Brian Ewing Mastodon Columbus Poster Release

Brian Ewing did the poster for the Mastodon concert where he lives in Columbus, Ohio.

Says Brian :

I'm excited to FINALLY show off the poster I was commissioned to design for MASTODON! "Crack The Skye" was always one of my favorite albums by the band. I was fortunate enough to see them back when I lived in NYC. My buddy Josh Bernstein took me to see them when they were on tour with Dethklok back in 2009! And my beard stylist - Bethany, always had photos of her and Brent Hinds in her station and would tell me stories about the band. It just made me love the band even more. I had ALWAYS wanted to work with them but it just seemed like I was never in the right place...until Kyler Sharp and Lady Lazarus were curating this tour - "UNHEAVENLY SKYE". THANKS to those guys for sharing the chance to work with the band!!!

I sent in the idea of a dead astronaut. Something I had been wanting to draw if not just for the Wally Wood piping on the suit. Kyler and Isaac were stoked because it fit perfectly for the band's song "Oblivion". I worked on this in the mornings before and every night after - Sonic Temple. The Deadline was crazy - but most deadlines are.

Isaac at Lady Lazarus did me a solid and sepped this out from 18 colors to 10 colors! 10 colors! It looks so fancy! Most of my work is 3-5 colors. So my brain exploded after seeing the final print. I wish I could work in this many colors all of the time. Plus it's bigger than I usually work!

Brian Ewing Kurt Cobain Heart Shaped Box Print

Brian Ewing has completed a print he started 7 years ago in tribute to Kurt Cobain.

Details from Brian:

I designed this back in 2012 and it was one of the last pieces I completed while living in NYC! Crazy how much time flies. I wanted to go in this direction with my illustration style but then lost my mind and moved to Ohio. From there I decided to go into a different direction with style and started experimenting more with collage and the anatomic style. It was a nice break and it brought fresh eyes to the work I was doing.

The idea behind this was to illustrate my favorite music video of Nirvana's - “Heart Shaped Box” directed by Anton Corbijn I loved that video when it came out. It was dark and set the tone for many shitty bands to try and copy. I probably loved half of those crappy bands too. I remember my buddy Jason Denzer turning me onto "BLEACH" when that came out and by the time "NEVERMIND" came out we were on the phone with each other frantically trying to tape the world premier of Smells Like Teen Spirit off the radio. What is "internet"?

I haven’t really looked at this piece since then. But it’s weird that it’s coming full circle as to where I want to take my illustration style once more. Because of my apprenticing to tattoo I’ve begun to love drawing again.

The art was intended to be a 13 color art print but never got made. Instead I opted to do just a 2 color print.

Brian Ewing Moving Sale

Brian Ewing has to move in a few weeks so he is having a MOVING SALE!!!

Why the move?
After 6 years of living in the same apartment we decided it was time for an upgrade. And in those 6 years I’ve done a TON of posters and now have some stock I need to find new homes for because I not so secretly HATE MOVING!

Brian Ewing Megadeath Poster

 Brian Ewing crossed one off the bucket list recently, here's how it went down.

Last month I got hit up by Megadeth and their management to help celebrate their 35 years of being a band. In one of our conversations they asked which albums I liked. There are quite a few. But right away I went with "So Far So Good...So What!" because I can still remember the day it came out. My buddy Jason Denzer and I walked all the way (5 miles) to Mainstream Records in Milwaukee, WI - where we grew up. CDs had just become popular. It was a few days after our birthdays. We had our paper route and birthday money burning gigantic holes in our pockets. I remember seeing posters and a display of this dystopian Vic Rattlehead in fatigues with a futuristic gun (a toy uzi and some pipes spray painted black) and the Earth in the background. "Take my money..." my subconscious said and I bought the cassette. CDs were $25 - $30 back then. Tapes were under $10. Even though I was a kid I knew how to stretch a dollar. "Peace Sells" and SFSGSW were major influences on me and my youth! -Brian

Foo Fighters Cincinnati Print By Brian Ewing Release

Brian Ewing was commissioned by Foo Fighters to design a poster for their Cincinnati show last week. He had a ton of fun working with them again. This is the THIRD time working with the band and he couldn't be more proud!!! The band and management have been very cool with Brian and very encouraging as far as trying new things. This time around Brian wanted to take all of the stuff he loves about Mike Hinge's work from the 70's and run it through his own filter.

Brian Ewing Queens of the Stone Age Columbus Poster

Brian Ewing was commissioned to design a poster for the current Queens of the Stone Age - Villains tour. He took a chance on this one and went in a different direction (for him at least) and cultivated his love of John Romita Sr and the romance comic book covers of the 60's and 70's. So bad it's good - as the kids say.


