Derek Hess One Fish, Two Fish, B-24 Fish, Raw Sienna Fish Print Release

No comments:

Derek Hess is an avid fisherman and loves to bring that into his work when he can, something less heavy and more fun then his usual images. 1xRUN is releasing his newest print One Fish, Two Fish, B-24 Fish, Raw Sienna Fish
"These are all Dr. Seuss fish mixed with the B-24 Liberator. They all have different markings from different theaters of the war they were based in.

Overall this is a continuing series of my fish morphed with World War II aircrafts. All of the fish are native North American species, except for the Dr. Seuss fish, which I am assuming are American as well.

Since this release is close to D-Day, many of the fish are marked with D-Day invasion stripes. The allies had all of their planes marked black and white so there would be less confusion during the landing.

Some of the adversaries in these pieces are my standard goldfish crackers, marked with either German or Japanese insignias." - Derek Hess
This print and 8 originals will be on sale at NOON EDT on Friday at 1xRUN.com

Derek Hess Fish Fry Friday Original Art Sale

No comments:

Derek Hess returns to 1xRUN Friday with whole mess of original art and sketches in what they are calling Fish Fry Friday. In case you did not know Derek is an avid fisherman.

"This group is themed exclusively for 1xRUN. My first batch was done in 2010/2011 and showed during the World's Largest Crappie Festival in Water Valley Mississippi, that was awesome. All are were made using pen, ink, and acrylic. My father was a B-26 pilot and my dad helped instill the interest in the subject. Two of the pieces feature a rock bass morphed with a B-26. These are completely different from what I normally do, whatever 'normal' means. Anyway, these were just a lot of fun to do. Where as some of the intense pieces that I do I feel I have to do, as to purge it from my system, which works half the time (I tend to carry that stuff with me). I wanted to do these for fun and are a great distraction." - Derek Hess

24 new pieces of work will go on sale NOON EDT Friday at 1xRUN.com

Derek Hess Burned Out Laser Etched Art on Wood

No comments:

Legendarily rock poster artist Derek Hess returns to 1xRUN Friday with a new piece of work that is laser etched into wood and it is titled Burned Out. This ready to hang piece of art measures 20 x 10 inches

This 'Burned Out' is burned or etched into the wood, the red on the arms I laid down with a wire brush, I worked fast with the crude tools to keep the feel consistent with the rest of the piece. The first laser etched piece done with 1xRUN, Hemorrhage, came out so nice and true to the original that another one would be cool to try. Burned Out was a no brainer, it's burned out..

What is cool about these pieces is they are all part of an edition, all the figures are handled the same, so it is a true edition. But at the same time each one is unique because the red is different on every one. What I find very cool about this piece is you get a unique one of a kind signed and numbered edition print, it's the best of both worlds." - Derek Hess

Derek Hess Hemorrhage Laser Etched Art on Wood

No comments:

Derek Hess has another incredible release Thursday from 1xRUN, Hemorrhage Laser Etched Art on Wood. I was fortunate to see one of these up close when I was in town for his show last month and they look sick in person.

Only 30 of these will be for sale and they are 10 x 28 Inches Laser Etching with Acrylic Hand-Embellishments on Wood

This piece of original art is ready to hang.

Note: Each piece in this series will be uniquely hand-painted by Derek Hess and will vary slightly from the example shown.

"This piece has to do with closure...or the lack of it. You have been emotionally hurt for an unknown reason. The bleeding won't stop because there was no explanation, the wound, the heart continues to hemorrhage.

I feel this is an emotion all of us can relate to...what brought you there is your own story, the common thread is we've all been there." - Derek Hess

Derek Hess "Critical Infrastructure Against External Threats" Gallery Show at Inner State Gallery

No comments:

1xRUN & Strhess Present:

New Work from Derek Hess Opens March 21st
Join Us For Hess' First Detroit Solo Exhibition In Over 10 Years!

Opening March 21st from 7-10pm, Inner State Gallery is proud to showcase new work from acclaimed artist Derek Hess. "Critical Infrastructure Against External Threats" is a continuing examination of Hess’ evolving body of work that explores his use of line and form to create a sense of emotion and depth.

The show will feature new work highlighting Hess’ recent reclaiming of long lost vinyl album covers, 8-tracks and Playboy magazines, all alongside his signature pen and ink pieces. The show will be Hess’ first Detroit solo show since 2002.

