Billy Perkins Rock Poster Art Show

No comments:

Billy Perkins is having his first solo show in 8 years opens in Houston this Saturday! This one is a really big deal to him also.

I'll let Billy tell you why it's so important:
Why is it such a big deal? First, its going to be HUGE. Spring Street Gallery is an enormous warehouse. It's a retrospective show, and therefore features MANY prints that I pulled from the personal vaults - lots of rarities and popular prints that have been sold out for years, and EVERYTHING is for sale. Some of these are literally my last copies that I have to sell.

The size of the space allows us to showcase 10' tall reproductions of some of my Perkins '77 images (NFS). These require a large space to be displayed, and haven't been seen since they graced the store windows of John Varvatos stores. It's unlikely they'll be seen again anytime soon.

It's also only my second-ever solo show - the last one was in 2008, so lots of new work has been done since then. After this show, many prints will no longer be available. If there's something specific you're interested in, contact Ann Brooks at Black Swan Screen Printing - (713) 863-0200.
Limited edition prints of this show poster will also be available. It's 20x30, and screen printed by hand at Black Swan Screen Printing.

Artist Reception: Saturday, May 7 at 6 PM – 9 PM
Spring Street Studios
1824 Spring Street

Black Caesar Movie Poster by Billy Perkins Release Details from Odd City World Premiere Exclusive

No comments:

Odd City Entertainment, in partnership with MGM Studios, reveals limited edition Billy Perkins print for the 1973 blaxploitation classic Black Caesar.

Considered by some to be Fred Williamson’s most iconic role, Black Caesar is a film that transcends categories. In 2009, Empire Magazine named it one of twenty best Gangster Movies you’ve never seen (probably). Blaxploitation gangster film about revenge, with a score by James Brown, his first score for film.

ODD CITY is proud to announce they will be releasing a BLACK CAESAR limited edition print by artist BILLY PERKINS at the Austin Film Society FROM DUSK TIL DAWN screening on Wednesday March 5th, with Fred Williamson in attendance.

“There is a brief moment in the pivotal scene where Tommy makes his power play to take over Harlem. As he stealthily approaches the room where the bosses are meeting, he pauses ever-so briefly in front of the Cardoza family’s coat-of-arms, with it’s crossed swords framing his body. I love the symbolism here… Tommy is essentially replacing the coat-of-arms with his own personal symbol – his weapon of choice, clenched in his hand. Not something so archaic as a sword, as was representative of the previous dynasty, but a weapon more indicative of the new boss in town:
Tommy Gibbs. Black Caesar.” - BP

Release and Purchase Information:
Black Caesar by Billy Perkins, 18”x32” limited edition screen print edition of 75, signed and numbered by the artist, and selling for $75/each. In addition, all prints will be signed by Black Caesar himself,
FRED WILLIAMSON!

There will be two chances to obtain Black Caesar by Billy Perkins. The prints will be for sale at the Austin Film Society screening of From Dusk Til Dawn, with Fred Williamson in attendance, on Wednesday March 5th, 2014, with proceeds going to benefit The Austin Film Society. If you have not gotten tickets to this not-to-be-missed event, get them now! CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS. We will be holding a small number of prints back to ensure that our fans get a chance to purchase. All remaining prints will be sold online at the Odd City Entertainment store on Thursday March 6th. As per usual, they will go on sale at a random time during the day.

Cheech & Chong Poster by Billy Perkins Free Friday Poster Giveaway

44 comments:

Cheech & Chong are icons in this country and around the world for many reasons. Comedy, film, music and the fight to legalize marijuana are just some of the many things they have been involved in through their long careers. My favorite still is Santa Claus and his Old Lady, that song still makes me laugh after hearing it more times than I can count.

Austin artist Billy Perkins has made 4 posters for them and their tours over the years. The one I am giving away today is from 2012. I'll be honest, the colors on the poster are much brighter in person then this digital image, I was just to tired to take pics of the poster. Why am I tired ? Story for another day.

Now go to the top of the post above the picture and click on comments or scroll down (depends on how you see this post) to leave a comment about your favorite Cheech and Chong Movie or song or whatever you want about them to have a chance at winning the poster. Don't worry if your comment does not appear immediately I have to approve them before they are published. I will use the random number generator to pick a winner. Entries are limited to ONE PER PERSON PER HOUSEHOLD. Please leave your name with the comment, comments without names will not be accepted. Entries will be accepted until Midnight PDT Saturday July 13 that's almost two days to enter with the winner announced on Sunday.

Thank you to Billy Perkins for the poster.

Billy Perkins bringing the Bacon to Flatstock

No comments:

I tried working the words to that old commercial, bring home the bacon fry up in a pan, into the title but it just would not go.

It's spring once more in Austin, Texas and that means it's time for SXSW and the annual FLATSTOCK Poster Show. Over 100 rock poster artists are in town showing and selling their prints at the Austin Convention Center. If you've never been to a Flatstock show, it's a pretty awe-inspiring collection of work.

FLATSTOCK 33 is Wed, March 14 from 2-6pm, and Thurs - Sat, March 17 from 11am-6pm. Come see me, it's totally FREE TO THE PUBLIC. No wristband is required to attend Flatstock!

