Artist statement:
The core of my practice stems from my interest in locating folk art’s place in a globalized world. I seek to create a multi-cultural dialogue that explores the consistencies of visual culture throughout time, beginning with ancient artisans and extending to contemporary artists. I was convinced from an early age growing up in Cuernavaca, Mexico that communities can be sustained through art-making. Like the craftspeople who integrate life into the creation of ceramics and textiles—nothing less than a certain form of magic—I embrace the imperfections of the hand- made—the organic forms and vibrant colors that have the power to remove the individual identity of the artist in favor of a more universal expression of “folk art.”

By uniting the imagery of traditional Mexican folk art with the vernacular of urban contemporary art, I’m trafficking in the nuanced relationship between artistic tradition and global influences, in the process of finding the relationship between community and culture. The lineage of west coast mural work looms large in my practice: art functioning as a symbol of resistance, transforming overlooked spaces into something beautiful - a daily revolution in the form of creating.

Even though his under another lock down in snowy Scotland Alan Campbell is still creating. Alan's newest print is the 4th one in his Haruki Murakami series and is inspired by the book “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle’’. Alan’s interpretive poster is a sublime tribute to the original story, and pairs perfectly with the other three from 2014’s “Kafka on the shore”, 2018’s “Norwegian wood” and 2020’s “After Dark”

Says Alan:
At this point I’ve got a 3 other pieces that I can use as a starting point; I’d like to keep the series connected, so I edited together images of all the pieces next to each other and a file with the images overlaid on top of each other, looking for the commonality between the pieces and where it made sense to break from those.
Alan has a full write on the design process over on his website www.alancampbellart.com/new-blog/2020/11/16/the-wind-up-bird-chronicle

Prints are screen printed by the wizards at VGKids and measure 18 x 24 in the following editions.

2Pac California Love Print by Miles Tsang Release

No comments:

Collectionzz is excited to release its first official 2Pac screenprint, and also its first collaboration with Miles Tsang:

"Tupac Shakur is hip-hop royalty and one of the most important and instantly-recognizable figures in the history of American music (not to mention pop culture at large), so being trusted with crafting a poster to commemorate one of his most famous songs “California Love” was massive and something I took very seriously.
My goal was to portray the icon as larger-than-life, decorating him with visuals from both accompanying music videos. The West Coast is inseparable from the multi-platinum single and the rapper’s lexicon as well, so the poster also features an undulating Los Angeles skyline, distant mountains, palm trees and a desert, all enshrined in clouds of golden dust and crackling tendrils of rhythmic flame with an earthy, sun-baked palette reminiscent of the 90’s aesthetic. I wanted the piece to feel like a positive and powerful representation of the man and the song itself, honoring the influence and legacy of both while making something any fan of the man (and his chosen home) can love and cherish." -Miles Tsang
