Artist statement:

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has announced that the conservation status of the giant manta ray (or oceanic manta ray) has been changed from Vulnerable to Endangered on the Red List of Threatened Species.

Their current status is a direct result of unsustainable pressure from fishing, The ever-increasing demand for their body parts has fuelled both existing and emerging target fisheries. This relatively new Asian-based trade seems to be impacting the giant manta more than other species of manta ray, which now threatens to destabilize their populations across the globe.

Syngnathidae is a family of bony fishes that includes seahorses, seadragons, pipefish and pipehorses. These small, charismatic creatures are important symbols of healthy ocean ecosystems, and they are disappearing. Each year, millions are swept up in trawl nets as bycatch, and millions more are traded illegally for use in traditional medicine and as dried curiosities in souvenir shops. Development, pollution, agricultural fertilizer runoff, and ocean warming driven by the climate crisis are all making life untenable for those that evade capture. By protecting our marine waters, and supporting the work of organizations like Project Seahorse, The Seahorse Trust, and the IUCN SSC Seahorse, Pipefish, and Seadragon Specialist Group, we can preserve these incredible ocean jewels, and the ecosystems they call home, for generations to come.

"Mangroves are home to some of the most diverse ecosystems in existence. Every inch of them teeming with diversified life, from fish to birds, reptiles to big cats. Mangroves are truly magical. They are enchanting and an integral part of mitigating climate change. Unfortunately, every year more and more are disappearing due to coastal development.

In this painting, I chose to use the flying Egrets to represent moving upwards on onwards from our current climate situation, and their glow represents the importance of doing so. Having them move from left to right, mirroring the smoke and smog of the city is implying that this is the correct way to go. I have the mangrove tiger moving from right to left to represent their population moving in the wrong direction. I chose to make the smoke from the city imitate the veiny tangles of branches and vines of the Mangrove forests. The colored editions of this piece are meant to show the magic that the Mangroves possess, while the black and white versions are meant to represent the somber and heavy mood of what is actually taking place, which is the steady decline of these magical water forests due to coastal development." - McMonster

"Coming from a farm and ranch background in the desert of New Mexico, I quickly learned to value water. I had the privilege to see the Ocean for the first time when I was about 23, and since then my appreciation of natural resources significantly increased. Being a respectful steward to the Earth and understanding that its beauty relies on our upkeep and stewardship is critical.

When I migrated to LA and found myself closer to the oceans, I also found myself realizing how much a populated area can affect the ocean’s delicate ecosystem. Being an artist has allowed me to travel the world and see the bodies of water that cover it. It’s heartbreaking to see how some of our oceans aren’t treated with the same care as others. PangeaSeed Foundation has done an amazing job of connecting and educating thousands of people by joining facts about our ocean’s needs with artistic expression to spread awareness.

The issue of maintaining the oceans is important to me, so I was thrilled to team up and share my print of “The Octopus.” Octopuses are highly intelligent animals, known for their ability to adapt in their environment. Many have been known to use resources available to them, such as coconut shells to build little houses for themselves. When needing to take quick cover or blend in, octopuses can camouflage themselves. These two facts alone drive home that these amazing animals have taught themselves how to survive in their ecosystems as they are. Therefore, we need to help protect it. "Island" was originally conceived for the UN World Oceans Week hosted by the Explorer's Club as a virtual event last year. The work was created live from my studio with daily check-in video chats alongside PangeaSeed Foundation's Tre Packard in between lectures by leading marine biologists, climate scientists, innovators, and explorers. A bit humbling to say the least. The resulting image illustrates ecosystem interdependence, particularly the connection of life on land to the health of the oceans.

Artist statement:

The amount of plastic that enters the oceans on a daily basis is a staggering statistic. It can seem like an impossible task. I grew up in the coastal south and became all too familiar with what is left in the wake of a people carving an existence in a fragile ecosystem. These plastics are a byproduct of our increasing convenience-based lives.

There is a dark comedy in seeing the ways nature attempts to make use of our carelessness. I made this painting referencing some of the different juxtapositions I've seen on our coastlines. Resourceful shorebirds making homes from the endless debris that washes ashore. While there is something endearing about how nature overcomes and adapts to how we've shaped the world, it also serves as a reminder that our abundant use of plastics reach farther than we can imagine.

Artist statement:

The core of my practice stems from my interest in locating folk art’s place in a globalized world. I seek to create a multi-cultural dialogue that explores the consistencies of visual culture throughout time, beginning with ancient artisans and extending to contemporary artists. I was convinced from an early age growing up in Cuernavaca, Mexico that communities can be sustained through art-making. Like the craftspeople who integrate life into the creation of ceramics and textiles—nothing less than a certain form of magic—I embrace the imperfections of the hand- made—the organic forms and vibrant colors that have the power to remove the individual identity of the artist in favor of a more universal expression of “folk art.”

