Jim Rugg has new project. It's a blacklight comic book and series of blacklight screen prints.

The project is for a comic book called Octobriana 1976. It's set in the 70s because that's when Jim thinks of blacklight posters. The comic is being printed with fluorescent inks and will be a very unique piece of printed matter. It's about an underground Russian superhero (semi-based on a true story).

 If you know anyone that's into weird comics, unique printed matter, 70s counter culture, or superwomen this is what you want to check out and support.

The Monster Atlas is a map-based, funny, informative and occasionally spine-tingling guide to monsters and their literal place in the world.

It includes nearly 400 famous and not-so-famous creatures featured in myth and legend, cryptozoology, literature and cinema!

Much like a typical atlas, readers can flip through the pages detailing geographic areas. Only in this version, monster icons are displayed on the various maps based on their reported sightings and/or narrative settings. Written paragraphs and larger, detailed images go into detail about the history of each particular beast.

It is their intention to inform and entertain young and old alike. This project will help to provide a better understanding of these incredible creations (some of these stories have been relayed between people for centuries), as well as giving the owner a sharper and clearer sense of geography.

This particular volume is the first in a proposed series. It will focus on monsters in the Western Hemisphere (that's North America, Central America and South America, folks!).

And should you guys out there like it and help make it a success, then they'll be able to create future editions that will chronicle more creatures in other parts of the world.

Besides the incredible imagery on display, the book will also provide pages of information, statistics and amusing facts on the monsters featured.

Biographies
Co-author and illustrator Greg Hyland has had the idea for the Monster Atlas for decades, but only seriously started working on it in 2014. He's best know for his comic book, and now on-line comic, Lethargic Lad, but has also worked as an illustrator and storyboard artist for the LEGO Group where he storyboarded countless TV commercials, did preliminary design on some LEGO Star Wars sets, and drawing the comics that came with LEGO Batman sets. He has also illustrated several card games for Steve Jackson Games including Munchkin Fu, Burn In Hell, Ninja Burger, and Munchkin Zombies Artist's Edition.

Co-author Glenn Kay has been studying monsters for decades. He has authored multiple books on film (including Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide from Chicago Review Press) and has reviewed movies in print, on TV and radio, as well as for various online outlets. Glenn has also provided narration and character voices in the entertainment industry. Except for an uncredited bit on a 2005 Frontline special on PBS, they have been for shows that you probably haven't seen unless you live in Canada (narration on programs like Killer Comebacks, Design Interns and Women on Top). Still, his work was pretty darn compelling. He is currently the President of the San Diego Film Critics Society. In between his duties for this organization, he spends his time researching monsters and warning others about their very real existence.

Rob Loukotka I Spy Gold ACME Poster Kickstarter Project

Pretty cool news a while back, Kickstarter had invited Rob Loukotka to do a 'remix' of his huge ACME poster for an upcoming celebration.

This week Kickstarter is celebrating their 8th year and $3B in projects by featuring his designs as part of their 'Kickstarter Gold' campaign. In 2012 you might remember his 'ACME Corporation' poster raised $105,000 there.

Anyway, Rob illustrated the poster with a retro 'I Spy' vibe and Kickstarter effectively launched his company and career back then.

Russ Moore Sacred Realms 3 Print Set Kickstarter Project

Russ Moore is launching his very first Kickstarter and it involves his love of video games.

From the Kickstarter page-

“Like many of us, I grew up playing video games. From the Atari to the NES and on and on. And these old-school games, even with their simplified graphics, helped transport us into their imaginary worlds- a place of high adventure and pure escapism. This print series pays tribute to these digital environments that you, me, and many millions more visited daily, after school, on the weekends, and late into the night.

This print series is a tribute to those places. I’ve illustrated three silk-screen prints, and with your pledges, I hope to make this edition of them a reality!”

Each image will be a hand-printed serigraph (screen-print) measuring 18×24 inches, signed and numbered by Russ in a limited printing. The edition sizes on the standard prints will be determined by the response to the project!

OUR GOAL
We're dedicated to building an entirely custom classic pinball arcade art installation starting with five mechanically restored vintage 1970s pinball machines featuring art packages reimagined by some of the most influential and respected counter pop culture artists working in the game today.  We aim to recreate the aura of those public game rooms that ruled the underground of yesteryear, the analog era, retrofit with modern styles relevant to the minds of a new generation.  We're here to bring back the arcade.
We'll first open to the public at the FIFTY24SF Gallery in San Francisco, CA, USA in late Summer/early Fall of 2014, and from there we'll either travel the exhibit to other associated galleries around the world, or choose to scale up to a larger venue in SF with more artists, building upon our success there.

WHY PINBALL?
Because every modern day creature comfort has an analog electro-mechanical ancestor, and in terms of the video game, pinball is that, the grandfather clock of the arcade, the first machine that ever kept score for you. Before pixels were being pumped in and fired through your eyeballs directly on into your brains by tvs and pc monitors, swinging flippers at a silver ball trapped in a world behind a sheet of glass was as good as gaming got. High technology, 1975, never forget. Know your roots.

With this respect for history in our hearts, we choose to use pinball as our medium, our canvas, an homage in honor.

Jay Ryan Skate or Die Movie Poster for Kickstarter Project

Jay Ryan has created a rad new poster to help Skate or Die with their movie funding Kickstarter project. More than 70 gangs with some 68,000 members operate in the city of Chicago. Their toll on the the city is severe, carving parts of the South and West sides into practical war zones. As of this writing, there have been 246 homicides so far in 2012, many of the victims were kids and the vast majority were gang related. For youths trying to escape, the routes are clogged with violence. But a growing number have found in skateboarding a vehicle, literal and figurative, to escape the perils of gang life. Leo Castillo was one such youth.
“Skate or Die”, an overused catchphrase dating back to the origins of skate culture, strikes at a very real threat to kids like Leo. For them, it's literal.

While this film tells the story of one kid attempting to overcome incredible odds, it is also a film about a larger movement - the rise of inner-city skateboarding.
Once the province of West Coast surfers, followed by their admirers in suburbs around the country, skating has now gained a foothold in some of the world's most violent and impoverished neighborhoods. 

The money raised will be used to hire an editor to take four years of footage, or well over 100 hours, and cut it down into an 80 minute draft of the final film. Any money we raise OVER our target will go towards finishing costs like color correction, music composition, and mastering.

 Art+Cause just launched a pre-sale campaign in Kickstarter to fund the production of a print by R.Black, known for a recent Occupy Poster http://rblack.org/ and more than 10 years of poster art. The Launch of Chicago's GALERIE F Kickstarter Fund Raising Program

Zissou Tasseff-Elenkoff is the founder and owner of FugScreens Studios, partner and initiating company behind Galerie F. Operating a fully functional commercial printmaking studio and having been raised in Paris and London, Zissou seeks to further join a Chicago art community with the international art world. He sees Galerie F as a unique opportunity to present accessible, exciting and varied work to both a local and international audience.

Their mission is as follows:
Opening July 2012, Galerie F presents itself to the city of Chicago as the first open-door gallery space. Fully functional six days of the week, all day long, with no appointments required. We seek to contextualize printmaking and street art in the contemporary art scene while promoting local and international artists. Our community, and our city, are essential to our mission.

Come in, browse through our print archives, check out our latest exhibitions, or sign up for screen printing classes. Offering an extensive and affordable collection of gig posters, art posters, and other collectibles for your browsing pleasure.

The funds you donate will directly support the space’s opening and each dollar will go to the construction and preparation of our Logan Square location.
