Species info:
Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, housing tens of thousands of marine species. About one-third of all marine fish species live part of their lives on coral reefs. Corals are the source of new drugs to treat diseases like cancer and HIV.
Second only to rainforests in biodiversity of species, coral reefs are imperiled throughout the world due to destructive human impact such as ocean acidification, overfishing, coastal development and pollution.
A recent report estimated that 75 percent of remaining coral reefs are currently threatened, and many have already been lost. Even some of the most remote and pristine reefs are losing species at alarming rates.