By uniting the imagery of traditional Mexican folk art with the vernacular of urban contemporary art, I’m trafficking in the nuanced relationship between artistic tradition and global influences, in the process of finding the relationship between community and culture. The lineage of west coast mural work looms large in my practice: art functioning as a symbol of resistance, transforming overlooked spaces into something beautiful - a daily revolution in the form of creating.

As the majestic humpback whale glides through the water it brings with it vibrant and glowing splashes of color that offer a glimmer of hope for these beautiful giants of the seas.

Whales, and other sea creatures, are greatly threatened by plastic pollution, not only by ingesting pieces of trash, but also due to the build-up of toxic chemicals from plastic, litter, and oil spills in their systems, which seriously affects their health and fertility." - Sonny

"The Figurehead" by supporting ARTivist Marc Obrien - Doras (Canada), this limited art print edition highlights the impacts of over fishing. Unfortunately, fisheries and aquaculture are wreaking havoc on the world's oceans. On a global scale, we have enough fishing capacity to cover at least four Earth-like planets.

In just over half a century, humans have managed to wipe out 90 percent of the ocean’s top predators. These are animals like sharks, bluefin tuna, swordfish, marlin, and king mackerel.

Artist Statement:

"With “The Figurehead”, I wanted to illustrate some of the driving forces behind the destructive practices in the commercial fishing industry, particularly over consumption and over fishing. Soon after taking on this print design challenge with PangeaSeed Foundation, an image of this beast of a fishing vessel, trawling through the ocean like an opulent colonial ship, forced its way into my sketches. This is the kind of ship that historically brought with it a similar entitlement to, and reckless depletion of, precious resources.

Of course at the head of any serious vessel was the figurehead, a sculptural embodiment of the ship’s purpose. In this sense, although a real solution to the problem of over fishing will require the help of international policymakers, we as consumers are the ones strapped to the prow. We wield the collective symbolic power that is embedded in our consumption choices. We need to try our best not to disassociate from the source of our food, like the indifferent maiden at the front of this vessel, and be especially conscious that if at all, we are eating seafood that is non-threatened or sustainably farmed or harvested.

Amok Island Endangered Marine Species of the World Poster Release

PangeaSeed Foundation is pleased to announce the latest print release in their 2020 print project, "In Peril: A Visual Story of Our Ocean's Greatest Challenges". Featuring original artwork by supporting ARTivist Amok Island (Netherlands), this stunning limited art print edition highlights the mass extinction of endangered marine species.

We are amidst the largest period of species extinction in the last 60 million years. Normally, between one and five species will go extinct annually. However, scientists estimate that we are now losing species at 1,000 to 10,000 times the normal rate, with multiple extinctions daily. Multiple species will disappear before we learn about them or the benefits they bring to our planet.

I chose to highlight a selection of endangered marine species that I personally admire and want to help spotlight. If we can all see these animals with fresh eyes and understand their importance, we might have a chance to save them. I feel my art can help give these voiceless species a creative voice, and in turn, inspire and educate others to be better stewards of our oceans and planet." - Amok Island

"Coming from a farm and ranch background in the desert of New Mexico, I quickly learned to value water. I had the privilege to see the Ocean for the first time when I was about 23, and since then my appreciation of natural resources significantly increased. Being a respectful steward to the Earth and understanding that its beauty relies on our upkeep and stewardship is critical.

When I migrated to LA and found myself closer to the oceans, I also found myself realizing how much a populated area can affect the ocean’s delicate ecosystem. Being an artist has allowed me to travel the world and see the bodies of water that cover it. It’s heartbreaking to see how some of our oceans aren’t treated with the same care as others. PangeaSeed Foundation has done an amazing job of connecting and educating thousands of people by joining facts about our ocean’s needs with artistic expression to spread awareness.

The issue of maintaining the oceans is important to me, so I was thrilled to team up and share my print of “The Octopus.” Octopuses are highly intelligent animals, known for their ability to adapt in their environment. Many have been known to use resources available to them, such as coconut shells to build little houses for themselves. When needing to take quick cover or blend in, octopuses can camouflage themselves. These two facts alone drive home that these amazing animals have taught themselves how to survive in their ecosystems as they are. Therefore, we need to help protect it. After all, most of these guys have three hearts. The least we could do is use our one.” - Drew Merritt
