JC Richard & Justin Santora at Gallery 1988 The Sound of a New World Being Born

No comments:

Justin Santora has emerged from his little cave to spread the word about The Sound of a New World Being Born: Justin Santora and JC Richard, which opens this Friday, March 1st at Gallery 1988 Melrose (7020 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038). Justin has produced several new paintings and screen prints, including his first ever screen prints on wood (there will be limited maple wood variants of many of his prints in this show). JC Richard has been busy as ever, churning out a whole slough of new prints, some originals, and maybe even a few more surprises.

The show will be up from March 1st-March 23rd, 2013. The opening reception is this Friday, March 1st from 7PM-10PM. Both JC Richard and Justin will be at the reception. If you live in the LA area, they'd love to see you! The show will also be on Gallery 1988's website the day after the show, and all work will be available for purchase online.

Don't miss the opening of Gallery1988's 2nd Annual Old School Video game Art Show, now dubbed Level 2, TONIGHT (Friday, Oct. 26). This exhibit will feature artwork from almost 75 artists, all inspired by video games of yesteryear.

The opening reception will take place from 7-10pm at Gallery1988 Venice,
and the show will run through November 24th.

Darin Shock did something a little different for his contribution to Gallery 1988's "Old School Video Game: Level 2" exhibit. Working exclusively on a computer for years he felt the need to get his hands dirty in order to salvage a little sanity.  Darin submitted two 3 dimensional sculptures entitled "Little Mac & Doc" and "King Hippo" respectively. They are both 20 x 24" mixed media relief type sculptures and both will be available at the opening tonight for $500 a piece
Here is Darin talking about how he created the pieces
After working exclusively on a computer for years I reached the point where I HAD to slap on the old apron and actually make something with my hands. I haven't ventured into the 3rd dimension since college and found it to be very refreshing and a nice change of pace. I quickly learned that this is a beginning of a new aspect of State of Shock Studios and will be proud to present similar pieces in the future in addition to the usual poster & design work.

When I was asked to contribute to Gallery 1988's
Old School Video Game show I knew I wanted to focus on Nintendo's Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. When this game came out in 1987 it quickly became a favorite. I was not only enthralled with the playability of the game but was also fascinated with all of the unique characters. I've always had an interest in (and therefore am influenced by) all things cartoonish and these boxers each presented something exciting to me visually. I didn't own this game as a kid and had to pretend to tolerate the nerd down the street to have access...apparently it was worth it. Many moons later I do not consider myself a gamer but have very fond connections to the games of my childhood. Punch-Out and Baseball Stars are easily my favorite games of all time and it was great to be able to honor one of them.

Darin Shock's Huff'n Doback Poster from Step Brothers Gallery Show

No comments:

Darin Shock was once again in another Gallery1988 Show. This time it was for the G1988's tribute to the cult favorite film Step Brothers, that opened this past Friday night in Santa Monica. Entitled "Huff'n Doback", it's an 18x24", 4 color screen print and a limited edition of 50.

Darin on how he created the poster: There were so many highs in this film that deserved my focus but (no matter how obvious) I had to depict Huff 'n Doback and their music video for "Boats 'n Hoes." Pure genius. Middle aged white guys rapping like they're 2 Live Crew meets N.W.A. meets Wreckx N Effect meets 3rd Bass...genius. "The Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria...I'll do you in the bottom while you're drinkin' sangria!"

Details from Gallery 1988:
Over a year in the making, Gallery1988 is bringing its most popular annual show, and the subject of the recent Titan Publishing book of the same name, Crazy 4 Cult, to New York City! There are over 200 artists in this show, and in excess of 300 pieces are hanging on the walls of our temporary space in the Meat Packing District, on Gansevoort, right at the end of the Highline. The epic exhibition opens tomorrow night, Thursday, August 9th, from 6-9 PM with an opening reception, where many of the artists will be in attendance. Paintings, prints, sculptures and one-of-a-kind plush will first be available at the venue, as there will be no preview for this show.

This is an exhibit you do not want to miss. We would love to meet as many East Coast G1988 aficionados as possible, so swing on by and see the artwork live and in person for the first time outside of California.

This show will run through September 1st, with gallery hours of 11-6 PM, and we are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Gallery 1988 will be opening their brand new show at G1988 (Venice) tonight, with an opening reception from 7-10 PM, and we hear that all three artists will be in attendance! New prints from Jay Shaw, Joshua Budich and Jeff Boyes will be on display and available, and the work is outstanding. I think it’s going to blow you guys away, even if you have high expectations. The image above is from Jeff Boyes, and here are two other previews…

Jeff Boyes on the Show:
I will have 7 prints in the show.  5 of those are brand new, 1 of them is a Variant of an older print and 1 is a set of A/P's I've been saving for a while. I am going to be at the opening, so if you do live in the area, come on by and say hi!

For those who don't live anywhere near Venice Beach, the prints will be available online through Gallery 1988.  I'm not sure the exact time they will go up on the site, but my guess would be August 3rd.

I am incredibly excited to finally release these new prints.  Hope you like the first preview of my "Wolfmobile" print.

Todd Slater Seeing Red Alfred Hitchcock Print On Sale

No comments:
 From Todd:

24 x 18 – 3 color silkscreen – S/N edition of 150 (30 with gold inks) – This print was commissioned for Venice’s Gallery 1988 “Suspense & Gallows Humor: A Tribute to Alfred Hitchcock” show in 2012.  I wanted to combine the three major elements that stand out most to me in Hitchcock films: birds, suspense and voyeurism.  A little known piece of information about Hitchcock is that he himself was a voyeur, so I wanted to include his image in the print as well.
