Mark Dean Veca Major Work Show in San Francisco Opening Friday & New Prints

This is how big the original painting is

In celebration of the Major Work exhibition at Chandran Gallery, San Francisco, two new prints have been published by Mark Dean Veca Studio.

Apprentice features the painting from Major Work depicting Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice in Disney's 1940 psychedelic animated masterpiece, Fantasia.

Hatter portrays The Mad Hatter from Disney's 1951 cartoon classic, Alice in Wonderland, based on Lewis Carroll's surreal 1865 novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Both were inspired by vintage Blotter Art, the graphic embellishment of an LSD delivery system that has become a distinct category of printmaking in and of itself.

The artists are akin for their amplified voices and commentaries that are often formed through their highly individualistic choices in lifestyle and/or professional trajectories. In keeping with the theme, the exhibition comprises of new paintings created on a grand scale, giving an enveloping experience of each artist’s work.

The exhibition is on view December 11, 2015 - January 15, 2016, with an opening reception on Friday, December 11 between 7 - 9:30pm.

Glenn Barr Presents Lyric 3 Show At Inner State Gallery

Friday night Inner State Gallery hosted the opening of Lyric 3 a musically themed group exhibition curated by legendary Detroit artist Glenn Barr. Gathering over 40 artists from around the globe, Barr had one simple request: Each piece of art must be 12 x 12 inches, paying homage to the timeless beauty that can fit on the cover of a vinyl record.

“Music and its lyrics can always stimulate our emotions, as well as leave us contemplating a visual narrative. Artists have used lyrics as inspiration and as a muse in their work to express an idea or a phrase for eons. History has shown us that they have created some of the greatest works in the world when guided by a melody and its words. This exhibition will illuminate the artist’s personal transcription from a song lyric to canvas,” Barr said from his Corktown studio.

Glenn Barr Pit of the Id Solo Exhibition at Cotton Candy Machine

On the evening of July 17th, The Cotton Candy Machine are welcoming back the Detroit-based master painter, Glenn Barr for his second solo show, "Pit of the Id"! It has been almost three years since Glenn’s first solo show with them, which opened in September 2012, and they are eager to have his work on their walls again. This new show, too, will spotlight a variety of Glenn’s smaller works, although they can promise at least one large centerpiece to enthrall and mesmerize his many fans. While Glenn’s work is always very clearly his own, due in part to his hazy color palette and the almost seductive nature of his often isolated figures, he manages to explore many realms of imagery without ever leaving the universe he has created for himself. For this show, Glenn invites us to view his playful side through some re-imaginings of beloved characters like Judy Jetson and Wilma Flintstone. Painted in his softly gritty style, these ladies appear in moments of solitude, skin exposed and peering out through magnetic eyes. Simply the choice to pull inspiration from these particular retro vixens feels entirely in line with Glenn’s vision. Like many of the elements in his work, they are relics of America’s not-too-distant past; a vision of feminine beauty that spans all the way from the stones of Bedrock to the depths of outer space.

Jeff Soto Nightgardens Solo Show

KP Projects/MKG is proud to present Nightgardens, the latest exhibition by Jeff Soto.

In his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2006, Jeff Soto’s Nightgardens is a continued exploration into contemporary landscape painting coupled with the idea of myth and the mysterious. The imagery created does not exist in our world yet references real life dilemmas, conflicts and journeys into the unknown.

Both familiar and otherworldly images dot alien-like terrain where creatures of the night such as owls, cats and wolves make appearances, yet are not always what they seem. Ancient Yeti-like creatures called ‘Seekers’ - either from the distant future or forgotten past - meander through purple-blue sunsets and moss covered hills while traversing past urban civilization in the form of geometric architecture, telephone poles, palm trees, and toys. Soto invites us into an imaginary world of magic, monsters and daydreams that alludes to a need for transcendence in the modern world.

“Most of my visuals come from free writing and drawing, dreams, and other Surrealist techniques. I have a long-standing love of landscape painting and have been working it into my compositions for decades. Nature is one of my biggest inspirations, especially the purple-blue hills and mountains of Southern California. The compositions can be busy and chaotic because that is how my life and thoughts are. I enjoy playful randomness well as traditional illustrative rendering. Graffiti was and continues to be a factor in my work.” – Jeff Soto

Yumiko Kayukawa Appetite Print Release

Yumiko Kayukawa returns to 1xRUN on Wednesday with a new print titled Appetite plus 5 original paintings will be on sale as well.

Yumiko Kayukawa grew up in the small town of Naie in Hokkaido, Japan. In these pristine, natural surroundings, she found her love of animals and nature which later became an important theme of her work. As she grew up, Yumiko drew inspirations from American pop culture such as Rock & Roll, film and fashion. These influences are fused with modern and traditional Japanese motifs to create her unique style.

"This piece was presented for a show “Rock You In a Tatami Room” in 2011. It wasn’t a theme show, so I created pieces with just represented what I was feeling at the time.