Throughout the last 25 years, Hess has created hundreds of rock posters and album covers for bands ranging the spectrum of rock music from Pink Floyd, Iggy Pop, Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails to Pantera, Clutch, Deftones and countless others. Solidifying his place in rock music history Hess’ work has joined permanent collections at the Louvre in Paris as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Musee de la Publicite at the Palais du Louvre called his work "...a remarkable series of posters" and the European journal of poster art, called his work "the most highly sought after concert posters in the world".

Recently, Hess has turned his obsessive concentration on the human form to a vast series of grease pencil nudes on retro Playboy covers from the 60’s and 70’s - the very same issues Hess first discovered as a fourth grader in his father’s closet. The nostalgia brought back by the taboo material of Hess’ childhood made the project even more fun for the artist. Drawing loose and fast, Hess was able to capture the vibrant feeling of the figure. In 2013 the limited edition book “He Ain’t No Vargas” was released. The book has drawings spanning Hess’ earliest experimentation with Playboy covers in 2010 all the way into his most recent works done in August, 2013.

He will also have his Suicide Notes Prints that printed on old album covers

Derek Hess Heavy Heart Print

No comments:

Derek Hess has released a new print titled Heavy Heart.

Derek on the creation of the print

this piece was inspired by a significant loss in my life. heavy heart is about where i was, not how i got there. it's meant to reflect where that was, where words can't describe. my route there was through jose's death, that was my journey. others have different journeys but the destination is the same, it takes you "there". being "there" is a universal feeling everyone has to experience...everyone has been there....or will be, it's part of the human experience.

The print is signed and numbered edition of 300, 22 1/4 x 28", printed on 100# uncoated archival acid free cover paper.

Derek Hess Playboy December 1971 Print On Sale Today

No comments:

"When the idea to draw nudes on adult magazine covers came to me, Playboy was the obvious choice. The main reason for the 1960's and 1970's covers was due to my formative years, those issues were my first exposure to naked women, thanks to my Dad and the top shelf of his closet. Another reason is the integrity Playboy has. There is no shock. There are tasteful photos that compliment, not degrade women. They also withstand the test of time, which these have or I wouldn't be working on them some 40 years since they were published. Out of the few hundred of these covers I worked on, these were the final choices to debut the print series, which was extremely difficult. It’s also a main reason why there book is in the works — which has Hugh Hefner’s blessing — to cover more of them. We decided on these three pieces for a few reasons, the drawing fundamentals, the composition, and that these were basically a few that I was really having fun with." - Derek Hess

Derek Hess NVA Flightless Bird Print On Sale Today

No comments:

Joining 1xRUN for his 2nd RUN they welcome back the incomparable Derek Hess. For his first RUN, Derek brought us the intricate line work of the musically themed "Ground" inspired by Celtic Frost (and Electric Light Orchestra...)

For this RUN, Derek brings us one of his latest pieces with the hybrid of the North Vietnamese battle tank spliced with an ostrich for the NVA Flightless Bird.

"I'm a big fan of tanks. The idea came to me one day that the beak and head of a bird could work as a tank turret. The title of this piece "NVA Flightless Bird" is the combination of a North Vietnamese army tank turret and an ostrich. The North Vietnamese army was referred to as the NVA during the war. The turret is from a soviet T-54 tank, the Russians supplied North Vietnam with weapons during the Vietnam war, and the ostrich is known as a flightless bird. Everyone needs and image of an ostrich with a T-54 tank turret head flying a North Vietnam flag rocking Nike high heels wading through the wreckage of American tanks hanging above their mantle." - Derek Hess

NVA Flightless Bird is 16 x 20 Inches Archival Pigment Print on 330gsm Fine Art Paper with an edition of 40 signed and numbered

On Sale today at NOON EST at 1xRUN.com. They will also have the original sketch and painting on sale as well

Derek Hess Rush Poster Cleveland On Sale

No comments:

For the first time in over 6 years Derek Hess has done a rock concert poster. Some how Rush got him to do one for the show in Cleveland this past weekend. The poster is a 5 color serigraph, 36" x 20", edition of 150.

Derek Hess on how he designed the poster :

ok...a few things going on here...it's 5 colors...two reds in the back, one metallic silver, a dark red / brown of the symbols and a black for the main figure and text. the two in the back are to reflect the color palate of the record 'clockwork angels' which this poster is for the cleveland stop on that tour. the main image of that records art work revolves around symbols on a clock's face. so i took the iconic rush start and laid the symbols around the circle like a clock. then three of the symbols i replaced with three angels..'clockwork angels'..and the three also represent the three members of rush. final i did a gestural drawing of the rush guy against the federation in black to pull him away from the rest of the piece to keep it from flattening out
