Chris Shaw Primus Baltimore Poster Release

Been awhile since Chris Shaw released a poster but he still has those mad skills that never left the building and Chuck Sperry helped him print it as well.

When the infamous Zoltron asked me if I wanted to make a Primus poster this season and Green Elvis was mentioned there was no way I could say no.  It was 24 years ago in 1994 when I made my first Green Elvis rock poster …for Primus at the Fillmore.  It’s always been one of my favorite posters, complete with Day-Glo inks – if Green Elvis was going to make a comeback Day-Glo had to be included.  Green Elvis is again portrayed as a classic Christian icon, but in this new version I got in pretty deep with the classic geometry and symbols which is more related to my recent artwork and icons.  Its a nice hybrid of my old and new art.

I was thrilled to do this poster. I love Soundgar­den, its a local show, and bet­ter, it meant I got to work with my good pal Chuck Sperry printin’ at Hangar 18. This is the sec­ond of a pair of posters for Soundgarden’s Oak­land shows at the Fox on the 12th and 13th of Feb. The first poster is a beauty by Chuck that can be seen at www.chucksperry.net

Chuck and I decided on some col­lab­o­ra­tion to make the 2 posters a loose pair – though an odd pair they may be. After decid­ing on a size, color for­mat, and a gen­eral theme riff­ing on Soundgarden’s “King Ani­mal” album title, we both sim­ply did our thing.

My poster’s image is The Madonna of the Squid. Mod­ern Icons are a theme I’ve worked with for a long time, mainly with paint­ings, but occa­sion­ally they make it onto rock posters as well. I con­ceived a Giant Squid incor­po­rated into a clas­sic ortho­dox Madonna. Chuck was work­ing with ideas about power, priv­i­lege and State. My image is about the many ten­ta­cles of the Church. Church & State. Its not intended to be a dark piece or brash polit­i­cal state­ment, but, like most of my work there’s some under­ly­ing metaphors. I won’t get into it deeply here, how­ever, I will say that I don’t par­tic­u­larly like squids and sea mon­sters, yet they fas­ci­nate me.

The screen­print siz­zles with 6 col­ors, includ­ing gold and sil­ver, cre­at­ing some killer metal­lic color effects. I also used a trans­par­ent black ink for the black plate which brings out some deep tones and tex­tures with the under­ly­ing ink lay­ers. Many of the metal­lic tex­tures and mez­zot­ints were cre­ated by hand with wax on old-school blue­line, the piece has a real ana­log feel. A big thanks to Chuck for his exper­tise and alchemy to make this print look great.

Chuck Sperry & Chris Shaw Pearl Jam Oslo Poster On Sale

Pearl Jam's Ten Club will be selling Chuck Sperry and Chris Shaw's killer poster from the Oslo Norway show today. The poster from the recent European tour measures 22 x 33 with 5 poppin colors of silk screen goodness.

I teamed up with Chris Shaw to make Pearl Jam’s Oslo poster. Chris and I have both made Pearl Jam posters in the mid-1990′s. So Oslo’s Pearl Jam poster is a mix of New School and Old School Rock Poster Art.Since the theme of the PJ tour posters are VS, we immediately thought of a Ying-Yang form as a good way to communicate that idea.
Then we thought of that crazy “Norway Spiral” that filled the night sky over Norway a couple years back (because we both love unexplained and mysterious phenomena like that, even if it was probably a Russian rocket spinning out of control).  We gave it a psychedelic edge by making a Ying-Yang out of the form of the Norway Spiral, and creating two flying eyeballs, representing the opposing forces of Fire and Water. We wanted this poster to have a touch of skater punk, Psychedelia, and to just be iconic and bad-ass.

The small, subtle, silver spirals in the background, not only mirrors the Ying-Yang of the central image, but is inspired by Rosemalling, which is a Norwegian folk-art of decorative painting. This form of decoration originated in the rural valleys of Norway during the Baroque and Rococo Period in the mid 18th Century. It was a folk response to the intricate designs the wealthy folks in Norway were importing. The forms are usually simple and based on “C” and “S” forms. That seemed appropriate since Chris Shaw and Chuck Sperry are both “CS” names

Accord­ing to Moon­al­ice leg­end, today’s poster by Chuck Sperry and Chris Shaw depicts Jerry Gar­cia Moon­al­ice, ace pitcher of the Moon­al­ice Dark Stars of the High Sierra Lit­tle League.  After fail­ing to match the suc­cess of Morde­cai “Three Fin­ger” Brown, even with an extra fin­ger, Jerry ulti­mately switched to music, where he achieved immortality.

