduled to premiere June 20th, in San Francisco, as part of The Rock Poster Society's "Rock Art By The Bay" event.

The film, four years in the making, is the story of one of America's truest folk art forms, the rock poster.

Beginning in the 1960s in San Franciso with the birth of the dance concert, a rock poster accompanied almost every show that was put on during that era.

"At the time, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead were not played on the radio, and the only way you could advertise their shows, was by hanging posters in the streets", explains author Robert Greenfield, from the film.

Soon, people began pulling the posters off of the telephone polls, almost as quickly as they were put up, and promoters such as Bill Graham started to give them out at the end of his shows to advertise the next week's show.

The art, both beautiful and edgy, closely parallels the changes in American culture throughout the decades.

"Posters" in the '80s were "flyers" done for punk shows on Xerox machines in local libraries, or at Kinko's. They were glued to buildings and phone poles surreptitiously at night by kids in the scene. In this pre-computer era, the flyers were, for lack of a better comparison, "the MySpace of the '80s".

Today, America is seeing a resurgence in this art form, brought upon by the popularity of websites like Gigposters.com, and the ease of silk screening.

This extraordinary film, which includes interviews with over 30 artists, takes the viewer on a journey through the different decades and incarnations of this rebellious art form, and spends time with, arguably, some of the finest artists of this era.
