No comments:

John Howard did a poster for Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Subatomic Sound System at the Levitation show in Austin this weeked but due to some crazy weather it was one of the many shows that was cancelled. John is super happy to have had a chance to honor a Legend and, really an inspiration to him. Also a nod to Akiyoshi's anomalous motion illusions.

There is also a gold ink variant as well.

Danger No Smoking Shepard Fairey Print Release

No comments:

Shepard Fairey is dipping into his past for his latest print release titled Danger No Smoking.

Shepard gives a little back ground on the design:
This Danger No Smoking print is inspired by a screen print I made in 1990, which was the very first image I made addressing the environmental and health hazards of gasoline. I took this photograph in Providence, RI at the edge of a desolate graveyard, which probably intensified my interpretation of the peeling paint on the gas pump as a skull. I decided the symbolism provided by natural erosion was powerful enough to make the photo worthy of turning into a print. I always liked this image, and I rediscovered it while looking for images to include in a book surveying my entire history of environmentally themed art. I only made ten prints of the gas pump skull in 1990, so I decided I should make a new version of the image as a painting for my Paris art show, and an edition of prints accessible to more than 8 people (I kept two of the ten 1990 prints).

Pearl Jam David Welker New York Poster

2 comments:

I hope the folks at Madison Square Garden in New York were able to fix the lid on that place after Pearl Jam blew if off last night. Because they are about to do it again tonight for another sold out concert.

David Welker did the poster for tonight and the dragons just might do it as well.

I talked to David about the design:
When I listen to Pearl Jam and when think of Pearl Jam I am struck by the raw power and intensity of their delivery, their stage presence, their message and their unrivaled positivity. When I got the call from the band to do this poster it was just after Chinese New Year. I live very close to Chinatown here in New York and in my neighborhood there were parades and fireworks and dragons in the streets. I've been drawing and painting dragons for years. Astrologically I am a dragon. I have an obsession with the Chinese motif as well as the modern 20th Century Japanese monster movie incarnation of the dragon. For years I've wanted to do my interpretation of two intertwined dragons locked in motion together. This to me was a perfect representation of Pearl Jam's relationship to its fans. A Pearl Jam concert is very much about the bands involvement and inclusion of the audience in their music. The show itself becomes a huge participation. A joint effort. The fans sing every song along with Eddie Vedder and they do a very good job of extending the power of his voice. The whole experience of a Pearl Jam concert is this huge, powerful collaboration of energy. The dragon is a representation of pure, energy. Two dragons intertwined is an exponential magnification of this power and intensity. And when they both descend and collide into an amazing city like New York the experience is truly powerful. Even though the dragons may seem in one moment dangerous and menacing the city surges on around them, stopping to observe their awesome magnitude, unafraid of being crushed. In the next moment they will be gone.

Vice Press are excited to share the details of their next officially licensed screen print movie poster; the 1966 Hammer Horror classic Dracula: Prince of Darkness, starring Christopher Lee as Dracula with art by Francesco Francavilla.

Here is what artist Francesco Francavilla had to say about working on this piece:
"I grew up with horror movies and even before I was watching Argento & Italian horror, I was binging on the classic Universal Monsters movies and the 60s/70s bloody colorful Hammer movies. Karloff, Lugosi, Lee, Cushing, were all childhood friends of mine so needless to say I was ecstatic when Vice Press asked me to do a Hammer Dracula poster - been wanting to do that for ages. Hope all the love I have for Hammer and Christopher Lee shows."
