Artist statement:
My print for PangeaSeed Foundation, “The Diver”, is a celebration of the beauty of the ocean environment and our inter-connected place in it.

We are oxygen breathing animals, and we live on land. “The Diver” is leaving her natural habitat to enter a watery world, where she can not survive long for lack of air; there she is surrounded by the beauty and danger of the seas. She is also surrounded by the essence of her life on land.

“The Diver” plunges into the beautiful ocean surrounded by myriad air bubbles. Our ocean environment plays a crucial role in the generation of the majority of Earth’s life-sustaining air. We could not live on land and breathe fh air without the world’s oceans. 70% of Earth’s oxygen comes from marine plants in our ocean environments. Heat driven loss of ocean oxygen is one of the leading threats to the delicate world biome posed by Climate Change.

It’s clearly time to act. Please be mindful and give your care to the environment. It’s time to do what you can to become a good steward of the environment. I am always happy to contribute my time and energy to PangeaSeed Foundation! Their efforts in helping to save the oceans, thru art and activism, deserve our support and good energies!

I noted in the credit line of my poster: “After Alfred Roller.” The figure of the diver in my print is influenced by a figure in the work of Vienna Secessionist artist Alfred Roller, the brilliant early 20th Century graphic stylist and inventor of the free, flowing typographical fonts that inspired artist Wes Wilson to create psychedelic lettering in the 1960’s.

No comments:

PangeaSeed and special guest artist Chuck Sperry are pleased to announce the eleventh official print release of our 2015 print suite "Tales from the Deep: Stories, Myths & Monsters" - a fine art print suite to help save our seas. This limited edition will be released Thursday, November 12 at 12pm PST via shop.PangeaSeed.org - limit one print per household.

Month: November
Artist: Chuck Sperry
Title: "Siren"

Siren, 18 x 34, Edition of 150, 7 colors signed & numbered - $100

Siren, 18 x 34, Mirror Foil Edition of 25, 7 colors on mirror foil, signed & numbered - $250

Artist Statement from Chuck Sperry:
My print for PangeaSeed, “Siren”, is meant as warning. My imagination has always been drawn to this mythical being - dangerous and enchanting - whose form is an enthralling warning. The Siren dances and sings like the sea itself, seducing us with her sound, movement and beauty.

Long ago, on November 5, 1965, prominent climate scientists Roger Revelle, Wallace Broecker, Charles Keeling, Harmon Craig, and J Smagorisnky met with US President Lyndon Johnson and warned him of their findings on Climate Change. By 1974, Wallace Broekner had modeled his prediction for the affects of accumulated carbon dioxide on the global surface temperature of the Earth. His predictions remain accurate to this day.

As of 2015 we have experienced a 1 degree centigrade rise in temperature worldwide, as Broekner predicted.

In the last few seasons we have witnessed the California Drought, a record fire season, and the Pacific Blob (a 2-7 degree rise in Pacific Coastal water temperatures).

I am alarmed by the state of our planet’s environment. I grew up with the warnings. The predicted changes are here now.

It’s clearly time to act. Please be mindful and give your care to the environment. It’s time to do what you can to become a good steward of the environment. I am always happy to contribute my time and energy to PangeaSeed! Their efforts in helping to save the seas deserve our support and good energies!

Artist statement:

“Fading, Fleeting, Retreating”, an illustration about the endangered Salt Marsh habitat, focuses on four blue herons and the variety of plant and animal life primarily associated with Salt Marshes. When I began working on this piece I knew that I wanted to illustrate the density of life in the habitat, it’s something that I think is easily overlooked especially in salt marshes, where at first glance look to be just sprawling wetlands. Many of the residents of salt marshes are small and easy to miss and even in the illustration I’ve scattered them throughout the image, some nearly impossible to see without careful examination. I chose to focus in on a small patch of a salt marsh habitat and explore the magic within that space in an effort to highlight the density of life. A lot of the salt marsh life exists underneath the changing tide so I found it crucial to depict both aspects of the habitat.  In much of the work I create I rely heavily on color and motion to form a scene that comes to life. The motion that I employ in this piece is extremely important to it’s meaning as it both exhibits the intense sense of life in the salt marsh habitat but also the ecosystem’s fragility; without care the salt marshes will fade away. I wanted the habitat’s risk of endangerment to come across in the illustration, but not for it to dominate the scene. In the image the blue herons are starting to disappear - the lines of motion morphing with the surroundings. It only takes a single species disappearance to cause an entire habitat to come crashing down, and sometimes it is all too subtle.

The title of the illustration is also something that is very important to this particular piece. While I am working on an illustration I often begin to title it in the early stages and the title develops as the illustration grows. “Fading, Fleeting, Retreating” speaks to many aspects of the salt marsh: more obviously, it is a shifting habitat and as the tide retreats certain species thrive, likewise, when the tide is high others dominate. The physical appearance of a salt marsh can look drastically different depending on the time of day. The title is also about the quality of an endangered habitat: if it is not cared for it will soon just become a fleeting memory, only to exist in those that remember.

Pangea Seed Presents The “Year of Living Dangerously” Series of Prints

No comments:

At PangeaSeed they believe art and activism can spark positive change within individuals and their communities. No matter how large or small the effort, we are all morally responsible to take action and make better decisions for future generations and the natural world.

The “Year of Living Dangerously” is PangeaSeed’s newest twist to the typical print suite. In collaboration with some of today’s most talented and sought-after global artists such as Ken Taylor, Dave Kinsey, Tatiana Suarez, Brad Klausen, Kozyndan, Emek, Rhys Cooper, Frank Kozik, Caia Koopman, Tim Doyle, Greg Craola Simkins, and Jeff Soto, they have created a simple yet beautiful concept: 12 fine art prints focusing on 12 endangered ocean animals. A new print featuring a specific marine species threatened with extinction will be released each month over the course of 2013.

Proceeds raised through the sales of the print suite will help fund PangeaSeed’s 2014 Year of Living Dangerously art tour of Asia. Because Asia is ground zero for the trade and consumption of many endangered species, the 2014 Asian event will reach six major Asian cities extending our core message to critical audiences. The tour with over 50 participating artists and filmmakers aims to educate communities about these endangered species and actions we can take to save these animals from extinction.

With coral reefs, rain forests and global fish stocks estimated to be in full collapse by mid-century, the threat of extinction greatly affects us all. Without healthy oceans a healthy life on Earth becomes a significant challenge and it’s going to take a global movement of awareness, education and action to bring about the sea change necessary to encourage citizens and governments to protect and sustain what cannot protect itself.

For collectors who already know they want the entire suite of 12 prints, they are offering 35 complete, matched numbered sets for sale. Not only will you get all 12 of these amazing prints, they are also including a special print that will only be available to purchasers of this set and that print will be limited to an edition of 40.
All set purchases will be shipped out on a quarterly basis, as the prints get released. - To learn more, please visit PangeaSeed.org
