As artist and founder of the SSUR clothing line (and its sub-brands Rebel Ape and Caviar Cartel), Russ Karablin has become a prominent figure in both the street wear and contemporary art scenes. The strong influence of New York City, from its hip hop culture to its street art, is prevalent within SSURs imagery. Equally as influential to his designs is Russ Karablin’s Russian background. He combines pop culture memorabilia with war propaganda, meshing past and present iconography, to create work concerned with sex, politics, and protest. About SSUR:
Ruslan Karablin emerged from the downtown New York art scene during the late ‘80’s. Fueled by the popuality of his paintings, most notably his “Rebel Ape” icon, he was able to expand his art practice to the production of the SSUR clothing lines.
