James Jean Azimuth Catalog & Art Print Release

Azimuth is a catalog of James Jean's new work exhibited at Kaikai Kiki Gallery in April 2018 in Tokyo, Japan. Included in the volume are exploratory and ancillary works created in the same period, as well as process images. Expanding upon the preliminary version of the catalog originally released during the exhibition, this edition includes additional installation images and an afterword by Takashi Murakami. The book's hardbound cloth cover features a tipped-in plate with spot gloss and foil accents, and the interior includes pearlescent endpapers, red gilded edges, and a signed and numbered bookplate. Released concurrently, each of three slipcase editions features a custom-engineered cloth case with a magnetic enclosure that opens to reveal a foil-embossed giclée print within. The three slipcases are Vapor/orange, Immortal/grey, Stargaze/green.

The first printing of the Azimuth catalog will be limited to 1000 copies and each of the three slipcase editions will be limited to only 200 copies.

James Jean Max Pipe Art Print Release

James Jean's new print, Max Pipe is a signed and numbered time-limited edition of giclée prints. The image is an homage to the painting Attirement of the Bride (La Toilette de la mariée) by Max Ernst. True to this age of decadent surrealism, this print features an elaborate sculpted die that accentuates each detail in the peacock and pipe, along with foil stamping in multiple colors throughout. Additionally, transparent holographic foil gives the body of the peacock an otherworldly iridescent sheen. The number of enhancements and dies required for Max Pipe makes this his most complex and lavishly produced print to date. James Jean Mother Movie Poster Release

James Jean is releasing a new print to coincide with the movie. mother! is a signed and numbered limited edition of giclée prints. Working directly with Darren Aronofsky, Jean created the image for mother! As the launch poster for the movie, which features a collection of Easter eggs from the enigmatic story. The print features an ornate gold foil embossed title, a blind embossment of a crystal heart, and a gold foil chop.

The print measure 23 x 33.5 inches. It will be a limited edition of only 100 pieces.

“Udon II” was created specifically for a billboard in Sawtelle Japantown in Los Angeles. Also known as “Little Osaka,” this historic area is filled with all sorts of Asian culinary delights.

I’ve been going to Sawtelle for many years, and while waiting in line for ramen, I would always feel oppressed by the vulgar advertisements looming overhead on this one particular billboard. So, using my own resources, I placed “Udon II” at Sawtelle Boulevard between La Grange Avenue and Mississippi Avenue as an homage to the area and the many memories I have from visiting this unique neighborhood.

There’s no name, text, or signature on the billboard – just an image of a gingko sprite feeding her offspring noodles from the head of a kappa. It will be displayed directly above Giant Robot Gallery on Sawtelle Boulevard until the end of April, 2017.

Jason Noble benefit auctions of original art from Kenichi Hoshine and James Jean

Many of you in the poster and print community may remember the two large sets of prints that have been created to help Jason Noble. One was done in 2009 (See it HERE) and another in 2011 (See HERE)

Kenichi Hoshine is auctioning several original panels from the Polite Winter (http://www.politewinter.com/) series. Polite Winter is an online, visual "conversation" that her friend and fellow artist, James Jean and her started back in 2004. A percentage of the total auction proceeds will be donated to Jason Noble to help with his ongoing fight with cancer. Jason is a musician/artist who has been involved in bands such as Rodan, Shipping News and Rachel’s and is a pivotal figure in the Louisville, KY music scene. The proceeds will also be donated to other charities.

The auctions will start at $100 and there are no reserves.
