"A Beautiful Fucking Experience,” is a feature length documentary that celebrates music, in particular the live music experience, as told through the journey of The Flaming Lips on their Guiness world record breaking 24 hour tour through the Mississippi Delta.
The film was spawned from a celebratory paradigm. MTV tapped The Flaming Lips to headline their OMA award show which took place between June 27-28, 2012. The unconventional award show recognizes unique achievements in the online cultural zeitgeist. Unlike traditional award shows, the OMA’s focus more on the conceptualization of crafting an uncanny live experience than a scripted, star studded two hour televised award show. Seen only online, the show is more about the fans and viewers than ratings and egos.
The 24 hour tour consisted of playing eight live shows in eight cities throughout the Mississippi Delta. The tour started in Memphis, Tennessee traveled to Clarksdale, Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi, Jackson, Mississippi, Hattisburg, Mississippi, Biloxi, Mississippi, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and ended in New Orleans, Louisiana. Along the road The Lips joined forces with a myriad of collaborators including Jackson Browne, Grace Potter, Gary Clark Jr, Neon Trees, Hunter Hayes, Neon Indian, New Fumes and many others.
Using Wayne Coyne as the lead narrator, the film captures perspectives from the musicians, the collaborators, the creators of the show, the fans which followed the entire 24 hour journey and the locals of the small towns to weave together a story full of heart, soul and love in relation to music. It took all of those people joining together to create “A Beautiful Fucking Experience.” This is their story. They want it to be your story as well.
