Some time in the early 1990's a friend turned me onto a band from Canada called the The Tragically Hip. Led by the writing of Gord Downie who was the lead singer, the songs would take you on magical journey some literally some figuratively. The music was always straight up rock n roll, honest and from the heart. Seeing The Hip live was always a moving experience that took the songs to a new level, the music was front and center without a huge pyro show or other distractions. They were a T-shirts and jeans act in an age of teased hair and spandex. Their sound was an improbable roar that left mouths agape. I have seen them so many times over the years I dont even know the number. From huge arena's to a club where Gord and the band was an arm length away. The Hip fans loved the band and the band loved it's fans more than any other.
On May 24 2016 it was revealed that Gord had terminal brain cancer, glioblastoma. The band set out on a 15 city tour of Canada not wanting to call it a farewell tour but Gord wanted to give something back to the fans even though he was fighting for his life. The final show was August 26 2016 in Kingston, ON their hometown.
On October 17, 2017 Gordon Downie passed away from the cancer. Even as the cancer was slowly taking his life Gord continued to make music. His final solo double-album titled Introduce Yerself, it was released posthumously on October 27, 2017. The album contains 23 songs each about someone in his life.
Since his passing Joey Feldman's Canadian fans have been asking for tribute art of some kind. And Joey has created a wonderful piece of art with all the proceeds going to one of Gord's many causes.
