Artist statement:
"Death and Nautilus" portrays a species facing destruction at the hands of humans. I chose to portray the Nautilus because it is symbolic of the timelessness of the ocean environment, which has nurtured the Nautilus over the great expanse of time since prehistory. Their ancestors, which look very much like their modern descendants, navigated the oceans of 500 million years ago. But now, humanity is threatening the health of the oceans with overfishing, pollution, and climate change. This threat is symbolized by the human skeleton of Death, in the painting. The skeleton holds the fate of the Nautilus in his hands. We must take action to protect the ocean, and use its resources in a sustainable way, and prevent the loss of the Nautilus and all the other beautiful and fascinating creatures of the seas." - Sandra Yagi
