Sunday 17 January 10 2010 sees the debut of the influential and cult graphic designer, Natty Brooker open at Glasgow’s Mono venue in King’s Court.
British artist Natty Brooker, best known for his collaboration with legendary bands Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, is debuting his life’s work in Glasgow’s art and music hub, Mono (home to the legendary Monorail Records and many an excellent band’s venue of choice). Sons and Daughters are playing there on NYE.
Brooker was responsible for much of the Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized aesthetic. He also introduced founding members Pete Kember and Jason Pierce (aka Sonic Boom and Jason Spaceman) to blues and gospel, played drums on the first Spacemen 3 album, Sound of Confusion, and also appeared on the classic demos release Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To.
This show kick-starts a series of shows in notable artistic cities across the globe, including New York, London and Berlin, where Brooker’s work will be seen in its entirety for the first time in 20 years.
It was Natty’s ‘Devil and Angel’ design that adorned the first Spiritualized album cover Laser Guided Melodies, and it was his endlessly recurring threes from on the above feature image that graced the last Spacemen 3 album, Recurring. His graphic design was pivotal in the image of two of the most influential British ‘indie’ acts, for want of a better term, of the last two decades.
Prints of all the works will be available as signed and numbered set of 14 for £1,200 and individual signed and numbered prints are available starting at £150. Natty Brooker’’s work is incredible and well worth checking out. Add to this a live set from Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite and a DJ set from Will Carruthers of Spacemen 3 and The Brian Jonestown Masscare and you’re in for a treat to say the least. All topped off by up-and-coming Glasgow noise-pop band St Deluxe and a DJ set from Rev-ola Records and PoppyDisc Records founder, Joe Foster. Get a ticket and hope to see you there.