Billy Perkins Flatstock 33 "bacon" print will be printed onsite during Flatstock by master printer Andy MacDougall and Coronado Studio's Jonathan Rebolloso, as part of the screen printing demonstrations. Demos will be happening all during Flatstock, with prints available for purchase as soon as the ink dries. Pick up one of his tasty Bacon posters, there's real bacon grease in the ink!

He'll have a lot of new work at this year's show, including limited edition concert posters, movie prints and art prints. He is also debuting a new series of 10x12 silkscreened "mini-prints". They fit well on your already-crowded walls, and they're cheap!

He'll also have at his booth some brand new prints in his Perkins '77 art print series, and his last copies of some fan favorites that will surely be sold out by the end of Flatstock.

He is still working on a website, until then rub his head and bother him on Facebook HERE

Fresh news from the back of the bus - New BILLY PERKINS '77 prints available NOW!

No comments:

BILLY PERKINS '77

* 77 Iconic Music Portraits from 1977
* Very Limited Edition of only 77 signed & numbered serigraphs of each image

Elo kiddies!

It's been a while, so here's an update on what's happening with the series:

* Only 12 prints into the series of 77, and already some very fun things are coming to fruition from these. There's a very good chance that you'll see some of these reproduced at 8ft tall in the windows of select Macy's & Nordstrom's across the country this spring & summer.

* Look for gallery shows all over the US when the series is complete, including a 3-month showing at the former location of CBGB.

* A book deal is also being sought after & discussed. Because of these, & other cool ideas that are springing from the series, Billy is going to switch gears & get all of the art done for the series, even if it's months ahead of the print schedule. The Perkins 77 series is an ambitious effort, but one that will see its way to completion hopefully by the end of 2011. Most of the individual prints will be sold out long before the last one is printed.

* A word about RED BLUFF STUDIOS:
Billy is proud that this series is literally a 3-man operation between himself and his all-important print team: Satch Grimley & Jamie Cervantes of Austin's Red Bluff Studios. It's important to note that NOTHING is automated - every one of these beautiful serigraphs are expertly screened by hand. Anyone who knows the variables & limitations of serigraphy knows that it takes skill & craftsmanship to not only mix the custom ink colors, but to print overlaying colors and hand-pull large areas of flat color with such smooth consistency. These elements are essential to the character of the series, so thanks to the skill and experience of my partners, Billy is in very good hands. Satch is as good at mixing colors as anyone he's ever seen. Both are expert printers & trained by some of the best, including Austin's legendary Coronado Studio. Jaime's sharp eye has saved at least a couple of prints from mistakes that were made on my end. Billy's relationship with both Jaime and Satch add up to almost 30 years, & Billy is very proud that they are on board to see this funky vision through to the end.

Now, on to new stuff! A link to purchase prints is near the bottom of this post.

Announcing "77"! New art print series from Billy Perkins

3 comments:

From Billy Perkins:

In 1977, I was an impressionable young teenager who was very much into music. In the KISS Army at age 12 & 13, I had wall-sized posters covering my entire room...including the doors and ceiling.

It was an awesome time for music. Album-oriented rock ruled the airwaves, not to mention the stadiums. The punk movement was in full swing in the USA, the UK and Europe. Somehow it trickled down to smalltown central Texas and made its way into my ears, onto my turntable and into my brain...where it would stay to this day. Punk may have been mainstream rock's mortal enemy, but in my head, Dee Dee Ramone and Ace Frehley lived together in perfect harmony. They still do.

For literally 20 years or more I've been talking about doing this concept series, so much so that some of my friends would chuckle at the mention of it. They, like myself, were skeptical that it would ever happen. I never started on it because I draw in many different styles, and could never decide how to best render these images. Now it's very clear, and the wheels are finally in motion!

Until recent movie poster work with Alamo Drafthouse and a few other clients, I never really did portraiture. Through the aforementioned work though, a style began to develop - one that involves a conscious effort to get better at utilizing negative space and resist my natural inclination to fill up the page. The popularity of those images, along with the fun that I had rendering them, brought me back to my old concept...the one that had been simmering in my head for 20+ years. The style fit perfectly.

The idea is this:
* A series of serigraph art prints - portraits of music icons from around (but not solely from) 1977. This is a very autobiographical series - these are rock icons that I used to draw on my notebooks -figures that enhanced my love of music and inspired me as an artist.
* The series will consist of 77 different images, each available individually. Complete sets are also be available for pre-order (see below).
* Each print will be 18x24, screen printed by hand on Cougar Natural 100# paper.
* Each image will be signed & numbered, each part of an extremely limited edition of only 77 prints (plus a few artist proofs).
* Each print will be stamped on the back with the official Perkins 77 logo, and numbered as to its place in the series. (Example: Johnny Rotten is print 77.01, Robert Plant 77.02, etc.).
** Only 40 individual prints of each image will be sold, so get them NOW! The rest will be saved for complete sets.
* The complete sets will feature prints that are all the same number in the edition. There will also be a special package designed for these.* Only 11 sets will be sold at the presale price.

They'll be printed in order until all 77 editions are done. New images will be announced as they are completed. The goal in the end is to try to turn this series into a book, as well as a few gallery shows. By then, all of the individual prints will most likely have been sold, so GET THEM EARLY!

This is obviously a very ambitious effort, one that surpasses anything I've tried to date. But...I'm very proud & excited to announce that the first 4 images are complete and available for preorder purchase NOW! Printing will start within a week.
