Alan Campbell has a cool looking new print going on sale Monday, Kafka On The Shore.
I asked Alan about the design:
the layout was inspired by Japanese torii gates that mark the entrances to shrines, and bounces off the packaging of vinyl records, like a split record sleeve with the red vinyl behind the crow acting as a visual of the Japanese flag, a finger print, a birds nest and a vinyl record.( trying to highlight the music, identity and the searching for home themes that run through the novel ) the prominence of the crow is too link back to the boy named crow in the story who watches over the Kafka character standing over the hill from when Nakata collapsed as a child, my intentions were to highlight the interactions between the two stories.Regular edition
I spent along time sketching this out starting in about mid December and i kept bring in more and more ideas and elements, it got way to packed and i striped it all back, One of the first prints I've fully planed out using digital means before drawing it up by hand, at the full 18" X 24" on sheets of drawing film, I then screen printed it myself at the Glasgow print studio
The variant is called the worship and tribute edition because i was listening to a ton of glassjaw while working on it -Alan