As I love animals and wildlife, how they kill to survive is a passionate subject for me. Even a beautiful crane fights to live. It’s beautiful to me, just like they are dancing." - Yumiko Kayukawa

Peter Adamyan Trailer Park Jesus & Mary Porcelain Plates & Paintings

This just might be one of the funniest releases ever from 1xRUN as Peter Adamyan delivers Trailer Park Jesus & Mary Porcelain Plates plus the original paintings frames with real used tires.

"The original piece was a look at how religion changes the images of their deities to fit new followers and I wanted to make a Jesus and Mary that would fit into the poor right wing whites in this country, or at least the stereotype of what that means. To keep with that theme I thought it would be great to print the images on a kitch item which you might find decorating the homes of the trailer park residents.

My latest body of work "Salvation Mini Mart" is an exploration of how religion is a tool to market ideas and the personal agendas of politicians, dictators and religious leaders throughout the centuries. It's also about what America holds near and dear to their hearts, capitalism and mass consumption. How the right wing which acts like they have a direct lineage to Jesus ignore the fact that their free market ideals are in direct contrast to Jesus's teachings. 

These pieces were from my solo show last year at lOAKal Gallery in Oakland, called Salvation Mini Mart. The show had to do with how religion changes over time and how Christianity in particular can change in a nation like the US which is so consumer driven.

The original pieces were done with oil on a wood panel, each has their own custom frame made from a whole car tire. The plates are printed in a Chinese factory like most goods in the US." - Peter Adamyan

Persue Bunny Kitty Laser Cut Out Art Release

Persue brings the Bunny Kitty back in 4 different colors to 1xRUN today with a new release but this time they are laser cut outs on wood plus 8 new original paintings as well.

"Bunny Kitty and her universe were created over 10 years ago. I wanted to create an icon and story that would reach a larger demographic than my graffiti art might. So I invented a world and cast of characters that interact with Bunny Kitty on her adventures in the post apocalypse story. In this series characters that have yet to be introduced are doing so through these one off hand painted paintings. Bunny Kitty’s crush Dee Dee Meow the guitarist for the Slugganauts is being introduced as well as the Siamese twin back up singers Michelle Michelle.

The execution came about after my trip to Pow Wow Hawaii event. I depicted the cast of characters in a floating serine Rainbow Bridge in collaboration with my friend Slick. I wanted to keep that style in these pieces. The characters are depicted in a dream state." - Persue

Look of The Weird Golden Print & Original Artwork

"This print is part of a cycle of six canvases I painted for a show in Mexico City. The cycle of six canvases is called: "... It was all green instead", and this is the canvas "Golden". Two of the six canvases are gone but the rest is still for sale as the original "Golden" canvas still is.

I had an idea about a post-apocalyptic setting in a fake jungle in an adventure-park with a native couple who is praying to a golden predator drone which is fallen from the sky." - Look

Taylor White Homeroom Print & Original Paintings Release Details

Taylor White has a new print release Monday from 1xRUN titled Homeroom along with some original paintings.

"This piece was an experimental marriage of digital and analogue techniques. It was reborn from a pile of old sketches I had made two years ago during preparations for my ‘Base Nature’ solo show in Melbourne, but it never saw the light of day. Good thing, too, as I was able to resurrect it and make it even better than it would have been had it been painted two years ago. I have the original gouache painting available.

This piece had originally been considered as part of my solo exhibition ‘Base Nature,’ held a couple of years ago when I lived in Melbourne. At the time the schoolboy theme didn’t quite mesh with the motifs that were coming out during the process of making that body of work, so I scrapped the idea. However, I’ve always thought that image to be quite a powerful and succinct representation of how I always felt about being in school, so it was always in the back of my mind as something to re-explore." - Taylor White

Tristan Eaton Victory is Ours Mural Painting

This past Thursday Tristan Eaton unveiled a massive mural that was commissioned by Doner Advertising Agency with the help of Library Street Collective for the Doner office in Southfield, Michigan. This incredible body of work is a staggering 70 feet long and 8 feet high on wood panel and Tristan with the help of his friend fellow artist Richard Henderson knocked it out in only a week. Using mostly spray paint Tristan achieved the goal of updating the interior of the 3rd floor office space that Kevin Skinner of Doner had requested. Doner also gave out Munny's and Dunny's to it's employees that Tristan was more than happy to draw on for them.

Some of you may or may not have heard what what happened at Tara McPherson's Cotton Candy Machine Gallery show for Amar Stewart earlier this month. 5 scumbags stole 3 paintings and 1 was recovered. Sean Leonard co-owner, Tara's husband and all around nice guy ended up chasing one of the bastards up and down the street and got 1 painting back.

But still 2 remain uncovered and 4 of the dickheads are still out there in New York and they need your help finding them.

" I created this painting while working on a custom vinyl NUGGLIFE set commission for a collector. This project helps you view the characters in a 3D world. But I had to illustrate this world in order to put the story together. So by producing a painting in a hyper animation style I can let peoples imagination have something to feed of off. Now you can start to see the story viewed in my head piece by piece. This is my first print ever to be released.
