João Ruas Nighthunters II Art Print Release

 

 
Black Dragon Press are very excited to release a brand new art print from one of their favorite working artists, the great João Ruas. ‘Nighthunters II’ is a 14.5" x 18” fine art print printed on a hefty 350gsm museum grade paper and will be available for 72 hours starting this Wednesday 08 September at 5pm UK time. The final edition run will consist of the number of copies sold during this time. This edition will not be reprinted.

Please note that 5% of the profits from this edition will be donated to Projeto Harpia, an NGO that is trying among other things to reintroduce harpy eagles around the threatened Atlantic forests of Brazil. This in top of our ongoing campaign raising money to plant trees with the World Land Trust.

Miles Johnson Countercurrent Art Print Release

 

Black Dragon Press have released a new and much requested art print by Miles Johnston. ‘Countercurrent’ comes in two versions: a 12" x 16" timed edition and a larger 18" x 24" edition limited to 165 copies. Both editions will be signed by the artist.

The timed edition will be available for 48 hours only ending on August 6. The final edition number will be determined by the number of sales during this period. If you purchase both editions they will send you a matching number set.

Kilian Eng The Botanist's Window Art Print Release

 

This week Black Dragon Press are releasing a very special art print by the mighty Kilian Eng. First seen in Wired Magazine, this classic illustration is one of Kilian's most loved and one we are asked about often. And for good reason.

Tula Lotay Salome Opera Poster Release

This week Black Dragon Press will be selling a small consignment of posters from Evil Tender's Opera Print Series. The latest installment sees UK's Tula Lotay tackle Strauss' ‘Salomé’. 

 Chris over at Evil Tender posted this great write-up for it:

"There are a variety of biblical passages as well as scholarly and religious interpretations of Salomé, daughter of Herodias, step-daughter to Herod Antipas. Her story culminates in one single act — after entertaining her step-father and his court with the Dance of the Seven Veils, Salomé confers with her mother and requests that Herod Antipas deliver the head of John the Baptist on a platter as a gift for her performance.

She is a princess, a temptress, manipulator, and destroyer. Art history is rich with visual interpretations of Salomé’s story and as art inspires art (examples below), on the evening of December 9th,1905 in Dresden, Germany, composer Richard Strauss debuted his opera from Hedwig Lachmann’s German translation of Oscar Wilde’s 1891 French play, Salomé.

For her take on Strauss’s Salomé, UK-based comic artist and illustrator Tula Lotay gives us Salomé as Wilde and Strauss intended. She is strong and worthy of her place — sexual, dangerous, and intelligent. It can be said that these qualities are what made reviewers of the 1907 United States premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City say, “the story is repugnant to Anglo-Saxon minds.” Over one hundred years later and audiences are still enthralled and captivated by the pagan dancer Salomé."

Nicolas Delort Nostalghia Movie Poster Release & More

 

 
This week Black Dragon Press are teaming up with MONDO and releasing two new posters paying homage to films by two giants of world cinema: Andrei Tarkovsky's ‘Nostalghia’ and Carl Theodore Dreyer's ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’.

Nico Delort's art direction in their previous Tarokvsky posters was just about perfect, so it seemed like the right thing to do to ask him to turn to illustrating the latest poster in the series: Trakovsky's study of homesickness ‘Nostalghia’. Delort's masterful use of composition and value really shine through in this appropriately beautiful and elegant poster.

‘Nostalghia’ is an 18" x 24" screenprint from an edition of 200.

Zi Xu is a new artist for BDP, but they suspect they will be working with her again and again. Like Dreyer's tragic masterpiece Zi does not pull any punches and delivers a gut-wrenching portrayal of Joan of Arc that gets you right in the feels. At the same time energetic and sobering, this poster delivers.

‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ comes in two editions. A UK variant from an edition of 50, and a US red variant also from an edition of 50.

Miles Johnston Survivor's Guilt Print Release

This week Black Dragon Press are releasing a brand new art print by fan favorite Miles Johnston. Maggie Chiang Amur Leopard Art Print

Black Dragon Press have released the second print in Maggie Chiang's endangered animals series, raising funds to help protect some of the rarest animals in the world and the ecosystems they inhabit.

‘Amur Leopard’ is a 10" x 10" giclée printed on a lovely cotton based paper and comes from an edition of just 75 copies. All proceeds from this sale will be donated to Wildlife Vets International, one of the organizations fighting to protect the few individuals of the species left in the wild.

Victo Ngai Firebird Ballet Poster Release

Black Dragon Press are very excited to release brand new screenprinted posters for Igor Stravinski's ’Firebird’ by the wonderful Victo Ngai as part of their Ballet Classics series art directed by Nicolas Delort.

Becky Cloonan Marketa Lazarová Movie Poster Release

On Friday Black Dragon Press will be releasing new posters by Becky Cloonan for the Czech film epic ‘Marketa Lazarová’, arguably the most convincing film about the Middle Ages ever made.