Tonight's Pearl Jam Poster from Oslo Norway by Chuck Sperry and Chris Shaw On Sale Details

As Pearl Jam's European tour winds down, tonight's poster is done by a couple of old school San Francisco artists Chuck Sperry and Chris Shaw. This collaboration series of posters has been great. Can't wait to see who Todd McFarlane is paired with tomorrow night.

Art in the streets Temporally Bound (Three Gorgons): An installation by Chris Shaw & Chuck Sperry

This is just an incredible display of work by Chuck Sperry and Chris Shaw.

Chris Shaw and Chuck Sperry have been close friends for many years, but have only worked in tan­dem cre­at­ing art on a hand­ful of occa­sions. Both artists have both incor­po­rated and appro­pri­ated con­cepts and imagery from a myr­iad of sources in their designs for Rock Posters and paintings.

“Tem­po­rally Bound” marks this col­lab­o­ra­tion by the two artists not only as an event, but also in the form and sub­ject of the art­work. The work’s form is derived from an asian “accor­dion” book, while the sub­ject, “Three Gor­gons” reflects the artists’ west­ern influ­ences. The free inter­twin­ing of East­ern and West­ern ref­er­ences is not only evoca­tive of the mod­ern tech­no­log­i­cal world, but also of San Fran­cisco, a cul­tural melt­ing pot on the Pacific Rim.

The dazzling blue-silver Zeppelin in this poster floats off the paper as if it was lighter than air, no wings needed. In this print Shaw uses classic techniques of line-screen collage paired Chuck Sperry's high-octane printing at The Firehouse Kustom Rockart Co. The result is an impressive image that equals more than the sum of its 3 colors. The use of a transparent black brings out additional tones and texture as the inks layer.

Chuck Sperry at Faya Gallery • New York City • Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Faya Gallery, 211 Elizabeth Street, New York City, has invited Chris Shaw, Chuck Sperry and Peter LeCompte to exhibit their newest work through the month of September. The opening is on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 6pm to 9pm. Sperry will be showing his newest poster work, Chris Shaw will be showing his newest paintings, and Peter LeCompte will show his newest hand-painted silkscreen pieces.

This exhibition is a fusion of the rock poster aesthetic and fine art.

In Chris Shaw’s work the rock poster aesthetic informs the painting medium; there is a mash-up of bold psychedelic poster stylings with very painterly techniques informed by Renaissance styles of picture-making and subject matter.

Peter LeCompte is like a DJ who orchestrates pre-arranged musical samples into a continuous mix while also highlighting their obscure connotations. Le Compte juggles memory and color into what appear to be the solidified icons of a recovered happiness – they hark back to the more anxiety-free days of our collective pre-Vietnam war childhood.

Chuck Sperry brings his masterfully created silkscreened rock posters, resonating with the styles drawn from the poster art form’s long tradition – ranging from the roots of the poster tradition in Art Nouveau and Vienna Secession style to Psychedelic, Rock, Punk, Post-Punk, Grunge, Stoner and Pop. In Sperry’s work you can trace the history of the poster medium from the end of the 19th Century to the beginning of the 21st.

You may be wondering whats up with the crazy pattern on the boat. It was used during World War 1 and some what in WW2 to confuse the enemies tracking and radar systems its called dazzle look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dazzle_camouflage

The dazzle camo was an early futurist artist application to military use.
It used the science of vision to confuse the object - confound detection - and camoflage something as big as a ship on the open ocean.
Optical art of the 1960-1970s used the same principles - Chris and Chuck just combined the two - brought the optical art themes together in one piece.

Chuck has an affinity to the optical theories inherent in these thematic strings in Art History - using patternization - like WSP - to express psychedelic images -to describe and define subject and ground.
