Those of you in Austin next week for SXSW are in for yet another special treat. SXSW Comedy's official poster is here, and it's amazing - designed by Austin artist Todd Slater, the image is symbolic and striking, full of rainbow hues and the dizzying attention to detail that punctuates the artist's work.
On his inspiration behind the design, which is bordered by SXSW Comedy's 2013 lineup, Slater says:
As of late my work has featured illustrations of animals coded in metaphors relating to human behavior. My thought here was to compare a comedian to a poison dart frog. I imagine comedians to be shooting a kind of verbal poison dart with their words. A typical night in Austin during SXSW could be compared to a rainforest filled with the nocturnal choir of these multicolored frogs.
A limited edition of 100 signed and numbered 18x24 screenprints will be available for sale during the festival, while supplies last, for $20 at the merch tables at the Austin Convention Center and at Esther's Follies and The North Door - and a very limited edition of gold ink prints has been created exclusively for SXSW Comedy performers. Slater will also have prints available online after the festival.

I've been drawing the backs of those frogs for years but from my extensive researched experience no two are ever the same.