Brian talks concept:

"Once the band and management approved of the sketch and direction I called upon local printer Upright Press to see if they wanted to try an experiment with me. I wanted to go the opposite direction of the anatomical style I like to do and see if I designed a poster to look like an old comic book cover if he (Jess) could help make it look like the way comic books used to be printed - 4 color process. Basically breaking the artwork down to CMYK and printing them as dots. We tried to mimic that style of printing and hoped there would be some mis-registration to help further it looking like a vintage comic book. I can say "vintage" now - I'm old. I'm only a few years away from getting that senior discount! Catch me at Denny's for the early bird specials.

Brian Ewing The Kiss Print

Since it's the 4th and since Brian Ewing is a HUGE Star Wars dork. He is doing a pre-order for his new art print. Because it's all "pre" and stuff it will take him a few days longer to ship everything out. So he is pricing this at a rad "pre" price (aka pre-tty rad price).

Last month Brian Ewing was commissioned by his homies Travis and Jenny Lykins to design a wedding poster for them. And they gave him their blessing to rework the design to release as an art print for May 4th!

Brian doesn’t normally have more than one figure in a composition. It’s a lot more work if he does. But I think this turned out great on its own without the photo overlay. For the past few years he's been working half the size he normally does. Most of his originals are now 8.5 x 11 This saves him a ton of time and keeps him from adding a ton of detail that isn’t necessary.

Brian ended up drawing and inking more of the anatomy than what would make the final print. He does that in case he fudged something up and got his dimensions wrong or he wants to repurpose the artwork later and doesn’t want to get off his lazy ass and draw more of it years later. But the major reason was that Travis & Jenny purchased the original art along with commissioning him to do the poster. So he wanted it to be special and have bonus material!!!

Brian Ewing blink 182 Mansfield Poster

So stoked to FINALLY show this off!!! I was commissioned by Blink-182 to be a part of the current tour. I had been trying for a while now to do a poster for this band so I’m doing the happy dance over here.

I’m also happy because I’m starting to feel the need to move forward with a style that I have been exploring for the past couple of years. So it’s nice to not be drawing a skull for once and to show people I can actually draw things - like people with no skin!!!

If you look closely at the collage you’ll see a million references to the band. And myself of course.

Galerie F were delighted to get regular collaborator Brian Ewing in to create a poster in their long running film series with Logan Theatre. The theater showed Night of the Living Dead all last weekend for Halloween and they made a bunch of prints for it.

Greetings From Chicago
Mural artist, Victor Ving, and photographer, Lisa Beggs, are on a cross-country road trip in an RV creating interactive murals that will become future landmarks. The ‘Greetings From’ tour seeks to create public art that will capture the pride of local residents for their hometowns and spark the interest of visitors and tourists. The two artists will travel to select cities throughout the United States for at least a year painting murals inspired by vintage large-letter postcards. The Greetings From Chicago mural was the first mural created on the Greetings Tour in May 2015.

Galerie F are happy to announce the release of the remaining prints from Chicago Comic Entertainment Expo. They have over ten stunning new prints and toys to share with you on Monday May 11th at 2PM CDT. Here's a full rundown of what they will have to offer...

First! Three new stencil art pieces transformed into silkscreen prints from EPYON5. FugScreens knocked the printing out of the park with the transparencies and layering, while Epyon as always creates an impressive homage to propaganda in the form of pop culture patronage. Here are the specifics...

His vintage style and interested use of highlights really make these designs pop.

Then they have the talented Matthew Johnson [SeventhInk]. They first started working with Johnson from our Loaded Guns exhibition, and have since been drawn to his graphic design skills. Each print they've carried from him is different in its own way, but shows a great understanding of perspective. Here we have some video game inspired prints to drop Monday!

The second release with Dan Mumford will not disappoint - Zissou reached out to Mumford with his love for Judge Dredd, and was met with the same passion! Mumford was excited to take on this concept and created a piece that utilized his intense atmospheric landscapes to express the mortality that is the story of Judge Dredd and Judge Death.

Next up is an unexpected film poster designed by Brian Ewing that Galerie F have been hanging on to for a bit. Ewing had created this poster for a screening at the Logan Theatre, but was not able to finalize the design before the screen date. They loved the design so much, how much of a deviation it is from the work they currently have in from Ewing, that they had to print it.

Making IT Art Documentary with Brian Ewing & Others

“MAKING IT” is an Art Documentary about the daily struggles of making a living, staying creative, and making it all up as they go along. The Documentary features three Illustrators, Andrew Bawidamann, Eric Fortune, and Brian Ewing. They all worked very hard to bring some honesty and levity to discussing their educations and careers in commercial art. The film explores the life and career of a commercial artist through the eyes of students, teachers and professional artists you're probably familiar with.

It's finally done and was released the other day via itunes, xbox, Amazon, Google Play and some other VOD companies I never heard of.
