New York photographer Ricky Powell returns with this iconic photo of Run DMC taken in Paris during the Together Forever tour in May of 1987.

"We were in Paris and we had a day off. So I ended up with Run DMC and we were just walking around like tourists. I said 'Yo jump up over here.' I would always say that to them, and they would kinda laugh at me like 'Oh, here goes Ricky again. Here he goes with his visions…' So I just directed them where to go stand because I would always say 'You’re going to thank me one day.' So they humored me and then they got into it. They were getting into the poses and having some fun. I was actually crunching on a crusty croissant while I was snapping these flicks. I would hold the croissant with one hand and snap the flicks with my other. I shot it with a regular little camera, but I always shot with slide film, so it always looked very professional. Run DMC used it on their greatest hits album as well. I was very fortunate. It is one of my most prized photographs in my “30 Years Of Pro Photos On The Hang Out Tip."- Ricky Powell

Ricky Powell Beastie Boys The Charles Street Shuffle Print Release

1 comment:

Born and raised in New York City, Ricky Powell is a legendary photographer who specializes in the environmental portrait. On Thursday he has a dope new print release from 1xRUN featuring The Beastie Boys in The Charles Street Shuffle.

“This shot was from my first ‘official’ photo shoot with the Beastie Boys. We went out by the schoolyard on Charles Street and Greenwich Avenue. That was kind of a focal meeting place for everybody who grew up in the Village. We thought, whatever, we’ll shoot at the yard. Rick Rubin was there. Cey Adams was there. So we just did shots off the cuff.

At that point I was shooting pictures for about a year. I got transfigurationed from Joe Schmuck into The Rickster - Downtown Club Photographer. This was just as I was discovering what my whole steez was with photography. It’s this. It’s easy, breezy. Natural. Relaxed. I just see what I like and I push the button. I think my personality chemically worked with them. I had them laughing all the time. We made an image together that’s dope. That’s the way I like to look at it. That’s it. It was good times.” - Ricky Powell

You will have you choice of the getting the print on aluminum or canvas.

Ricky Powell Andy Warhol & Jean Michel Basquiat Soho NYC 1985 Print

1 comment:

1xRUN have another new artist debuting Wednesday and that is Ricky Powell who is a legendary photographer who specializes in the environmental portrait. His prints are Andy Warhol & Jean Michel Basquiat Soho NYC.

"This photo was taken in the fall of 1985 in New York City. I went down to the Basquait and Warhol show on Mercer street at Tony Shafrazi Gallery. I was across the street taking some photos of Zephyr and Revolt, the dynamic duo that had just done the "Wild Style" logo, which was pretty sharp. Taking photos of Zephyr and Revolt was a huge thrill for me, because they Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. They were really cool together. But I see Basquait and Warhol coming from diagonally across the street on Houston street towards the gallery. So I skedaddled across the street, a slow jog across the street and I shrugged my shoulders and said "You guys mind if i get a flick? please?" Then Basquait looked at Warhol and said yea he’s cool. So they paused for me. I said thanks and they went back into this big crowd that was waiting for them. So this was the jump off for me. I shot two dynamic duos in a minute there. I just had a natural knack for it. It’s something I love to do and doors opened up for me from there. This picture has turned out to be a very classic and iconic image." - Ricky Powell

You will have you choice of two mediums for this image either 14 x 10 inch Archival Pigment Print on Aluminum or a massive 44 x 32 Inches Archival Pigment Print on 310gsm Fine Art Paper.
