Mishka Westell Jack White Patty Griffin Agave Posters & More

No comments:

Mishka Westell has 5 new posters she just released.

Details from her:

I created this 'Brick Man' print for Jack White's Tulsa show last week. I was working with melancholic themes of solitude and isolation, self-imposed and enforced. But the image also represents hope - a glimpse of freedom and possibilities, a way to break out of a situation. We all need an eyehole in our brick wall!

Hayes Carll and The Tender Things played at the legendary Texas venue Greune Hall last week - built in 1878 and the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas. The picturesque town features a beautiful river and iconic water tower which I wanted to include but in an abstract way. And the night of the show was a rare 'supermoon'. I have just a few personal copies of this one.

I love working with Patty Griffin so much, for this most recent tour poster we discussed themes of rebirth and regeneration and wanted to reference a phoenix rising from the ashes in some way. In my research I accidentally came across the French Nouveau artist Erté, and was inspired to try and create something in a similar style, a fun departure from anything I've done before. Yet using more saturated colours and patterns verging on psychedelic/Indian textiles.

IFC Films asked me to create an 'old school Austin' style poster for their latest film about the legendary country musician Blaze Foley, directed by Ethan Hawke. Having seen and loved the film I was excited to draw this one. Ethan and the musician/actor Ben Dickey toured Texas to promote the film and gave these out free to attendees. Blaze was nick-named the Duct Tape Messiah because he liked to utilize it in so many ways, adding it to his boots and clothing. A tragic but compelling story that I recommend you go see.

Finally, way back in June I made a linoleum print for the annual Marfa Agave Festival, which celebrates the culture and history of the agave cactus - including it's uses in food and drink and textiles. The prints in my store are silkscreens taken from the block print.

Mishka Westell Jack White Austin Armadillo Poster

No comments:

Mishka Westell had the exciting opportunity to make an art print for Jack White’s show at the 360 Amphitheater in Austin, Texas last week. Quantities were small and sold out quickly, but she is offering the remainder of the edition at mishkawestell.com/shop

This is a not a silkscreen but a hand-carved linoleum block print, on Stonehenge 90lb, 100% cotton, acid-free archival paper with deckled edges. Final size with 3″ border is 22 x 18″. Signed and numbered, of a limited edition of 111, half of which sold at the Austin show, this will never be reprinted.

Due to the highly time consuming and difficult nature of the printing method, these prints will ship the week of June 4th.

Tonight's TOMAHAWK Poster from Boston By Mishka Westell World Premier Exclusive

3 comments:

Soundcheck in Boston

Get ready Boston you are the first city to witness the return of Tomahawk to the stage for the first time since 2003 tonight.

Tomahawk is back!
Where were they? What were they doing? Is this a reunion? Who are they now? What's next?

Tomahawk is an experimental alternative metal/alternative rock supergroup from the United States. They formed in 2000 when Fantômas, ex-Mr. Bungle and Faith No More singer/keyboardist Mike Patton and ex-The Jesus Lizard guitar player Duane Denison started swapping tapes with the intention of collaborating. Duane Denison then recruited ex-Helmet drummer John Stanier (currently playing with Battles), while Mike Patton brought Melvins/Cows bass player Kevin Rutmanis into the fold. Three phenomenal recordings came from this formation. Kevin left the band in 2007, taking his place is Trevor Dunn, ex-Mr. Bungle, Fantomas player.

Tomahawk took a break to discover the many truths of the universe. They also uncovered several non truths. They were primarily holed up in a special place similar to the many caves in the mountains of Appalachia. They found time to create the new tunes that make up their new record OddfellowS that was released worldwide in January 2013 on Ipecac Recordings.

So what does all of this mean? It means that Tomahawk is back! Rock and roll will be saved and destroyed. They plan to play live shows for the first time since 2003 and are willing to go anywhere as long as they can get a warm bed with cold pillows, a square meal and a boatload of cash.

They are playing 5 dates in the US before heading to Europe for the summer. For those 5 dates, special posters were created for each show by different artists and the only place you will see them first is here. I will be exclusively debuting the poster for each show that night, 5 dates, 5 posters and 5 different artists. Let me tell you they all look amazing.

The poster for the show tonight in Boston is done by Mishka Westell. The poster is 18 x 24 with an edition of 150. She has been doing posters for just a few years but has a growing number of fans that love her psychedelic inspired work.  She will be selling posters after the show in her ETSY Store HERE at 10 CDT tonight
